Chapter 1033 -254: The Opening Move

The scorching sun hung high.

But the werewolves, who according to legend only appeared on nights of a full moon, seemed completely unaffected. Their sharp claws gouged grooves into the tamped earth walls as they climbed up with both hands and feet.

Governor Rumi’s personal guard widened his eyes: “Lord Governor, these Tatars are nothing short of monsters that have sold their souls to the Devil!”

Rumi raised an eyebrow: “What? Are you scared?”

The personal soldier was stunned, realizing that although he was shocked, he felt no panic deep down.

Under normal circumstances, who wouldn’t be afraid of such terrifying creatures besieging the city? Only those of them who had been with Rumi for a long time would barely be able to pick up their weapons and fight.

Those town militia who had been newly recruited for less than half a month would be considered brave if they didn’t wet their pants in fright.

Feeling ashamed under Rumi’s teasing gaze, the personal soldier suddenly drew his sword and said urgently: “Afraid? Afraid of what? To hell with these monsters!”

Rumi smiled calmly and raised his hand: “Sound the horn, let the Tatars experience our war machines!”

As the horn sounded, at both ends of the front wall, from towers protruding from the city walls, the crossbow cannons were unveiled, aiming at the werewolf First Army waiting to climb below the wall.

These were the only thirty giant crossbow machines in the Hoveysan warehouse, operated by two people using a mechanical winch, with incredible destructive power.

On the walls of Nishapur, already breached by the Tatars, it was said that there were thousands of such crossbow machines and hundreds of catapults arranged. It was with these war machines that Nishapur held out for so long, causing enormous casualties to the Tatars.

Unfortunately, Nishapur was eventually breached, and its 170,000 residents were slaughtered.

Clang—

The bowstrings vibrated like thunder, and the sound of arrows piercing the air was like the wails of ghosts.

Thirty crossbow arrows, with unstoppable force, flew towards the enemies below the wall.

An elite from Ivan’s forces felt his entire body momentarily suspended. The shield of iron in his hand was pierced, causing his body and that of his companion at his side to be impaled like candied hawthorns.

But possessed by the wolf spirit, he somehow survived the great injury, struggling desperately to climb off the crossbow arrow.

“Fire again!”

Rumi ordered indifferently: “The first squad hold out for fifteen minutes!”

Against such enemies, fire oil was the best weapon.

But Hoveysan was caught in a surprise attack, with limited reserves of fire oil, and this being the first formal assault, he decided to weigh these monsters’ worth against human lives.

After speaking, he instinctively turned his head to glance at Losa watching the battle.

“Your Majesty, am I commanding correctly?”

“Follow your rhythm. If your men can’t hold, my knights will charge.”

Behind the city walls, over thirty Monastic Knights, clad in various cross shirts, silently offered pre-battle prayers. They sat at ease as if they were about to embark not on a brutal battlefield, but a pleasant countryside sermon.

Over the years, whether in combat records or real-life demon hunts, they had encountered countless demons and evil spirits. These monsters resembling werewolves posed no real threat to them.

Rumi turned back, looking once more at the demon dragon lying like a small mountain in the town square, his worries finally abating a little.

At this moment, the two sides finally engaged on the city walls.

Nezami, seeing a head suddenly emerge from the city wall, instinctively picked up his hammer and smashed down fiercely.

The first squad of Sassan warriors was mostly composed of Ghazi Warriors who had participated in “Jihad” with Rumi, or family retainers who had served the Rumi Governor’s family for generations, part of Hoveysan’s only elite.

Nezami was the captain of the first squad, known in Hoveysan as a powerful strongman.

As he smashed down with the hammer, he felt invigorated, as if his aging body had suddenly regained its youth.

He swore that this blow was delivered with twice the force he had ever exerted before.

The helmeted werewolf was knocked off the wall. Nezami intended to repeat the action, but suddenly a sharp claw emerged beside him, gripping his warhammer.

Through the gap in the opponent’s helmet, he saw a pair of amber-colored beast eyes.

“Damn it!”

The strength from the other side was astonishing, but Nezami, equally fierce, held onto the warhammer without letting go, roaring: “Why are you standing there, cut this monster down for me!”

Before the words were out, swords and blades surged forth, piercing the werewolf’s Zha armor and turning it into a beehive.

Blood splattered everywhere.

Yet the werewolf still wouldn’t die. A swipe of its paw accompanied by a crunching sound crushed a Sassanid soldier’s head along with his iron helmet, its massive jaws lunging at Nezami’s head.

The stench of its breath came rushing in. Nezami barely managed to raise his warhammer to block the bite.

Crack, crack, crack—

The werewolf kept snapping at the air, its fangs clashing together producing a teeth-clenching sound.

Crack—

A Sassanid soldier from behind cleaved the werewolf’s head with an axe. The head was only half severed, pouring out a big gush of blood that made Nezami feel like vomiting up his intestines.

“Pass it on, these werewolves won’t die unless you cut off their heads!”

He shouted hurriedly, plunging back into the fight.

The intensity of the battle far exceeded Nezami’s expectations. Given Hoveysan’s terrain, the number of enemies that could be deployed at once was actually quite limited, but these werewolves broke this constraint. While each small battle saw these werewolves as outnumbered, there was a vast difference in strength between the two sides.

If not for the crossbow cannons on the two side towers, so many werewolves storming the city walls would have long established a secure foothold, expanding their territory continuously.
