"So you’re looking for work where you can make use of your sword?"
Osborne nodded.
Vivian stared at him.
’He’s a mercenary?’
She had apparently misunderstood what he was doing.
Nicholas suddenly laughed.
"I see." He shook his head with amusement.
"A knight truly is a knight."
Osborne tilted his helm slightly.
Nicholas continued eating.
"There’s no shortage of work for people who know how to use a sword around here, although I don’t know how much work you’ll find in a place like this."
Osborne simply nodded.
Vivian remained silent.
Nicholas noticed her strange expression.
"Vivian, are you alright?"
Vivian immediately looked toward him.
"Ah? Yes, I’m fine."
"You’ve been staring at Sir Dokebai for a while. Are you sure there’s nothing wrong?"
Vivian’s face became slightly red.
"I wasn’t staring!"
Nicholas chuckled.
"I didn’t say you were doing anything wrong."
Vivian lowered her head and continued eating.
Osborne remained completely unaware of whatever was going through her mind.
After the meal was finished, everyone eventually began preparing for bed.
However, before Osborne could return to his room, Nicholas stopped Vivian.
"Vivian, make sure you show Sir Dokebai around properly."
’But why me?! Can’t someone else do it?’ She was already having trouble being close to him. Now she had to do it again?
Vivian sighed.
"Alright."
She turned toward Osborne.
"Come on, I’ll show you around."
Osborne followed.
Vivian showed him the different rooms inside the house, the kitchen, the storage area, and eventually the small area outside where they kept several tools used for farming.
She even showed him the bath and restroom.
She explained everything while Osborne listened quietly.
There wasn’t much to the house, but it was enough for them.
Eventually, Vivian brought him back toward his room.
"Well, that’s everything." Osborne nodded.
"Goodnight." Osborne said.
Vivian felt a bit strange hearing that rare voice of his.
"Goodnight, Sir Dokebai." Vivian gave him an awkward smile.
Osborne entered the room and closed the door behind himself.
Vivian stood there for several seconds.
She eventually let out a relieved breath.
’He’s really strange.’
She said, then turned around and walked away.
The following morning arrived quietly.
Unfortunately, Vivian didn’t.
At least, not immediately.
She was still lying across her bed with her messy green hair covering half of her face, one arm hanging over the side while one of her legs was almost completely outside the blanket.
A small amount of drool could even be seen at the corner of her mouth.
Knock.
Knock.
Vivian groaned.
"Ugh..."
Another knock came from the door.
"I’m coming..."
She slowly forced herself out of bed and dragged her feet toward the door.
When she opened it, she found Abigail standing outside.
Vivian rubbed her eyes.
"Mom?"
Abigail looked at her daughter’s appearance.
Her expression immediately became tired.
"Have you seen Sir Dokebai?"
Vivian blinked.
"Sir Dokebai?"
"Yes." Her mother said.
"No, I haven’t." Vivian replied.
Her eyes suddenly became slightly more alert.
"Is something wrong?"
"No." Her mother let out a breath.
"Your father was looking for him this morning. He wanted him to join us for breakfast. But when I went to call him, I noticed he wasn’t in his room, so I came to ask you."
Vivian yawned.
"Maybe he’s already outside." She said, then stretched her arms.
"Don’t worry about it. I’ll go check."
"Alright." Abigail nodded.
As she began walking away, however, she suddenly stopped.
"Vivian." Her mother said.
"Yes?"
"Make sure you dress up properly before heading outside."
Vivian looked down at herself.
She was still wearing the loose clothes she had slept in, her hair was completely messy, and she probably looked like she had just survived a battle.
"What’s wrong with the way I look?"
Abigail sighed.
"Nothing." She shook her head.
"Just don’t forget."
Vivian frowned.
"But—" She wanted to speak, but Abigail had already walked away.
Vivian stood there for several seconds.
"...Fine." She eventually returned to her room.
After combing her hair and changing into a cleaner set of clothes, Vivian finally stepped outside.
She was expecting to see Osborne somewhere near the house.
Thinking to herself that he had gone for a walk or was perhaps enjoying the morning air.
Instead, the moment she stepped outside, Vivian froze.
"What in the world..." Her eyes widened.
