Chapter 652 - 652: The Kneeling Wolf Pack
While everyone watched in stunned silence, Zhao Yuan had already walked right up to the alpha wolf.
At this moment, the twenty-odd wolves surrounding them abandoned the others and swarmed over to join their alpha.
Over twenty pairs of gleaming green eyes stared intently at Zhao Yuan. The scene was truly terrifying. Having seen his fair share of intense situations, Zhao Yuan was unfazed, but the group of hikers felt their scalps tingle with fear, their faces turning pale.
The twenty-plus wolves gathered together were far more intimidating and terrifying than when they were scattered!
The burly man, fearing Zhao Yuan would be at a disadvantage, raised his gun and started to follow, ready to provide cover.
Seeing this, another man cried out in alarm, "Brother Hu, don't go! We should take this chance while that kid's got the wolves busy and run for it!"
Hearing this, Lin Xue, who had gone to the injured man's side to help treat his wounds, couldn't help but look up and shoot the speaker a disdainful glare.
The burly man's expression darkened. Without turning his head, he said, "Someone else is risking his life to save us, and you want me to run away? I can't do that! If you want to go, go. But when you do, remember to take the injured Xiang Ping and the three ladies with you!"
The man hesitated for a moment, then grit his teeth, turned around, and broke into a run.
He didn't listen to the burly man's words about taking the injured companion and the women, choosing instead to save his own skin.
As he ran, he shouted, "Don't blame me! There's no way to get out of this godforsaken forest with an injured man and women! I'll owe you my life for this! From now on, every Qing Ming and on the anniversaries of your deaths, I'll burn incense and paper money for you."
Inwardly, he was praying, 'I hope those damn hungry wolves fill their stomachs after eating these people and don't come after me.'
"Shi Qi, you bastard!" the burly man roared in fury. He never would have thought the man could be such a coward, abandoning his companions to save himself in the face of danger.
But in the end, this coward named Shi Qi didn't manage to get away.
This was a forest with complex terrain. In his panicked flight, Shi Qi wasn't watching where he was going at all. He hadn't taken more than a few steps before he was tripped by an exposed tree root, falling flat on his face.
He struggled to get up, only to get tangled in the vines and bushes on the ground. The more he struggled and panicked, the more ensnared he became.
'It's over, it's over. I'm going to die here today,' Shi Qi's heart filled with despair. 'After those hungry wolves kill Hu Shiqing and the others, they'll definitely chase me down and kill me too.'
But events didn't unfold as he had imagined. He waited and waited, but no screams or howls came. Puzzled, he twisted his head to look back toward the wolf pack.
And then he saw a sight that shocked him to his core—a scene he would never forget for the rest of his life!
Not only were the twenty-odd wolves not attacking Zhao Yuan, they were prostrating themselves before him!
That's right, they were prostrating themselves!
The wolves' forelegs were flat on the ground, their heads bowed extremely low, and their hindquarters were raised high. No matter how you looked at it, it seemed they were kneeling in worship.
"What's going on?" Shi Qi's mouth hung open in shock. He seriously suspected he was hallucinating.
Wolves, kneeling?
And kneeling to a person, no less?
The whole thing was just too bizarre, too terrifying!
At that moment, Shi Qi wasn't the only one frightened by this bizarre scene.
Hu Shiqing, standing behind Zhao Yuan with his gun raised, was also completely dumbfounded.
The two women, who had been clinging to each other in fear, forgot their terror. They just stared blankly at the kneeling pack of wolves and at Zhao Yuan, who was receiving their worship.
As for Xiang Ping, lying on the ground receiving first aid from Lin Xue, he too forgot the pain. His mouth was wide open, but not to groan—it was from sheer astonishment.
Only Lin Xue wasn't surprised. In fact, she had an 'as-it-should-be' expression on her face. In her eyes, Zhao Yuan was a powerful Cultivator. Terrifying a wolf pack into submission? Wasn't that a simple task for him?
This time, however, Lin Xue had guessed wrong.
Zhao Yuan had indeed intimidated the wolf pack with his aura. But the one that truly made them kneel in worship wasn't him, but the White Cat!
Zhao Yuan had seen it clearly. Before the White Cat appeared, the wolves were certainly frightened of him, but they had no intention of kneeling. They just wanted to tuck their tails between their legs and run.
But when the White Cat appeared, the pack's attitude changed instantly. Zhao Yuan could see the wolves were afraid, trembling.
These vicious wolves were even more terrified of the White Cat than they were of Zhao Yuan! And then they prostrated themselves, as if paying homage to their queen!
Having witnessed the White Cat's miraculous abilities so many times, Zhao Yuan wasn't surprised that it could subdue a pack of wolves. At the same time, though, he grew even more curious about the White Cat's identity and origins.
Glancing sideways at the White Cat, Zhao Yuan muttered in his heart, 'Xiaobai, oh Xiaobai, what kind of animal are you, really?'
It could predict fortune and disaster, find treasures, challenge an Exotic Beast like the Raccoon Power, and suppress countless other animals...
Xiaobai's identity definitely couldn't be that of a normal cat.
Unfortunately, Zhao Yuan couldn't communicate with it verbally, so he couldn't ask it for the truth.
Zhao Yuan waved his hand, about to shoo the wolves away, but just then, the White Cat pawed at him.
After spending so much time together, Zhao Yuan and the White Cat had developed a deep understanding. Though they couldn't speak the same language, the White Cat's gesture made Zhao Yuan immediately understand its meaning. 'You have a different idea?'
The White Cat leaped off Zhao Yuan's shoulder, scurried up to the alpha wolf, tapped it on the head with its little paw, and meowed twice.
The alpha wolf nodded repeatedly, as if it understood the White Cat's meaning. The White Cat then meowed again, and the alpha immediately stood up and led its pack, weaving back and forth through the woods.
"Huh?"
Zhao Yuan was surprised to see that the wolves weren't just running around aimlessly; they seemed to be patrolling. As they moved, their heads were constantly swiveling around, and at the slightest rustle, a wolf would dash over to check it out.
'Wait... patrolling?'
A flash of inspiration struck Zhao Yuan, and he understood the White Cat's intention. He picked it up and whispered, "You want to use this pack of wolves as guards for the herbal medicine farm?"
The White Cat nodded. It had actually understood him.
Zhao Yuan wasn't surprised or weirded out; he had long since experienced the White Cat's intelligence. He was worried about something else. "Will they hurt the villagers?"
The White Cat shook its head and shot Zhao Yuan a disdainful glare, as if to say, 'These wolves are my servants. Dare to harm people? They wouldn't dare!'
