Chapter 627: Chapter 624: Confusing Oneself

She wasn’t sure where Roger was headed. What if it was their main base, a place they’d been operating for a long time? She recalled the bits of information she’d gathered—word was that they had quite a few Red Rank Powerhouses on their side.

Under these circumstances, if they had more Red Rank Powerhouses than her group did, recklessly tailing them and giving away their position would be incredibly dangerous.

So, the best course of action was to wait and see. There was no need to pursue them and risk a direct confrontation.

’She has these tools that are far beyond this era; there’s no reason to let her Beast Husbands risk their lives.’

’Points can be earned again, but she couldn’t bear to lose a single one of the precious people by her side.’

The sky grew darker, and the light in the forest faded rapidly.

Since they didn’t need to track them up close, Chou Rong immediately made the most prudent arrangements.

He signaled for Yin Ze and Jin Yi to take good care of Bai Wanwan, then turned to direct the other males.

One party was sent to search the vicinity for a natural cave to serve as their camp for the night, while another team of experienced hunters was dispatched to hunt and replenish their energy for the evening.

By the time night had fallen completely, their group had settled into a spacious, dry cave.

The cave entrance was small, but the interior opened up into a surprisingly vast space, large enough to accommodate all of them.

"Wanwan, come and get some rest."

In the deepest part of the cave, Jin Yi had already skillfully laid out a comfortable, soft bed of animal hides for Bai Wanwan, making sure she would have a good rest.

"Okay." She walked over slowly, still holding the display, her eyes glued to the screen.

The other Orange Rank males silently took up positions to rest and keep watch near the cave entrance, allowing them to both guard the interior and respond immediately to any sudden incidents.

Yin Ze was by the campfire, focused on roasting meat for Bai Wanwan, the dancing flames illuminating his handsome profile.

Meanwhile, Bai Wanwan sat in the deepest part of the cave. A protruding rock wall perfectly concealed her, minimizing any light that might escape from her screen while also providing her with a relatively private and secure space.

When Yin Ze brought the roasted meat over, he saw that the display was completely dark.

"Wanwan, you can’t see anything. Can you still control it?"

"I can. I’ll switch on night mode in a bit."

In that short time, the sky had turned completely black. The dense canopy of the forest blocked out what little moonlight there was.

As a result, the screen—which had previously shown blurry shapes in the faint twilight—was now nothing but pitch black.

She could only tell from the sounds that the Beastmen were still on the move.

After some time, new sounds finally came from their end.

The monotonous sound of footsteps and rustling leaves gave way to a jumble of new noises: faint voices, more footsteps, and even the subtle clatter of metal or stone tools.

Bai Wanwan immediately perked up, all traces of fatigue gone.

She immediately activated the night-vision mode on the interface and, at the same time, maneuvered the bug out from the Beastman male’s waistband.

The image wasn’t as clear as it was during the day, but it was no longer a hindrance to movement or observation.

Only then did she see it: a massive natural cavern!

Jagged, strange rock formations littered the cave, with countless stalactites hanging from the ceiling. The walls were damp and slick, reflecting a faint, mysterious light.

Throngs of Beastmen were resting along both sides of the cavern, far more than she had anticipated.

When they saw Roger enter, the Beastmen all bowed their heads or greeted him with a salute.

Bai Wanwan quickly realized that their demeanor was completely different from the mindless, stiff-moving puppets she’d seen before. These Beastmen had focus in their eyes—a look of reverence or obedience. Like Roger, they were fully conscious!

’This has to be a core base of operations.’

Then, she heard Roger order the few Beastmen who had followed him in, "Go and take care of the tasks I gave you. You don’t need to follow me."

’Not good!’

Bai Wanwan’s heart clenched.

’Is Roger going off on his own?’

’Only by following Roger can I get to the core information and learn their true goals and plans.’

But Roger said his piece and headed straight for the depths of the cavern, his figure about to vanish into the labyrinthine tunnels.

Bai Wanwan hurriedly maneuvered the small bug, making it crawl completely free of the waistband and hop to the ground in an attempt to follow Roger.

The next second, a large foot in an animal-hide boot came down with a THUD, landing right beside it!

The impact kicked up enough dust to nearly obscure the camera lens.

If she hadn’t stopped it in time, leaving the bug frozen in place, the little device—worth a whopping ten thousand Points and so difficult to sneak in—would have been crushed flat!

Breaking out in a cold sweat, Bai Wanwan quickly swiveled the camera’s view, scanning the immediate area.

She spotted a relatively empty area ahead, near a rock wall with few Beastmen around.

She quickly maneuvered the little bug, making it skim close to the ground as it darted toward the wall. Then, hugging the dark corner, it shot off like a black shadow in the direction Roger had gone.

But the bug was tiny. To make it more concealable, it wasn’t equipped with any other overpowered abilities.

By the time she had anxiously maneuvered it some distance along the wall, Roger’s figure had long since vanished into the cavern.

’It’s fine. I’ve made it this far. Worst case, I’ll just have to spend some time searching for him.’

Steeling herself, she guided the little bug through the dim, winding tunnels. The complex paths were like a maze, and the constantly shaking and turning image on the screen nearly made her dizzy.

The cavern was full of forks. Some passages were narrow, while others led to dead ends. Finding any trace of Roger was no easy task.

Even with her "cheat" device, operating it in the field presented all sorts of unforeseen problems. Occasional signal fluctuations and the limited perspective made judgment difficult, testing both her patience and her skill.

Bai Wanwan steadied her nerves, took a deep breath, and pressed on.

"Wanwan, I’ve been watching. Don’t go that way; you were just there," Jin Yi called out, stopping her.

"Was I?" Bai Wanwan gave an awkward smile. She didn’t normally have a poor sense of direction, but this environment was exceptionally disorienting.

"Mhm, try going that way." Jin Yi tapped a spot on the screen.

"Okay."

Finally, with the two males guiding her, she stopped going in circles.

After arranging the sentries at the cave entrance, Chou Rong walked back over and saw her still operating the reconnaissance device.

"Wanwan, it’s getting late. Go get some rest. Yin Ze, Jin Yi, you’ve been watching for a while. Can you operate it?"

He couldn’t take over himself. Before they left, he had promised Zhu Xiu that he wouldn’t let any harm come to Wanwan.

As the group’s leader, he had to remain in peak condition at all times to manage the overall situation, personally watch over Wanwan’s safety, and respond to any sudden threats. That was his most important duty.

Hearing this, Jin Yi nodded. "I’ve been watching. I think I have the hang of it."

He was meticulous and observant, so he understood Chou Rong’s reasoning. He felt for Wanwan too and didn’t want her to exhaust herself.
