Claimed by the Mad Lycan King
Chapter 218: THERE ARE A LOT OF PEOPLE
Seara felt various emotions when she heard what Jeremy said. Zade contacted them, but Jeremy explained the signal was bad here after the attack; that was why it was difficult to reach them.
The Quantum Protocol had done something to isolate them, as they messed with their signal. Asher was the only line that could be reached, but even so, that connection didn’t last for long before they lost the communication again.
"Jeremy, come here."
Leia stood up; she sounded eerily calm, and when she moved, she looked like herself again. There was no trace of the woman who had a breakdown just a few minutes earlier.
Seara stood up as well, and she watched Jeremy grimace and mutter under his breath something along the lines of, ’I am in big trouble.’
And he was right, because the moment they were outside and the door to the nursery room was closed so the baby wouldn’t hear the noise, Leia lashed out at her son.
"How could you forget about something that important?" Leia’s face was red as she vented all of her frustration, and Seara watched as Jeremy lowered his head timidly while trying to calm his mother down.
"Mom, Mom, not in front of other people... This is embarrassing... Don’t scold me in front of other people."
He was more worried about his image than his mother’s rage. And somehow, he looked like a little boy who was caught red-handed doing something bad.
Richie was there, but Susan and Lidya were nowhere to be found. Lidya was probably crashing out in one of the rooms, sleeping after a long night with the children.
"Oh, I am worried sick! Do you have any idea what I have to go through? How could you let something like this be forgotten?"
Jeremy could only utter a sincere apology and genuinely asked his mother to scold him somewhere secluded.
To his credit, Jeremy didn’t ask Leia to stop reprimanding him, but he preferred to be scolded where there was not a single soul who could hear that.
However, to his utter embarrassment, Leia hugged him tightly at the end of her rant. "Oh, Jeremy. I feel like I want to fold you into a tiny piece and put an alarm in your head, so you will never forget anything anymore."
"Mom, don’t hug me in public; I am big already." Jeremy glanced at Seara and Richie, who were there. They didn’t even try to hide the fact they were watching him.
"I don’t care; you are still my baby." Leia then grabbed Seara and hugged her again. They were her babies, and she squeezed the two of them.
And unlike Jeremy, Seara actually liked being hugged like this. Leia’s scent was comforting, and she was happy for the first time after a few depressing days, though she was also upset with Jeremy for forgetting to tell them about the information.
Only then could Seara finally rest. She slept until it was night and no one bothered her, since there was nothing for her to do.
The dead had been buried, and the injured had been healed, while the children were still confused about why they couldn’t meet with their parents.
Rose was with her brother and looked calmer as she nestled against his chest, as they were the only two left of their little family.
At night, Seara decided to go to Asher. He moved into an apartment building with tight security because the pack house had been completely destroyed.
The heavy machine had arrived to help with the cleanup after the attack.
"You can leave," Asher said to Rexton when Seara entered the room that had been used as the king’s study.
Rexton glanced at Seara, but she pretended that she didn’t see him as she approached Asher, who was sitting behind his table.
He slouched down, staring at the ceiling, and lowered his guard down. He could abandon his facade of being the dignified king who knew what to do, as Seara could see that this role did not suit him.
"I heard Zade contacted you after the attack. Do you know how to contact him?" Seara sat down in front of Asher.
"Leia came this morning and asked the same question. The answer is still the same. I don’t know. We are still working on the signal. What’s more, we are afraid they will sabotage our line, so we can’t have that form of communication until we have a clear line."
They talked about it some more, and Seara finally asked how the progress was going. "Do you think we can survive this?"
Asher rubbed his face roughly and groaned when he heard the question.
"To be honest, I don’t even know what I am doing." He looked tired. "It feels like I have to work out for sixteen hours straight every day." He then added. "I don’t even have the energy to get out of my bed most of the day."
Seara grimaced. "That sounds like a depression."
This time, Asher laughed. "Yes, I am depressed because I have lived for so long; I have been having an existential crisis since a hundred years ago."
There was a half-truth in the joke, but Seara didn’t press further. Because all of a sudden, Asher straightened his back, and his eyes glistened as he was communicating through mindlink.
The look on Asher’s face told her that it was not something good.
And she was right because after he ended the mindlink, Asher stood up and ushered Seara up as well to go with him.
"We need to move."
"Why?"
"Quantum Protocol has managed to take down four packs—they are our defense. They are now only a few packs away from reaching this city. We need to fall back."
Seara was horrified when she heard that. "But there are a lot of people!"
"That’s why we have to move quickly."
"How much time do we have?"
"Two or three hours if we are lucky enough."
