Chapter 91: Father!!!
He had no intention of spending the rest of his life hiding in the countryside.
Eventually, he would need to move.
He would need to learn more about the kingdom.
He would need to understand the demons, the cursed dagger, his strange transformation, and the secrets surrounding the power he had inherited.
And to do that, he needed somewhere with lots of information.
Osborne’s eyes narrowed.
If he remembered correctly, some of the greatest collections of knowledge in the kingdom were controlled by powerful noble families and religious institutions.
If he wanted to understand the cursed dagger and the changes happening to his body, he needed access to those records.
He couldn’t simply walk into one of those places and start reading.
But if he built enough connections, perhaps he could eventually gain access.
’An adventurer might actually be the best starting point.’ He leaned back against the wall.
A faint smile appeared on his face.
’First, I need money.’
’Then information.’
’After that, connections.’
’And eventually, I’ll find a way to get into one of those libraries.’
Osborne looked toward the window.
The sunlight outside was beginning to fade.
He could hear Vivian and Abigail moving around in the house, along with Nicholas’s voice occasionally reaching him from outside.
It was strangely peaceful.
---
A knock suddenly came from the door.
Osborne, who had been sitting quietly on the bed while thinking about his current situation, slowly raised his head.
He remained silent for a moment before getting up from the bed and walking toward the door, his armored footsteps making a faint sound against the wooden floor.
When he opened it, he found Vivian standing outside.
The moment the door opened, Vivian’s eyes instinctively moved upward.
She had seen him earlier when he arrived with her father, but she hadn’t really paid much attention to his height because of the distance between them.
Now that she was standing directly in front of him, however, she couldn’t help but realize just how tall he actually was.
He was practically a head taller than her.
For some reason, Vivian remained staring for a little too long.
Osborne tilted his helm slightly.
Only then did Vivian immediately snap out of her thoughts.
"Ah..." She awkwardly cleared her throat. "Are you hungry?"
Osborne remained silent.
"My father wanted me to ask if you’d like to join us for dinner." She said.
Osborne paused as if thinking it over before nodding.
"Alright then." Vivian stepped aside, allowing him to leave the room.
He walked past her before turning around and closing the door behind himself.
Vivian watched him for a moment before quickly turning around and leading the way.
As they walked through the house, Vivian became increasingly aware of the footsteps behind her.
For some reason, having him follow directly behind her made her feel strangely nervous.
She couldn’t explain why.
Perhaps it was because he was a complete stranger who had suddenly appeared in their home wearing a full suit of armor and carrying a sword.
Or perhaps it was because he barely spoke.
Either way, Vivian found herself glancing behind her several times.
Each time, Osborne was simply walking behind her without saying anything.
’He’s really quiet...’ She thought before quickly turning her attention forward again.
Eventually, they arrived at the dining room.
Nicholas immediately looked toward the entrance.
"There you are." He smiled when he saw Osborne.
"I hope I wasn’t bothering you by asking Vivian to bring you here."
Osborne shook his head.
Nicholas visibly relaxed.
"That’s good to hear."
Vivian took her seat at the table while Osborne sat down as well.
Abigail was already there, placing the final dishes onto the table.
The meal itself was rather simple.
There was a large pot of vegetable stew with several pieces of meat mixed inside, along with some bread and a few other small dishes.
Osborne looked at the food for a moment before picking up his spoon.
He took a sip of the stew.
’It’s pretty good.’
He hadn’t expected much from a simple farmer’s household, but the food was actually better than he had expected.
Abigail noticed his reaction.
"What do you think?" She asked.
Osborne looked toward her then nodded.
"It’s good." He said.
The words came out quietly, but Abigail’s face immediately brightened.
"I’m glad you like it."
Osborne continued eating.
However, he soon noticed something.
His plate contained noticeably more meat than everyone else’s.
He glanced at Nicholas.
The old man was pretending not to notice.
He then looked toward Abigail.
She was doing the exact same thing.
Vivian was also eating quietly, although Osborne noticed that she occasionally glanced toward his plate.
Osborne understood immediately.
’They’re giving me more because I’m a guest.’ He couldn’t help finding it a bit funny. Once again, they were shattering his world view the Roosevelts had previously shaped.
He didn’t say anything about it.
There was no reason to embarrass them after they had gone out of their way to make him comfortable.
The family soon began talking amongst themselves.
Nicholas spoke about the work he needed to do on the farm, Abigail occasionally mentioned things that needed to be repaired around the house, while Vivian talked about some of the things she had done earlier that day.
Osborne listened quietly while eating.
He didn’t have much to add.
After all, he had only just met these people.
Eventually, however, Nicholas turned his attention toward him.
"So, Sir Dokebai..." Osborne stopped eating.
Shifting his focus to the man.
"What do you plan to do from here?" Nicholas asked.
Osborne remained silent for a moment.
He slowly placed his spoon down.
Then his hand moved toward the sword resting beside him.
He then grabbed it.
Vivian’s expression changed immediately.
She stared at him as he slowly lifted the sword upward.
’What is he doing?!’
Nicholas, however, looked more intrigued than worried.
Osborne raised the sword slightly, allowing the light from the nearby lamp to reflect against its blade.
He then pointed toward it.
Nicholas understood.
"Ah..." He nodded slowly.
