Chapter 799: Chapter 680: Sudden Hostility

Li Shang’s face was equally grave, his brows furrowed into a deep frown.

He was exceedingly puzzled. Before this, he had never met this Zheng Geng, and had only heard his name from Secretary Hou today. How could he have possibly offended him?

"This Special Commissioner’s temper is even worse than what Secretary Hou warned about, and it’s more than just an issue of temper."

Li Shang rubbed his aching temples, feeling a wave of fatigue wash over him.

He glanced sideways at the Mechanical Department personnel standing beside him, feeling their watchful eyes like a thorn in his back.

His mind spun wildly, and a surge of uncontrollable frustration rose within him:

"Is he so eager to label me a suspect just because of mistrust, or does he not want me to return and participate in the investigation, afraid I’ll affect his case-solving? Steal his credit?"

Li Shang seemed to have figured out something.

Secretary Hou’s reminder at the hospital initially led him to misjudge Zheng Geng.

He originally thought that someone with such a bad and stubborn temper, and no faction, would be a fool who just focuses on work without personal gain and doesn’t know how to be flexible.

Now it seems he was completely wrong.

The other party might indeed be skilled at work, but that absolutely does not mean they are an honest and rigid fool who doesn’t know how to benefit themselves.

Quite the contrary, the other party might be more eager to advance than those with factions, and due to the lack of foundation and backing, once they seize the opportunity, they might be even more unscrupulous, radical, and adventurous.

Not joining any existing faction does not mean he doesn’t want to climb up; it might be because his ambition is greater, unwilling to be controlled and used as a pawn, but instead wants to sit at the table himself.

And this major case is just the springboard and opportunity for him to get to the table!

The more Li Shang thought about it, the more logical his deductions seemed, and a strong sense of unease suddenly arose within him:

"Damn it! Is this guy planning to directly frame me as the murderer?

This could indeed be the fastest way to solve the case... Damn, doesn’t he know I’m with Mr. Wang? Isn’t he afraid of offending Mr. Wang?"

"No, precisely because Mr. Wang is backing me, he wants even more to get a hold of me.

He can take this chance to blow up the case and direct the blame towards Mr. Wang behind me, and then... whoosh—"

Li Shang gasped in shock at his audacious conjecture,

"It’s not impossible, toppling a current Member of Parliament holds far more glory and influence than simply solving a case, especially since this case involves the Special Commissioner!"

Oh no, could this Special Commissioner Zheng be using his familiar case-solving logic to turn it around and trap him?!!

Li Shang shuddered, a chill running from his feet to his head.

"Damn it, Zheng Geng’s aim isn’t to solve the case, he wants to use this case to climb up to become a Member of Parliament.

It’s not impossible, after all, the quickest way to become a Member of Parliament is to topple one with your own hands, if I recall correctly, that’s how Mr. Wang Xinfa made a name for himself in the past..."

Li Shang swallowed hard; this case’s complexity and danger far exceeded his expectations.

He cursed silently in his heart:

"Another lunatic, what has the world come to?

Why do I keep running into these lunatics bent on a death-wish wherever I go recently?"

Li Shang felt his throat dry and sore, coughed twice, and spat on the ground.

Immediately, icily reminded:

"Captain Li, you better watch your actions and not casually disrupt the crime scene."

Li Shang was stunned upon hearing this, almost laughing in anger:

"It’s several hundred meters from here to the Special Commissioner’s villa."

The man from the Mechanical Department coldly and righteously stated:

"No, all the security guards at the entrance of the Jade Garden are dead, so the murderer committed murders all the way from here to the Special Commissioner’s villa, leading to the inference that the entire Jade Garden should be considered the crime scene.

Such simple reasoning, you are a Detective, surely you understand, or are you intentionally trying to destroy the crime scene?"

The man from the Mechanical Department wore an expression of scrutiny, his face full of deep suspicion.

Li Shang was caught off guard, laughing in rage.

The man was unmoved, taking out a handkerchief from his hand, bending down to wipe the floor dry.

Chang Erbing, who had been following Li Shang all this time, reacted quickly, darting forward, crouching down first to vigorously wipe the floor with his sleeve.

Li Shang’s face was somber as he patted Chang Erbing on the shoulder, feeling a bit relieved inwardly, silently thinking, "That was close."

As a joke, he wouldn’t dare let the other really pick up his "spit," who knows if they’d use it to solve the case.

Li Shang stopped spitting on the floor, nodded at Chang Erbing, and turned, striding into the Jade Garden, with Chang Erbing and several constables following behind, another man from the Mechanical Department quietly trailing at the very back.

The atmosphere along the way was downright oppressive.

Li Shang first headed straight for the luxurious villa of the Special Commissioner.

On the lawn around the villa, the previously strewn bodies had been cleared away, leaving only twisted human outlines marked with white powder inside, alongside patches of dark, dried blood.

The bodies had all been transported back to the Patrol Office morgue, awaiting detailed autopsies.

At the mention of autopsies, Li Shang felt a wave of headache.

Originally, the best forensic doctor at the Patrol Office was Bai Ye, rich in experience, excellent in skill, and trustworthy.

However, the latter had recently transferred to the Second Prison, and the new forensic doctor hadn’t been recruited yet, not even started being considered.

It wasn’t urgent initially because the Patrol Office wasn’t heavily reliant on forensic experts; it was just a report, after all. Someone else could write a flawless, compliant report just the same.

But this case couldn’t afford any carelessness; a professional forensic report was still needed.

Fortunately, getting this done was simple.

Li Shang immediately pulled out his communicator, walked a little farther, and called his good friend Feng Mu.

After the call connected, he explained the special nature and urgency of the situation, earnestly requesting to temporarily second Bai Ye back to the Patrol Office to assist with the autopsy work.

On the other end, Feng Mu agreed surprisingly readily:

"No problem, friends should help each other. You just need to have the Patrol Office send over a written secondment letter, and I’ll have Bai Ye sent back to the Patrol Office, like going back to help family."

Not only that, but Feng Mu also thoughtfully seconded Qin Liang as well.

Listening to Feng Mu’s straightforward and considerate arrangements, Li Shang felt a warmth in his heart, truly thinking this friendship wasn’t in vain.

After all, this case was a whirlpool; besides those with ulterior motives, most people would stay as far away as possible, let alone get involved.

Feng Mu’s willingness to lend a hand without a second thought was actually taking on significant risk.

If the forensic report had any issues later, both the forensic doctor who made it and Feng Mu who lent a hand would face circumstances they couldn’t possibly talk their way out of.

In short... this friendship, Li Shang noted silently in his heart.

The man from the Mechanical Department stood nearby, ears perked up, listening to Li Shang on the phone, quietly noting down "Feng Mu’s" name to report to Special Commissioner Zheng later.

His logic was simple and crude—since Special Commissioner Zheng deduced "Li Shang" had major suspicion in this case, anyone willing to help him must be an accomplice with major suspicion as well.

To make this case an iron-clad major case, every individual involved must be brought to justice; no one should escape.

Only in this way, with their blood, can a ladder be built for Special Commissioner Zheng to rise to a Member of Parliament.

The more blood, the higher the ladder!

Little did Li Shang know, his mere phone call, in the other’s eyes, was as good as confessing an accomplice.

It wasn’t that he wasn’t cautious enough, but he had never encountered such absurd case-solving in the past...

Li Shang hung up the phone, took a deep breath, and then walked into the Special Commissioner’s villa.....
