Chapter 148: Chapter 140: Scared by a Dog

Hu Feng went to his room to change into a set of dry clothes. He then sat at the table, leisurely finished his meal, and finally picked up the lunch Hu Changlin had prepared and carried it to the wooden cabin out back.

Bai Zhi was in front of the cabin hanging freshly washed clothes. When she saw Hu Feng approach, her face couldn’t help but flush. She quickly averted her gaze and asked, her throat dry, "What are you doing here?"

Hu Feng glanced at the wooden cabin. Zhao Lan was inside, busy with something or other, but nowhere to be seen. He leaned in closer, a deep smile surfacing in his eyes as he lowered his voice. "I’m here to bring you lunch, of course. What else would I be doing? Or perhaps... what did you have in mind?"

Bai Zhi’s face grew even hotter. She snatched the dishes from his hands and said defiantly, "So I can do whatever I want? Are you really that obedient?"

Hu Feng shrugged and crossed his arms. The smile in his eyes deepened. "That depends on whether your request is reasonable. Why don’t you try me?"

Bai Zhi bit her lip, stepped forward, and stomped hard on his foot. "I’m telling you to get lost. Disappear. Now."

He didn’t even frown when she stomped on him. With her small frame and slender legs, her stomp felt more like a mosquito bite. It didn’t hurt at all.

"Don’t forget about the dumplings tonight."

Bai Zhi ignored him, shutting the door with a loud SLAM.

"What’s wrong? Who are you angry at?" Zhao Lan put down her needlework and looked up at her daughter.

Bai Zhi shook her head. "Nothing. A dog’s bark startled me, that’s all. I’m fine."

Zhao Lan rolled her eyes at her. "Look at you, you’re a grown woman. How can you still be afraid of a dog barking? And here I thought you were so brave."

Bai Zhi picked up a steamed bun from the plate and took a bite. "I’m not usually scared," she mumbled, her mouth full. "But it just barked so suddenly. It was startling."

An image of Hu Feng’s half-smiling face flashed through her mind. ’I really want to slap myself. How could I say something like that to a man? What must he think of me?’

’This isn’t the 23rd century. Here, people don’t take jokes like that as jokes...’

’Oh my god, I really hate this mouth of mine.’

Perhaps it was because she was exhausted from the busy morning, but as soon as she finished eating, she felt incredibly drowsy. Her head had barely hit the pillow before she was dead to the world, the embarrassing incident from moments ago completely forgotten.

Zhao Lan tucked the thin blanket around her. Looking at her daughter’s peaceful sleeping face, she felt that all the hardships she had endured over the past ten years were worth it.

「At 3:00 PM.」

A KNOCK KNOCK KNOCK sounded at the cabin door. Zhao Lan quickly put down her needlework and hurried to open it.

Hu Feng’s tall figure stood outside. "Where’s Zhi?" he asked Zhao Lan.

Zhao Lan answered by pointing inside, a questioning look on her face.

Hu Feng’s gaze followed the direction Zhao Lan pointed. The figure on the bed, as if hearing a sound, rolled over in annoyance to continue sleeping. As she did, the thin blanket on her stomach slid to the floor, and her arm inadvertently pushed up the hem of her clothes, revealing a strip of her smooth, pale waist.

Hu Feng’s eyes darkened for a moment before he quickly averted his gaze. "Zhi said we’re having dumplings tonight," he said in a low voice. "You should probably wake her up to make them. It’ll be too late otherwise."

Zhao Lan had naturally seen her daughter’s disheveled state as well. "Alright," she quickly agreed. "I’ll wake her now. You should head back."

Hu Feng turned and left. She quickly closed the door, hurried to the bedside to fix her daughter’s clothes, and gently shook her shoulder. "Zhi’er, wake up."

Bai Zhi mumbled drowsily, "Ugh, just let me sleep a little longer... Just a little bit!"
