Chapter 712: Magic Apprentice
Chapter 712: Chapter 712: Magic Apprentice
Of the three pieces of black bread, Shu Feng’s was the largest. Mina’s was the next largest, while Buffy’s own piece was the smallest.
Mina gave a cheer, scrambling out of bed and over to the table. She stared eagerly at her piece of black bread. She hadn’t eaten nearly enough yesterday.
In fact, Buffy’s entire family was in a perpetual state of hunger; none of them ever had enough to eat.
"A Mage has taken an interest in me. She wants to take me on as a Magic Apprentice. From today on, we won’t have to eat black bread anymore."
Shu Feng announced this as he came to the table, his brow furrowing slightly at the sour smell wafting from the black bread.
"A Magic Apprentice! That’s wonderful! My son, you truly are the best!"
Buffy’s eyes lit up, flashing with excitement.
Mages were the most revered figures in the Gulondo World. Even a mere Magic Apprentice was an incredible VIP to someone like Buffy, who lived in the slums.
"Does learning Magic cost a lot of money?"
A sudden unease flickered in Buffy’s eyes.
In the Gulondo World, all knowledge was extremely expensive, and knowledge that held Power was even more so. A Magic Apprentice from the slums would find it nearly impossible to learn Magic and become a Mage without a sponsor or some other lucky break.
Shu Feng said, "Don’t worry. My tuition is fully covered, and that noble lady will also sponsor my studies. Of course, in exchange, I must serve her once my training is complete."
Buffy finally let out a sigh of relief. "That’s wonderful! Paul, when you become a Mage, you must never forget that lady’s kindness. You have to repay her properly."
"I will," Shu Feng replied.
"Let’s eat breakfast," Buffy said. "You’ll need your strength to study Magic!"
"I’m not eating. You and Mina should have more."
Shu Feng sawed the piece of black bread in his bowl in half and placed the pieces into Buffy’s and Mina’s bowls.
"Thank you, Brother!"
Mina cheered, dunking the black bread straight into her soup before taking small bites.
The black bread was so hard that even after being soaked, it was impossible to take large bites.
A gratified look appeared in Buffy’s eyes as she began to eat her black bread.
"I’m going out to do the laundry!"
Buffy announced after clearing the table from breakfast.
"Buffy, why are you still washing clothes? Come on, come work with me! With your looks, you could easily make ten copper coins a day. That’s ten copper coins! Enough to buy ten loaves of black bread. And if you get a generous client, you could even make a silver coin or two in a single day."
"You remember Jena, right? She landed a generous client a few days ago and made two silver coins in one go. You’re much prettier than she is. If you get lucky, you could make three silver coins in a day."
A plain-looking, middle-aged woman wearing cheap makeup strode in, speaking bluntly.
"Matty, no! I won’t do that kind of work!"
Buffy refused, gritting her teeth. She knew that if she stooped to that level, her daughter, Mina, would likely follow the same path, and her son would lose all respect for her.
"Buffy, you need to think this through. You still have these two little ones to feed. You can get by washing clothes for now, but what will you do when winter comes? If you get sick, these two will have no one. They’ll be dead."
Matty sneered, pointing a finger at Shu Feng and Mina, her eyes glinting with ridicule.
Matty had dragged countless women in the slum down with her. Even those who initially had a sense of shame eventually compromised for the sake of their children, sinking into depravity.
"Paul’s Magic studies will probably cost a lot of money."
A conflicted look flashed in Buffy’s eyes. ’If it were just me, I’d rather die than do something like that. But for my two children...’ She was torn.
Shu Feng said icily, "That’s enough, Matty. Get out! You’re not welcome in our home!"
"You little bastard, how dare you talk to me like that! Boss Jilong is my nephew’s boss! Are you looking to die, you little brat? Believe me, I can make sure you never see another sunrise."
Matty planted her hands on her hips, glaring at Shu Feng like a fishwife ready for a shouting match.
"And what do you think you’re doing to my apprentice?"
Just then, a cold voice cut in from the side. A beautiful, noble-looking woman in a black Mage’s Robe entered and spoke icily.
A middle-aged man in a butler’s uniform stood respectfully beside the beautiful Female Mage.
"M-M-Mage... Lady Mage!"
The moment Matty saw the beautiful woman in the black Mage’s Robe, her face went pale. Her legs gave out from under her, and she collapsed to her knees, her eyes wide with Fear.
In the Gulondo World, any official Mage held a status equivalent to that of a noble.
As long as a Mage didn’t commit a full-blown massacre in the slums, no one would bat an eye if they killed a commoner or two.
The Power of Mages was etched into the mind of every person in the Gulondo World. While the path of the Knight also existed, the path of the Mage was, without a doubt, the most powerful.
"Greetings, Lady Mage!"
Buffy’s expression changed instantly. She pulled Mina down to her knees and bowed her head respectfully.
A young nobleman had once visited the slums out of curiosity, and he’d had the legs of every commoner who failed to kneel before him broken.
From that day forward, Buffy understood that people of the Upper Class, like nobles and Mages, were not to be trifled with.
The ultimate dream of many girls in the slums was to marry a nobleman and rise from rags to riches. Unfortunately, this dream was all but impossible.
"Greetings, Teacher Jessica."
Shu Feng bowed to Jessica with a calm and respectful demeanor.
’A Divine Spirit Level powerhouse is bowing to me!’
Jessica panicked internally and almost dodged out of the way, but she managed to keep a straight face and gave a slight nod.
Jessica said coolly, "Paul, you can’t possibly study in a place like this. Come to my villa. Only there will you be able to learn the various arts of Magic."
Matty’s face went white, her eyes filled with Despair. ’It’s over! To think that little mutt is so important to this Mage. I’m doomed!’
"Yes, Teacher," Shu Feng said. "However, Teacher, I hope to bring my mother and sister with me to the villa. I’ll be able to focus on my studies better that way."
Buffy quickly interrupted, "Lady Jessica, please don’t listen to him! My daughter and I will be fine here. Paul is a good boy; please don’t hold this against him. He will certainly serve you well in the future."