The farmland in front of the house looked completely different from the one she’d seen yesterday.
The land that had been rough and uneven when Osborne arrived was now completely cleared.
The soil had been turned over properly, large stones had been removed, and the entire field looked ready for planting.
Vivian stared at it in disbelief.
She slowly walked forward.
Vivian’s mouth slowly opened.
’What happened here?’
She wondered. Something suddenly came to mind. She looked toward the house.
Then toward the farmland again.
’Don’t tell me he did all this?’
She had a strange feeling that the silent knight who had arrived with her father yesterday had something to do with this.
But that was impossible.
Wasn’t it?
To clear out this place in one night without alerting any of them seemed surreal.
Even with several men working together, she believed it would’ve taken them a full day, and yet...
Vivian stared at the perfectly prepared farmland for several moments.
Then she slowly raised her head.
"Wait, if he did this, then why isn’t he here?"
Her eyes searched the area, but she couldn’t spot him.
Only the quiet morning breeze moved through the newly prepared fields.
After walking through the outskirts of the town and eventually making his way deeper into the busier parts of the settlement, Osborne finally arrived at his destination.
Standing before him was a large building that was considerably bigger than most of the structures surrounding it, with a wooden sign hanging above the entrance that carried the image of a sword and shield.
Osborne raised his head slightly.
’So this is the Adventurer’s Guild.’
He had already heard about such organizations from the original novel, although he had never actually visited one himself.
It was one of the few places in the kingdom where people from different backgrounds could gather and take on jobs without needing to belong to a noble household or serve under a specific lord.
For someone in his current situation, it was practically perfect.
Osborne pushed open the large wooden doors and stepped inside.
The moment he entered, a wave of noise immediately reached his ears.
The hall was filled with chatter.
Several groups of adventurers were gathered around tables, talking amongst themselves while eating and drinking, while others stood near the large mission board located against one of the walls.
Some adventurers were entering the guild while others were leaving, many carrying weapons, bags, or pieces of equipment that made it obvious they had just returned from completing a mission.
The entire place was lively.
Osborne stood near the entrance for a moment, quietly observing everything around him.
’Quite different from the noble household.’
The Roosevelt estate had always been quiet and orderly.
Even when there were many people moving around, everyone knew their place and behaved accordingly.
This place was completely different.
There were adventurers laughing loudly, people arguing over missions, and even a few individuals who looked like they had already started drinking despite the fact that it wasn’t even noon yet.
Osborne couldn’t help but find it somewhat interesting.
However, while he was observing the guild, several people were also observing him.
His full suit of armor immediately made him stand out.
Unlike the other adventurers, whose faces were mostly visible, Osborne’s helmet covered his entire face, leaving only the faint glow of his eyes visible through the openings.
The long claymore resting at his side only made his appearance more intimidating.
A few adventurers glanced toward him before returning to their conversations.
Others continued staring for a little longer.
"Who is that?"
"Never seen him before."
"Looks like a knight. Wonder what he could be doing here."
"What else? Probably here to find some idiot who dared to piss off one of them noble cunts." One whispered.
"Hey, watch it! You tired of living?" Another whispered strongly, their expression agitated.
Osborne ignored the whispers.
There was no reason to respond.
He simply walked toward the reception counter.
Behind the counter sat a young woman who looked to be around twenty years old.
She had long blonde hair tied into two pigtails, while her blue eyes were currently fixed on Osborne.
The moment he approached, she straightened her back.
She had dealt with many adventurers since beginning her work at the guild, including some rather rough individuals, but the man standing in front of her still made her nervous.
To her, it was her first encounter with an actual knight.
Even though he hadn’t said anything threatening, she couldn’t help feeling as if a dangerous beast had suddenly walked into the guild.
She forced a professional smile onto her face.
"Good afternoon, sir. Is there something I can help you with?"
Osborne looked at her.
"I’d like to register as an adventurer."
The receptionist blinked.
For a brief moment, she wondered if she had heard him correctly.
"An adventurer?"
Osborne nodded.
The tension in her shoulders immediately disappeared.
Though confusion still remained.
"Oh..."
’Why would a knight want to be an adventurer?’ She didn’t understand the logic behind it.
But she wasn’t one to pry. After all, curiosity killed the cat.
