Diary of a Criminal Investigator
Chapter 1029: Suspect Identified by Surveillance
On the burnt lighter, Lu Chuan has already extracted fingerprints.
Although the fingerprints are not complete, only one-tenth the size of normal fingerprints, they are sufficient for Lu Chuan.
In addition, Lu Chuan discovered some footprints beneath many debris, which, although not particularly complete, provided some basis for judging the perpetrator’s conditions.
The footprints of the supermarket owner renting the warehouse have already been collected by someone under Lu Chuan’s direction.
Based on the current information, the supermarket individual renting the warehouse usually goes alone or takes his wife to collect items.
Therefore, Lu Chuan needs to exclude the footprints belonging to the supermarket owner among the discovered fingerprints and footprints.
Of course, this is just one aspect because it’s not guaranteed that the case is unrelated to the supermarket owner renting the warehouse.
Moreover, delivery people also have the opportunity to enter the warehouse and leave footprints.
Nevertheless, the remnants found beneath the fire scene are still helpful for Lu Chuan in narrowing down the range of suspects.
The first night after the incident, nobody rested and stayed up all night.
Crucial clues to the case were discovered the next morning.
Firstly, the identities of the two victims have now been officially confirmed.
The male victim, Gao Dezhi, was the boss of a small nearby supermarket.
The female victim, Wang Min, was a tenant about three hundred meters from the warehouse and worked as a hotel receptionist near the train station.
In the conference room, Chen Jiang was reporting the relevant situation to everyone.
"We copied all the surveillance footage around the crime scene and reviewed them frame by frame. Two cameras caught the front door of the warehouse where the incident occurred."
Last night, Chen Jiang’s team worked through the night, with a dozen or twenty people reviewing the footage, especially the two cameras capturing the front door, not missing a second. These cameras indeed revealed significant clues.
On the projector, a segment of the footage was playing.
"This is last night’s surveillance footage at 10:43 pm; everyone look here."
The surveillance video’s resolution is not very high, and because it’s nighttime, only a vague outline can be seen.
In the footage, a man can be clearly seen using a key to open the warehouse door.
Then he went inside and never came out.
Less than ten minutes later, a woman appeared in the footage.
Chen Jiang paused the video and continued with the introduction.
"The man who appeared in the surveillance video is the male victim, Gao Dezhi. After discovering his traces, we further checked. Other surveillance videos captured him leaving his small supermarket, and three cameras spotted him clearly, so the process is continuous. We investigated why he had the warehouse key."
It turns out Gao Dezhi is acquainted with the supermarket owner renting the warehouse.
The warehouse rented was filled with supermarket items due to some spare space, so Gao Dezhi stored some of his small supermarket’s inventory there, paying the supermarket owner 200 yuan a month.
It was effectively a shared rental of the warehouse.
"We have already confirmed this matter with the supermarket owner and the family of the victim, Gao Dezhi."
Chen Jiang continued to present the video.
The woman in the video stood at the warehouse entrance, looked around, knocked on the door, then squeezed through after the door opened a little.
"The woman in the video is the female victim, Wang Min, who rents accommodation about two to three hundred meters away in a self-built house."
There was surveillance at the entrance of Wang Min’s rented house, and it was high-definition. Following further investigation, two cameras captured her. Chen Jiang conducted thorough research.
"After confirming their identities early this morning, we investigated the call records of the two individuals and found their phone communication was very frequent. However, each call lasted very briefly."
Since their phones were not found post-murder, they were likely burnt at the crime scene.
Lu Chuan discovered some phone remnants at the scene as well.
Initially attempting to recover data with some technical methods, Lu Chuan eventually gave up owing to the extensive damage.
Chen Jiang continued: "Gao Dezhi’s small supermarket is the only store within 500 meters nearby."
"Wang Min should frequently shop at this store, yet their call frequency far exceeded mere shopping transactions."
The screen displayed their call records, showing most communications occurred late at night or in the early hours.
"We roughly investigated the family circumstances of the female victim, Wang Min."
The projector displayed a photo of a woman.
Although Wang Min was 33 years old, her skin was fair and well-maintained.
The photo looked very beautiful.
"Wang Min works as a receptionist at a hotel near the train station; her husband is a railway section contractor."
"His work nature is unique, with railway section maintenance usually occurring late at night, so Wang Min’s husband is generally home during the day and goes out for work at night."
Based on existing investigation clues, Chen Jiang reasonably deduced that the victims, Wang Min and Gao Dezhi, likely held a secret affair or some form of improper intimate relationship.
And the surveillance video at the warehouse entrance further validated this point; the duo sneaking in at around ten o’clock at night.
What could they be doing?
Chen Jiang continued to report: "However, on the night of the incident, Wang Min’s husband, Li Jun, who should have been working at the railway section, appeared at the scene."
The surveillance video was played, showing the time at 10:59 pm.
In the video, a figure stealthily approached the warehouse, first listening intently at the door, then peering through a window.
Perhaps hearing or seeing something, though the surveillance didn’t capture specifics, this man immediately exited the monitoring range.
"Judging from the height, this man should be Wang Min’s husband, Li Jun, and we also found his traces in other surveillance footage."
Chen Jiang is a seasoned detective.
He’s dealt with similar cases numerous times—husbands suspecting wives of infidelity and tracking them is an unending scenario.
After Wang Min left her rented accommodation, Chen Jiang and his team identified Li Jun’s presence in the related camera footage, consistently following Wang Min, albeit a few minutes behind.
