Faking It With The Hockey Star
Chapter 153: Lies and Revelations
Harper’s POV
"First official date with this lovely, mysterious man. Praying this goes well."
I stared at the image. It was an old, unfiltered photo. She looked younger, her smile radiant. But it wasn’t her face that drew my eyes.
It was the man sitting across the candlelit table from her. Or rather... his hand resting on the table.
I pinched the screen and zoomed in as far as the resolution would allow.
My breath caught in my throat.
The watch a distinct, vintage silver timepiece with a scratched bezel. The thick fingers. The specific shape of the knuckles.
I knew those hands. I had seen them every single day of my childhood. I had watched those hands hold a newspaper over breakfast, sign school permission slips, drive our old family station wagon, and tap impatiently on the dinner table.
It was my father’s hand.
"No," I whispered, my voice trembling.
I zoomed in further, my eyes straining. My heart was pounding so hard I could hear it ringing in my ears. "That can’t be..."
But it was. There was no mistaking it.
I checked the timestamp on the post. Then I checked it again, making sure I wasn’t misreading the numbers.
My stomach completely dropped.
I hastily swiped out of Instagram, opening my calendar app and my photo archive, frantically searching through old family texts to confirm the exact timeline. I found the month and year my father packed his bags and walked out on my mother and us.
Then I swiped back to the Instagram post.
My eyes stretched wide with horror and disgust.
The date on her "first date" post was barely eleven days after he walked out of our front door.
I sat completely motionless on my bed, the room spinning around me.
"Wait," I muttered, my mind working at a terrifying speed.
Nobody meets a stranger, plans a romantic date, and establishes a relationship eleven days after abandoning a multi-year marriage and several children. It was mathematically impossible. Either they had met in secret right around the time he packed his bags... or they had been involved long before he ever left.
And if they had known each other before?
That meant my father hadn’t simply suffered a sudden mid-life crisis. He hadn’t woken up one morning overwhelmed by family responsibilities. He had been living a double life. He had been orchestrating his exit strategy while sitting at our dinner table.
I went back through her grid, scrolling meticulously through her oldest archived photos. I checked the dates. Then I started opening the comment sections and liked lists of her ancient posts.
I searched. And searched. And searched.
And then, there it was.
My father’s handle. Liking her photos. Leaving subtle, flirtatious emojis.
Six months before he walked out on us.
A gasp escaped my lips, my hand covering my mouth. "He was already there."
I scrolled through more posts from that era. There he was again. Liking her vacation pictures. Leaving heart emojis on her selfies. Following her every move while my mother was working extra shifts to keep food on our table.
I leaned back against my headboard, a cold, icy stillness washing over my heart.
"So you knew her," I whispered, the words heavy with years of buried pain. "You knew her the entire time."
It wasn’t a mystery anymore. The lingering ghost of why he had left the silent, painful self-doubt that had plagued my teenage years vanished in a single instant.
All those years, I had internalised the belief that my father abandoned us because we weren’t enough. Because we were a burden. Because he just couldn’t handle the pressure of fatherhood.
But the truth was far more sinister.
He had met someone else. Someone younger. Someone whose background opened doors to an entirely different social sphere.
Driven by my new discovery, I went back to Facebook and searched her maiden name. Her father’s profile popped up almost immediately. I clicked into his public information and searched his primary business entity.
My jaw dropped as the search results loaded.
It wasn’t some small local business. It was a massive, high-cap commercial construction enterprise with regional offices spanning over eight states. There were press releases detailing multi-million dollar government contracts, luxury skyscraper developments, corporate galas, and photos of her family rubbing shoulders with high-ranking politicians.
This family wasn’t just wealthy. They were elite. Old-money powerful. The kind of generational wealth that buys ultimate protection and social immunity.
I stared at the glowing laptop screen, the pieces of the puzzle locking together with terrifying, perfect clarity.
My father hadn’t just left us. He had discarded his past to execute a calculated social climb. He had traded his wife and children for a ticket into an empire.
I swallowed hard, a dark, bitter chuckle rising in my chest. "So that’s it."
The truth was grotesque, but oddly enough... knowing it hurt infinitely less than the ambiguity ever had. The mystery was gone. The monster had a face, a timeline, and a motive.
And more importantly... I now possessed an absolute weapon.
I sat back against my pillows, staring down at the Instagram profile of his new, unsuspecting wife. A slow, sharp, ruthless smile began to spread across my face.
"Okay," I whispered to the dark room.
If my father decided to drop his silence and come after me once I released the documentary... I wouldn’t be defensive. I wouldn’t be helpless.
If he threatened me because of what my mother revealed on camera... if he tried to use his new connections or legal threats to bully us into silence...
I would simply remind him of what I held in my hands.
His pristine, high-society wife had no idea her perfect husband was a fraud. She had no idea he had abandoned a previous wife and children to step into her family’s fortune. She had no idea their entire foundation was built on a lie.
I could destroy his curated world with a single message. I could send her the timeline. The dates. The overlapping likes. The proof of who he really was.
I wouldn’t even need to make a public scene. I could simply look him in the eyes and deliver a quiet, deadly promise:
Back off. Leave my mother and me alone forever. Or your new family finds out everything.
I snapped my laptop screen shut.
For the first time in months, the lingering fear that had haunted the back of my mind evaporated, replaced by a cold, calculating confidence.
"Yeah," I whispered, clutching my phone tight. "That works."
I unlocked my phone, taking one last look at his smug face on his profile picture.
Whatever game he was playing in the dark, I was ready. And if he thought he could intimidate me into stepping down?
He was in for a brutal surprise.
My smile widened, dangerous and unwavering.
"I’m actually waiting for you to try some shit this time."
