Diary of a Criminal Investigator

Chapter 993: Two Lines Pointing to the Same Person

  • Next Chapter

Lu Chuan focused on searching the back seat and passenger seat, quickly collecting some fingerprints on the dashboard opposite the passenger seat.

A hair was also found under the seat.

There were traces of hair and skin flakes left on the back seat as well.

After completing these routine checks, Lu Chuan instructed the provincial Criminal Investigation Team to tow Wang Dezhi’s car back.

Since no one had touched the car after Wang Dezhi disappeared, many clues inside could serve as valid evidence.

Upon returning to the Criminal Investigation Team, Lu Chuan immediately began the related analysis and identification of the collected fingerprints, skin flakes, and hair, hoping these clues would help identify relevant individuals.

While Lu Chuan was working busily, the provincial Criminal Investigation Team also made some progress.

In the surveillance around the crime scene near the abandoned logistics park, the team collaborated with the traffic police brigade to query all recordings from the past three months, especially the 30 days since victim Wang Dezhi’s disappearance.

The focus was on checking the number of BMW cars passing through during this period.

Although the tire marks at the crime scene confirmed the BMW car’s production year as three years ago, the surveillance footage couldn’t show the differences between these vehicles. After all, three years ago, BMW cars only had a minor facelift.

The annual difference wasn’t significant, especially with unclear surveillance footage.

Therefore, the team extracted all BMW cars and cross-referenced them with the owner’s information in the system.

The method was simple but challenging to execute, requiring a lot of time and manpower for comparison.

Considering a single day’s traffic could reach over ten thousand vehicles, with roughly hundreds of BMWs each day, this totaled about 3,000 vehicles in 30 days.

This workload was indeed substantial.

Wang Song learned from the transport company that Wang Dezhi might have had a mistress and pursued this lead strongly.

Regarding some of Wang Dezhi’s business rivals, President Wang didn’t ease up on the investigation either. Although he had contacted one or two, there hadn’t been any directional clues yet.

Moreover, from the current understanding, disputes and competition in business didn’t seem intense enough to drive someone to such drastic measures as murder.

Let alone cut the body into 128 pieces after the murder; it must have been a deep-seated grudge.

Business interactions were merely about who secured more jobs, who did less. Over the years, these companies operated similarly, sometimes Wang Dezhi’s company did more, and sometimes others did more.

Overall, it was relatively balanced, and occasionally, these companies cooperated and competed, which was the norm in their business.

But the situation at the scene—Wang Dezhi’s dire death—made everyone feel there was certainly deep-seated hatred, estimating perhaps something as extreme as killing a husband to steal his wife.

Time passed quickly.

Two days had passed since the body was discovered.

The major crimes unit had made significant progress, with each clue yielding some concrete findings, but the time left was increasingly limited.

Li Donglin had received two calls consecutively, both from leaders at different levels inquiring about the progress of the investigation.

An important event organized by the provincial capital was three days away, and if the case wasn’t solved by then, it might negatively affect the city’s image.

Three days!

Only three days left.

This was Li Donglin’s final ultimatum.

To be frank, Li Donglin, having worked as a detective for many years, encountered for the first time such a multi-layered demand to solve a murder case in five days.

But there was no choice.

The upper-level requirements and considerations were multi-dimensional and multi-tiered; they understood that solving a case was extremely difficult and should follow objective rules, but sometimes things were unavoidable.

Li Donglin could only comply with orders; that evening, he immediately convened relevant personnel for another case analysis meeting.

But this case analysis meeting was brief, conveying the leadership’s demands for the case, urging everyone to solve it in the shortest possible time.

“Everyone, I understand that solving cases must adhere to objective rules, and some cases can’t just be cracked like this. But everyone must give this case their utmost attention. The leadership highly emphasizes it, and it greatly impacts the image of our provincial capital city.”

Lu Chuan, who was still conducting experiments, was urgently called back to attend the meeting.

Wang Song and Song Mingguang, who were also searching for clues, were similarly called back for the meeting.

“Director Li, I have some important clues, but they are still being pursued. Give me some time; by tomorrow afternoon, we should have some progress. If we can confirm it, the case should be close to being solved.”

Before the meeting adjourned, Song Mingguang suddenly said to Li Donglin.

“Really? Good, good, good!”

Li Donglin looked at Song Mingguang: “If you have any difficulties, tell me. Need people, you’ve got them; need money, you’ve got it; need cars, you’ve got them. Whatever it takes to solve the case, I will give it. The leadership said to spare no expense!”

Li Donglin knew very well that some cases seem unsolvable, but with enough manpower and resources, they indeed might be cracked.

Regarding the instructions for this case from above, it was to spare no expense and utilize all possible resources to solve it.

Li Donglin had already thought about it; if this meeting didn’t yield any concrete, directional clues, he would mobilize the entire police force in the provincial capital.

Currently, the major crimes unit’s investigation mode still follows a traditional approach.

Analyzing the case, aiming at clues, conducting focused investigations.

The resources involved were only the major crimes unit members, the provincial Criminal Investigation Team, and some local police stations for support.

But if this approach does not work or cannot produce significant effects in a short period, Li Donglin would mobilize all provincial capital police forces for this case tomorrow.

As of now, the probability of Wang Dezhi being killed by an acquaintance is high.

Therefore, finding everyone in Wang Dezhi’s social circle and conducting a thorough investigation—tracking down and probing—will surely uncover some clues.

Though this method is cumbersome, requiring substantial manpower for comprehensive screening, Li Donglin would avoid using this approach unless absolutely necessary.
