Kai continued cooking, knowing that Jean and Elara must be hungry. So Without taking his eyes off the wok, he said, "This is the part where you ask me whether I’m fine or not."

{I mean, you’re talking to me, and you sound fine, so I believe you are. Your wife and my dear niece are fine as well.}

By now, Kai had given up trying to correct the stubborn bastard, so he simply replied, "Yeah, they’re fine too. The Association rescued us before things could get any worse."

He chose to keep the actual details to himself. If he told Mark what had happened and how they had managed to walk away from that scene, his friend would undoubtedly bombard him with questions. Besides, Adam had specifically requested that he keep the details under wraps, even from his relatives.

So, Kai decided to play it safe. "We escaped and are somewhere safe now."

{Safe where? Did you check into a hotel? You can come to my place. It’s not very spacious, and the locality isn’t exactly great, but you definitely can stay till things cools down. I and Mia can manage on the couch if you are wondering.}

Kai let out a sigh as he tossed the vegetables in the wok. "What do you mean, unsafe locality? I used to live somewhere far worse than your place, and I haven’t changed much since then. Don’t be stupid."

{Right. Sorry... It’s just... Well, forget it. Where are you staying?}

A faint smile touched Kai’s lips as he stirred the vegetables. "Didn’t I tell you about the officer who’s been helping me for some time?" Kai hadn’t shared all the details since they never got the time but he has spoken about Adam to him during the car ride to Blue Mountain.

{Yeah... Oh, right! The suspicious guy. Did he help you this time too?}

Kai hummed in confirmation. "Yeah. He’s arranged accommodation for us until the situation at Blue Mountain improves." He had no idea how long that would take, though. Given the extent of the damage, there was a chance they might never be able to return to that community.

{Dude... Are you sure he doesn’t have those kinds of intentions toward you? He seems awfully forward with his advances.}

Kai nearly squeezed the sauce bottle into the wok at that remark.

"Cut the crap, Mark. Adam is simply investing in me because he understands my potential."

Shaking his head, Kai set the sauce bottle aside and opened the rice cooker, allowing the steam to escape so the rice could cool slightly.

{Well, be careful. And do let me know if you need any help. Should I bring you some food for today, at least?}

"Nah, I’m fine. I’ve already arranged something." Kai paused before changing the subject. "How’s Mia? Still on cloud nine after the vacation? She hasn’t spoken to me even once since you guys returned."

{Because you’ve forgotten about me!}

The booming voice from the other end made Kai pull the phone away from his ear for a moment.

He groaned. "Stop shouting, and tell me, how am I the one to blame when all you’ve done is forward me your ’moments’?"

(A/N: Moments refers to stories or highlights.)

{What? What was that? You got married and had a child, and you didn’t even invite me over for dinner. Who is the one to blame here, huh?}

Kai let out a long breath before answering the woman. "I’m not married yet, and all of this happened so suddenly. You should be asking whether I’m fine or if I need any help instead!"

There was a brief pause on the other end before Mia spoke again, her voice considerably calmer this time.

{You’re right... I’m sorry. I should have called you earlier.}

Kai was surprised by the sudden apology.

He had known Mia long before she married the fool who was probably sitting right beside her at that very moment. Given how stubborn she could be whenever she got into an argument with someone, his surprise was entirely justified.

After a moment, he replied gently, "It’s okay. I didn’t really face many problems, or I would have asked for your help."

Another brief silence followed before Mark spoke up.

{She’s all teary-eyed now.}

{Stop! Don’t tell him!}

Kai let out a sigh and shook his head, though a faint smile tugged at his lips. "Come on, don’t cry and feel guilty about it. Like I said, I’m a very fortunate man. And now that I’ve been blessed with two angels, things have turned out even better for me."

Not long ago, Kai had been dragging himself through life, somehow making it from one day to the next while hoping to find a respectable job that paid enough for him to afford better meals and live with a little dignity.

Yet, in such a short span of time, his circumstances had changed so dramatically that he could hardly believe it himself. He was now cooking a meal with the finest ingredients in a sprawling manor, the kind of place he had only ever seen on a screen.

So, yes, his life had changed for the better, and he had every reason to be grateful for it.

"I’m glad to hear that," Mia said warmly. "Now, introduce me to your wife and let me see my dearest niece already! Mark showed me her picture, and God, she is adorable!"

Kai grinned from ear to ear. "Isn’t she? You know, she just called me Papa."

{Did she? Did you record it? Would she call me Mimi too?}

"Mimi? You’d better get ready to be called Auntie now." Kai snickered. "No nicknames. You’ll have to accept what you are."

{A-Auntie? But I’m only twenty-four!}

Kai chuckled. "Doesn’t matter. You’re an aunt now. Make peace with it if you want to see my baby."

{Guh... For that adorable little fluff ball, though, I might be willing to tolerate being called that...}

{Okay, now go and look after them. If you keep indulging her, she won’t stop talking for another hour.}

Mark suddenly snatched the phone away and spoke before Mia could continue.

Kai chuckled. "Sure. I’ve just finished preparing the food, so I’ll call you guys later."

With that, he ended the call and began serving the meal he had prepared.

However, when he turned around with the plates in his hands, he was greeted by an adorable sight that completely froze him.

His two angels were already sitting at the dining table, one clutching her favorite toy while the other held a spoon, and both were staring intently at the food he was carrying.

The sight brought an even broader smile to Kai’s face.

"Sorry to keep you waiting. Now, let’s eat."
