Harper’s POV

"If he was planning anything, then I needed to be ten steps ahead of him."

I sat on the edge of my bed, my legs tucked beneath me, staring blankly at my phone screen long after Justin’s call had ended. The soothing echo of his voice had faded, leaving only the quiet, heavy hum of my bedroom. But my mind was anything but quiet. It was a chaotic storm of churning thoughts.

There was something profoundly wrong about my father’s recent silence. It didn’t sit right with me. It felt like the eerie, suffocating calm that always precedes a devastating storm.

For months, he had been loud. Aggressive. Intrusive. He had made his presence known like a sudden, unwanted shadow over my life. He had caused endless friction, tried to interfere in my choices, and pushed his way into spaces where he didn’t belong. Every single time I thought I had built enough distance between us, something else would shatter the peace.

But now?

Absolute, total silence.

No texts. No late-night missed calls. No unannounced visits. No demands. Nothing.

And somehow, that utter absence of noise was infinitely more terrifying than his anger had ever been.

People didn’t just transform overnight. They didn’t simply drop a crusade they had been obsessed with for months. Especially not my father. He was a man driven by ego, control, and self-preservation. A sudden retreat meant only one thing: he was shifting tactics. He was plotting in the dark.

I picked up my phone, my knuckles turning white as I squeezed the edges.

"If you’re planning something," I whispered into the quiet room, my voice laced with a cold, sharp edge, "I’m going to find out what it is first."

I knew exactly where I needed to begin.

If I was going to protect myself, my family, and my future, I needed intelligence. I needed to understand what he was up to, where he was spending his time, and what resources he was quietly assembling. And if I was truly going through with this personal documentary about Mom, I needed to be armed with the truth.

This documentary wasn’t going to be some light, frivolous passion project. It was going to tell her story her raw, unvarnished truth. Her survival, her strength, and her side of the absolute hell we had survived. And whether I liked it or not, my father was a major, toxic piece of that history.

What if Mom brought up the darker years? What if she talked about the psychological toll of the way he abandoned us? What if she spoke openly about the financial strain and the emotional wreckage he left in his wake?

If the project gained traction online if people actually listened he would inevitably feel cornered. His fragile ego wouldn’t be able to handle public scrutiny. He would come after me, using every dirty trick in his arsenal to silence us.

I needed leverage. I needed something so concrete, so devastatingly effective, that it would force him to think twice before ever coming near us again.

I opened Facebook, my thumb hovering over the search bar. I typed in his name.

His profile popped up almost instantly. I stared at his profile picture for a long, heavy moment before tapping on it. I hadn’t looked at his digital life in years. I had actively avoided it, burying my head in the sand because looking at his happiness felt like salt in an open wound. I didn’t even know why I hadn’t thought to investigate him like this before.

I began scrolling.

His curated life looked painfully, infuriatingly pristine.

Photos from upscale dinner parties. Glossy snapshots from high-end corporate galas. Lavish holiday vacations. Pictures outside fine-dining establishments. Family reunions at country clubs. Brand-new luxury cars. Pristine outfits.

Every single post screamed wealth, privilege, and comfort a life light-years removed from the scraping, anxious existence my mother, my siblings, and I had endured for years after he walked out.

I kept scrolling down the timeline, my jaw set tight. I stopped looking at his face and started studying the people surrounding him. The commenters. The individuals tagging him. His business associates. His friends. His extended network.

Eventually, through a series of tagged photos, I tracked down his new wife’s family.

Her parents. Her siblings. Her cousins.

I clicked through profile after profile, methodically piecing together the pristine, high-society ecosystem he had slipped into after discarding us.

Then, my thumb froze over the screen.

It was a post from his new wife’s account, uploaded a few years back. I read the caption once. Then I read it again, my heart taking a sudden, violent plunge into my stomach.

"So endlessly blessed to welcome our first son and the very first grandchild of our family tree."

My eyebrows pulled together, a cold knot forming in the pit of my stomach. "What?"

I read the words a third time, trying to make the English language align with my reality. First son. First grandchild.

I stared at the glowing screen. That made no sense. My father already had a son. He already had daughters. He had us. We were his flesh and blood. How could she possibly write a public caption celebrating her baby as his "first son" and the "first grandchild"?

Did she not know?

Was it possible that she genuinely had no idea her husband had a whole former life? That he had a previous marriage? That he had children he left behind?

Or... had he fabricated a completely fabricated past to win her over?

My heart began hammering against my ribs, an electric charge of adrenaline surging through my veins. I sat up straight, pulling the phone inches from my face.

"Hold on," I breathed. "Hold the phone."

I clicked directly on her Facebook profile, but it was locked down tight with privacy settings. I couldn’t see anything beyond her cover photo.

Without hesitating, I backed out of the app and opened Instagram. I typed her full name into the search bar. It didn’t take more than three seconds for her account to pop up.

Unlike Facebook, her Instagram was completely public.

My eyes widened as the grid loaded. "Oh... wow."

I began scrolling through her feed. It was a glittering archive of extreme luxury. Tropical vacations in private villas. Michelin-star dinners. Red-carpet charity events. Designer handbags, diamond jewelry, and elite gatherings. It was an aesthetic that belonged to a world I had only ever seen in magazines.

I kept scrolling down, tracking the years backward, my mind racing to connect the dots.

Then I reached her wedding photos. I paused, my finger hovering over the screen. The event was staggering. The floral arrangements alone looked like they cost more than a mortgage; the venue was a sprawling historical estate. There were hundreds of comments praising the happy couple.

I kept going. Down. Down. Down. Past the baby shower, past the honeymoon in Europe, past the engagement party.

I wasn’t even entirely sure what I was hunting for anymore. I just knew, with an instinct deep in my bones, that there was a crack in the foundation of his perfect life.

Then, deep down in her grid years in the past I hit an older post.

The caption immediately made my blood run cold.

WHAT THE HELL??
