Chapter 149: You Shouldn’t Have Done That.
As for what he had told her, it was nothing more than giving her and the others permission to devour the corpses remaining from his battle, something that would allow them to grow stronger without requiring him to spend any resources on their development.
However, Osborne was a bit doubtful about such an idea because he knew that demons grew stronger the more they ate, especially Werewolves, who were known to rapidly increase in strength by devouring humans, and although the corpses he had left behind were not enough to cause an enormous change overnight, repeatedly allowing them to feed would eventually produce noticeable results.
By letting them grow stronger, it meant that in the near future, he would have to continue calling for their aid whenever he found himself in a difficult situation, which meant that he was gradually becoming more dependent on the very creatures he had once intended to separate himself from.
He had originally planned to find a cure for his demonization, or at the very least discover a way to suppress it before the changes in his body became irreversible, yet his recent actions seemed to suggest that he was slowly growing comfortable with the power he had gained, even going as far as helping the demons under his command become stronger.
’Do I really want to do away with this power?’ Osborne thought to himself, unable to give himself a clear answer despite having considered the question several times since leaving the Roosevelt household.
After all, his abilities had proven unimaginably useful ever since he left the Roosevelts, and if not for them, he wasn’t sure he would’ve survived this long, especially with how dangerous the world had become once he was no longer protected by the influence of a powerful noble household.
His enhanced senses had saved him from danger on several occasions, his demonic strength had allowed him to defeat enemies who would otherwise have been beyond his reach, and the women he had brought under his control had provided him with useful assistance whenever he needed it, making it difficult for him to imagine returning to the life he had lived before gaining these abilities.
Of course, he was not foolish enough to believe that such power came without a price, because he had already experienced enough changes to his body and instincts to understand that the longer he continued down this path, the harder it might become to return to being human, and he had no intention of discovering what would happen if his demonic nature eventually gained complete control over him.
Yet, even with that fear in mind, he couldn’t bring himself to regret the decisions he had made so far, since he was still alive, free from the Roosevelts, and finally able to make his own choices without needing to answer to someone who held power over him.
Perhaps that was the real problem, because for someone who had spent so much time worrying about the dangers of demonization, he had rarely stopped to consider whether he truly wanted to give up everything it had given him in exchange for returning to an ordinary life.
"Is something the matter?" Sasha, who was walking beside him, couldn’t help but notice his deep expression.
Only after hearing her voice did Osborne realise he’d been standing in place for far too long.
He shook his head, then let out a breath. "It’s nothing..." He said before stepping into the shelter.
Sasha stood there for a moment, watching his back as he walked away, unable to help feeling a little disappointed since this was already the second time he’d shrugged her off like that, leaving her with even more questions about the man who had saved her life.
’He’s definitely hiding something from me,’ she thought, narrowing her eyes slightly as she tried to understand what could possibly trouble someone as powerful as him.
But how could she bear to pry?
’If he doesn’t want to say, it’s not my place to make him. I should be glad he even bothered coming to help me in the first place.’
Sasha pitifully stared at herself, unconsciously rubbing her arm as she remembered how helpless she’d been when those traffickers had captured her, leaving her with no choice but to wait for someone to save her, even though she had almost given up hope of ever escaping that place alive.
Although she had been rescued, she still knew almost nothing about the person responsible, and the more she thought about it, the more she realised just how strange their meeting had been.
’He doesn’t look like he was sent by Father.’
’If he were, he would’ve known who I was from a glance, especially since Father has been sending letters and allowances for as long as I can remember, meaning he should have been able to recognise me if he’d been sent to bring me home.’
’Meaning he simply found me by chance,’ she thought, completely unaware that Osborne had actually taken a missing-person mission from the Adventurers’ Guild, since the idea of him going through all that trouble to save a complete stranger seemed too unreasonable to consider.
After all, what type of high-level adventurer would risk his life just to save the life of one random girl, especially when there was no guarantee that she would be able to offer him anything in return?
Sasha let out a helpless breath before stepping into the shelter, deciding that she would simply have to wait until she had a better understanding of the man who had saved her, rather than spend the entire night worrying about things she couldn’t change.
Inside, she saw several wooden bunk beds lining the place, with a few old blankets scattered across them, although the entire shelter was far from comfortable enough to serve as a proper resting place for anyone who was used to sleeping in a decent bed.
As for Osborne, he had already laid down on one at the far end of the wooden shelter, his arm resting beside him while his entire body remained covered by the dark armour that had concealed his appearance ever since Sasha first encountered him.
