Famous Among Top Surgeons in the 90s
Chapter 2593 That’s Right
Experimental animals are categorized as disposable and non-disposable. Disposable is easy to understand, such as during anatomy classes where the animal is brought to the operating table for dissection and observation, and after the dissection, the animal has no other purpose and is humanely disposed of. Most experiments use non-disposable experimental animals. After conducting experimental operations on such animals, they are placed back in a cage for continued feeding and observation. When the time comes, they are dissected to observe and derive experimental results, then humanely disposed of to provide data support for experimental papers.
A few students stood in front of the cage observing the mice bred by Student Duan, all speculating on what kind of experiment Student Duan was conducting.
"Seems like there’s nothing unusual," Student Wei said, furrowing his brow.
Clearly, Student Wei’s observational skill is based on impressionism, believing that as long as the mouse is alive and able to move, it is considered normal.
"How do you use your eyes?" Pan Shihua couldn’t help but comment on his careless roommate, "Didn’t you see the suture lines on their abdominal surgery incisions?"
"Abdominal surgery? Isn’t it cardiac surgery? Isn’t he in cardiothoracic surgery?" Student Wei asked curiously.
"Is it researching abdominal aortic aneurysms?" Dai Nanhui pondered.
"Abdominal ectopic heart transplantation."
This final statement came from Student Xie.
The other students looked at her, then at Student Duan’s expression: it seemed indeed correct.
What is abdominal ectopic heart transplantation? Previously we discussed ectopic heart transplantation in heart transplants, which contrasts with orthotopic heart transplantation. Simply repeating: the recipient’s original heart is not removed, and another heart is installed in a different location within the recipient’s body. Adding the term abdominal before ectopic heart transplantation indicates that the new heart is installed in the recipient’s abdominal cavity.
In experimental animal models, ectopic heart transplantation can be in any location that experimental personnel can think of, apart from the abdominal cavity, other common ectopic transplantation sites include the neck, and rarely, the groin area.
The abdominal cavity is the most common, being the origin of the ectopic heart transplantation experiment, initially using rats as experimental animals. Later it gradually developed to involve mice and rabbits among other experimental animals. Now Student Duan is working with mice and rabbits, it seems they have research funding confidence to further explore the experiment.
The heart transplantation experiments conducted on experimental animals are meant to serve human medicine. Human medical heart transplantation involves donor and recipient of the same species but with different genotypes. Experimental animals correspondingly are the same, you should select same species different genotype donor and recipient. Seeing this, it’s easy to understand what the experiment mainly researches: it could simply research the surgical risks or study the pathologic changes post-transplantation mainly focused on the occurrence mechanisms of various post-surgery complications and solutions.
"Isn’t Teacher Cao uninterested in heart transplantation? Are you following him to conduct heart transplant research?" A few students were slightly puzzled upon hearing Student Duan’s answer. Student Duan follows Immortal Brother, yet researches something Immortal Brother isn’t interested in, isn’t he a new traitor? Perhaps he should secretly be working with Doctor Mu Yongxian next door who is most interested in heart transplantation.
Faced with others’ doubts, Duan Sanbao, Yuanyuan’s eyes widened: What?
"They aren’t doing heart transplant experiments either." Duan Sanbao, deeply incredulous, revealed the research secrets of another big shot researcher.
