The violent impact reverberated across the dead city, sending tremors rippling through the cracked asphalt. Debris cascaded from crumbling balconies, crashing onto forgotten vehicles below.

Inside the armored lead transport, Raviah gripped the edge of the metal console to steady herself.

Her core pulsed in agonizing, synchronized throbs beneath her ribs, vibrating against the ambient energy surrounding them. On the primary monitor, the colossal outer wall remained motionless, its intricate silver markings flickering like dormant veins coming to life.

Rhyder leaned over the comms console, his harsh command cutting through the noise. "Reconnaissance team, report your status immediately."

The scout’s voice crackled over the speaker, tight with tension. "All personnel accounted for, General. The ground shook violently, but the wall hasn’t sustained any visible damage. We still haven’t identified the source of the impact."

"Maintain your distance," Rhyder ordered, his jaw setting firmly. "Nobody approaches that wall until we understand what we’re dealing with."

He turned toward Raviah, his dark eyes searching her pale face. "What are you sensing?"

Closing her eyes, Raviah focused inward and extended a thin thread of root energy toward the distant, towering structure. Her mind brushed against the outer layer, reaching deeper into the soil beneath the perimeter.

Something ancient answered from deep underground.

It was not a conscious thought or a voice she could recognize. Instead, a rhythmic pulse traveled through the subterranean earth, passing under the wall and stretching into the heart of the dead city.

Raviah opened her eyes, her breath catching in her throat. "There’s massive energy circulating beneath the streets. It’s moving along a fixed network, almost like an underground root system."

Rhyder frowned slightly, stepping closer to her console. "Could it be connected to the wall?"

"Possibly," Raviah murmured, instinctively reaching toward her storage space to ensure her supplies and medical gear were ready for deployment. "I can’t determine whether the network is biological, technological, or a strange combination of both."

Rhyder tapped the external frequency switch to broadcast across the entire expedition force.

"All units, prepare to advance. Reconnaissance teams will establish a secure route through the perimeter, Elementals will maintain defensive formations, and nobody engages an unidentified organism without explicit authorization."

The orders echoed instantly through the convoy. Engines roared to life as armed transports shifted into formation.

The convoy advanced slowly toward a section where the wall’s dark surface had begun to fracture and separate. Unlike the seamless mechanical gateways of old facilities, this opening split between two enormous slabs of black material that withdrew straight into the earth.

No gears turned, and no visible mechanisms whirred. The barrier simply parted, yielding to their presence.

Every soldier in the front line raised their weapon in unison, rifles pointed into the darkness beyond.

An officer leaned over the driver’s partition, calling out to the front. "General, the entrance is actively responding to our approach."

"Or to something traveling with us," Raviah whispered under her breath.

Rhyder glanced at her briefly, though he offered no immediate reply. He signaled the lead armored vehicle forward, keeping the bulk of the expedition in cautious reserve.

Beyond the massive gateway lay a metropolis frozen in the middle of its own historical collapse. Towering skyscrapers stretched into the gray sky, their glass shattered and structural frames twisted from forgotten battles.

Overturned cars lay buried beneath decades of dust and concrete rubble at every intersection. Yet the most unsettling sight was the pale crystalline growth crawling across the ruins.

Translucent mineral formations encased concrete pillars and climbed the facades of decaying buildings, branching into delicate geometric patterns. Faint violet light pulsed rhythmically through their translucent interiors.

Raviah pressed her palm against the transport’s reinforced window, studying the glowing patterns. "These aren’t ordinary crystals."

Elias’s voice joined the radio channel from the rear science vessel. "Preliminary scans indicate an unusual concentration of elemental energy inside those structures. Their composition doesn’t match the crystalline deposits we’ve documented in mutated forests."

Rhyder stared at the glowing towers outside. "Are they alive?"

"I can’t confirm that remotely," Elias replied carefully.

Driven by curiosity, Raviah extended a microscopic thread of root energy toward the nearest crystal outside the window. The moment her energy made contact, the violet light inside the formation flared bright.

She instantly severed the connection, gasping as her core recoiled.

"It reacted to me," she said quietly.

Rhyder turned to her, his expression instantly hardening. "Then you won’t approach any of those structures without a full military escort."

"I wasn’t planning to touch them," Raviah argued, giving him a defiant look.

"You were thinking about it," Rhyder countered without hesitation.

She gave him a sidelong glance, a subtle shift in her posture easing the tension between them. "You don’t know what I was thinking."

"I know you," Rhyder stated plainly, a faint trace of warmth softening his stern eyes.

Before Raviah could respond, the transport’s underground scanner began emitting rapid, high-pitched alerts.

An officer bent over the glowing display screen. "General, we’re detecting multiple energy pulses beneath the roadway."

Rhyder moved to inspect the readings, tracking the digital signals. The energy markers appeared at specific intervals, moving through subterranean channels before converging beneath major city intersections.

"Mark every single location," Rhyder commanded. "We need a complete map of this underground network before nightfall."

The convoy proceeded deeper into the ruins, headlights cutting through streets that had not seen human life for years. Raviah maintained her focus on the shifting energy readings, noticing how the pulses intensified with every block they crossed.

Suddenly, the lead vehicle slammed on its brakes, bringing the entire column to a halt.

"General," the driver called back urgently, "we’re detecting a sudden, massive shift in the city’s energy output!"

Before Rhyder could issue a command, every crystalline formation along the surrounding skyscrapers ignited simultaneously. Intense violet light raced across the structures, cascading from building to building until the entire city grid blazed against the darkening sky.

A profound, low-frequency vibration rose from beneath the pavement, shaking the transport. Raviah’s core reacted violently, pulsing in harmony with the surging current underground.

One by one, the long-dead streetlights flickered to life.

Windows across every skyscraper blazed with bright white light, illuminating ruined interiors. Old neon signs crackled above deserted storefronts, flashing brilliant colors over dusty streets.

Structures that had been dark and abandoned for generations suddenly glowed as if the civilization had never fallen.

Inside the transport, the expedition’s diagnostic screens updated with warnings.

[EXTERNAL POWER GRID: NONFUNCTIONAL.]

[CITY ENERGY NETWORK: ACTIVE.]

Raviah stared at the impossible sight, her heart hammering against her ribs. Beneath their feet, the subterranean energy pulses accelerated into a rapid rhythm.

Deep within the heart of the dead city, a power had just switched the lights back on.
