[FROLO]

The Blackwaters were not giving up anytime soon.

They knew they were treading very dangerous waters, especially with Sergei, but they had instructions that had been given long before they even knew what their lives were supposed to be.

Long before they had understood the very foundation of their organization.

It was supposed to keep them sane.

Safe.

But things were slowly changing.

Their obsessions were slowly becoming the one thing that was bound to ruin them and make so many lives worse for them.

They knew Sergei was ruthlessly hunting people.

Knew about the dead officials.

About the people who Sergei himself had deemed unworthy to keep living anymore. But that wasn’t enough to get them to stay away.

Because for the Blackwaters, the B.U.R.A.N project key was inside the man’s head, and if they had to ally with Aleksandr for it, then they would do it. After all, they trusted Alek to match Sergei’s energy.

Aleksandr was a powerful alpha.

They had seen him in action more than once, and he was the best choice for this. Then again, they had to remind themselves that the stakes were a little higher because Alek could turn on them too, and there wasn’t much they could do.

Not to mention the fact that it would be a bit harder to collect allies and gather a new team for the task.

So they had to be very careful with it all.

"The government contract with Senator Aleksandr is still active," Latif said as they went through every possible report that they had gathered over the years.

They were going directly after Sergei, and what better place to start than the history the man had made for himself over the years, right? Besides, it couldn’t be that bad, no?

"President Boris?" Taylor asked like she didn’t hear the man.

Of course there had been an alliance before.

It had even been made public.

But there had been whispers about the alliance being shaky and the government having a fallout with the senator.

Of course, the larger Frolo was aware of that.

But the people who knew understood that it was not the kind of shit that happened with ease. Something had to have gone fundamentally wrong somewhere. It didn’t even make it any better because at the end of the day they needed each other.

The relationships they had forged over the years for the war against Sergei were not to be tampered with.

But what were the odds that these relationships would stick and stay steady through and through?

"Yes. Zhenya is on that task force. I don’t understand why they keep pulling each other in and out, but it’s a boring cycle if you ask me. The easiest thing we could do is go after Sergei directly.

"It will save us time and resources instead of all these games. We all saw what happened yesterday. That man is a monster. One that I wouldn’t mind losing my life to," Latif said dreamily.

Taylor couldn’t help but roll her eyes at the man.

Even in the middle of a war, Latif was still in awe of the one man who had ruined so many lives. But could he ever be blamed for it? He had seen everything Sergei did and still wanted to meet the man in person.

Whether on the battlefield or on the streets.

There was no distinction anymore.

"Why did Zhenya come after Tyler?" Taylor asked, running a program on her tablet to scan the possible targets they had that Sergei could hit first.

She had almost died because of that, and while she had not exactly understood why, she hadn’t even had the chance to talk to her brother.

There was clearly more to the situation than Tyler was letting her know, and frankly she needed to figure it out fast. Her brother was not meant to be a liability. Not at this phase of their plans.

It would change a lot of things.

"No clue. I tried asking him but got nothing. Checked the footage from yesterday and there wasn’t much between them. Just casual conversations that made no sense.

"Maybe you could ask him yourself, and use the hurt sister card," Latif said calmly.

He knew there was more there.

He understood so well, but they were too busy with the plans against Sergei to even start thinking of seeing Zhenya as their enemy.

"Whatever he did must have agitated Zhenya to come be our house guest," Taylor said, and to that Latif nodded.

Even they knew.

And the fact that Zhenya hadn’t said shit about their operations or even the fact that they had been following Sergei told them a lot, or enough if the man had spoken.

Zhenya didn’t care.

Not for what they did and how they did it; that much they were certain of.

Yesterday was probably just something Tyler had done, because that was also why Zhenya had come seeking.

"I’ve been meaning to ask something, ma’am," Latif began, and Taylor let out a groan.

"I told you not to call me ma’am when we are here, Latif. Makes me feel old,’ Taylor grumbled, and Latif just smiled understandingly.

"What will we do after extracting the information from Sergei’s head? Will we kill him? Or just let him be?" Latif asked in earnest.

There were levels to what they were doing, and any sane person knew that Frolo was already burning over a simple omega. There was no telling what would happen after they were done with Sergei.

Or maybe they knew it so well and just didn’t want to take their time to spell it out because it would just translate to other things neither of them was willing to embrace at this point in time.

"Killing Sergei will burn Frolo... but we can manipulate him to do our bidding. Of course, if he doesn’t kill us first," Taylor said casually, like the idea of Sergei going after them wasn’t as scary as it was bound to be.

This was not some assignment they were rushing to fail at. This was her most dangerous task they had ahead, and the way they were chatting about it was unsettling.

Even if they had already gotten used to it.

"Are you having second thoughts, Latif?" Taylor asked, and Latif let out a laugh.

"Me? Change my mind? Please... It’s just... I have been thinking a lot about it. The kind of infrastructure Sergei has is insane. Not to mention the fact that his adoptive parents are top-tier insane.

"If we get to Sergei, we have to do it right, but also, we have to think of the repercussions. We both know the Moskowsky camp considers death a mercy," Latif said, reminding Taylor of what the actual stakes were.

This was not going to be a walk in the park because there was literally an entire underworld ready to pick up arms at a whisper from Sergei himself.

"We will cross that bridge when we get there. Meanwhile, you need to go say hello to Aleksandr and see where his plans are heading. We don’t have a lot of time," Taylor said.

"What of Rahim?" Latif asked, and Taylor snorted.

"The sniper?"

"Yeah. That one," Latif said.

"The Moskowsky camp will kill you if you go after any of them. We are not trying to accumulate more enemies. Leave the psychos alone and focus on Sergei.

"He is the only target that matters," Taylor said, the warning in her tone obvious, as if she knew something that no one knew yet.

But did she, or was it just another failed assumption?
