Chapter 577: The Change From The Ordinary

The moment Sebastian stepped into the room, his eyes immediately searched for his wife. The grave expression on Gilbert’s face had made his heart drop with anxiety. Did something go wrong? he thought, his whole body tensing like a tightly drawn wire.

"What happened?!" he demanded, rushing toward the delivery bed where Viola lay unconscious, her face pale and her dark hair damp with sweat. An omega assistant healer stood beside her, wiping sweat off her forehead, while another adjusted the blanket covering her body.

"Sunshine?" He reached for her hand, his heart pounding as he searched her face for any sign that she was all right. "What happened to her?"

"Supreme Alpha, your wife is stable. She’s exhausted from the delivery and needs to rest," Gilbert assured him, coming to stand next to the Supreme Alpha and tucking his hands into his blue hospital coat, as he knew Sebastian wouldn’t like the next piece of news, just like any father wouldn’t like to hear, especially werewolves.

Sebastian looked at him sharply. "Then why the fuck do you look like someone just died? What’s gotten into you?"

Gilbert hesitated before answering, and Sebastian’s patience began to wear thin. He had spent nearly five hours outside that room, imagining every terrible thing that could happen to the woman he loved. He wasn’t going to endure another second of uncertainty.

"Where are my babies? Are they all right?"

Two omegas stood near the other side of the room, each holding a tiny bundle wrapped in soft blankets. Sebastian hadn’t even noticed them when he entered, too focused on Viola to pay attention to anything else. But now that he saw them, both little hands sticking out of their wrappings as they made tiny baby sounds, he felt his body loosen from the tension that had tightened inside him.

His gaze lingered on them. The twins were here and healthy, so what was wrong with Gilbert, and what was he trying to achieve by giving him a heart attack? Sebastian thought, turning to glare at the doctor and contemplating replacing him. However, he was certain he couldn’t trust anyone with his wife except her cousin.

He narrowed his eyes as he noticed the way the omegas were looking at Gilbert, their expressions far from the happiness he had expected to see after the birth of the next generation of Silver. That was when he realized there was still something wrong.

"What’s wrong?" he asked again, his voice dropping dangerously low. "Why is everyone looking at me like that?"

Gilbert drew a breath.

"Supreme Alpha, your wife didn’t give birth to twins."

Sebastian stared at him and then at the two babies in the omegas’ arms.

"What?"

"She gave birth to triplets. Two girls and a boy."

For several seconds, Sebastian could only look at him, his mind struggling to catch up with what he had just heard. Two girls and a boy?

"Triplets?" he repeated, his gaze darting toward the two tiny bundles. This had never happened before in Silver. It was always two boys who came first to carry on the curse and the bloodline. No Luna had ever given birth to two girls, for females don’t rule a pack, Alpha bloodline or not, and only males were accepted. But that wasn’t what troubled Sebastian. In fact, that problem was far from his mind, knowing it had been a safe delivery. He looked around for the third omega who might be holding the third child.

"Where’s the third baby?"

The question seemed to weigh heavily on Gilbert, whose expression grew even more solemn.

"Your two daughters are doing well. Their development appears to have followed the mermaid side of their heritage, which allowed them to be ready for birth earlier than expected."

Sebastian’s eyes moved between the two babies, barely able to comprehend that he had three children instead of the two he and Viola had been expecting and everyone in Silver had anticipated.

"But your son..." Gilbert paused, choosing his words carefully. "His development appears to have followed the werewolf side of his heritage. He wasn’t ready to be born yet, and his body hasn’t finished developing."

Sebastian’s face went blank at the news, and he realized what had brought on that grave expression. The knot returned to his chest at the thought that they might have lost the son.

"Where is he?" he asked, his voice suddenly strained.

"We’ve taken him to the special care unit. He needs immediate attention because he’s severely premature. The healers are working to support his breathing and keep him stable while we monitor his development."

For a moment, Sebastian couldn’t hear anything else.

He had spent months imagining the day his pups would arrive, never once considering that he might have three children instead of two and such complications would arise.

The pup was fighting for his life, and his Viola would be worried sick once she woke up to the news.

"Will he survive?" he asked, afraid to hear a bad news.

Gilbert didn’t answer immediately, and that silence frightened Sebastian more than anything he had said so far.

"We’re doing everything we can, Supreme Alpha. It’s too early to make any promises."

Sebastian’s jaw tightened as he looked toward the door, already wanting to rush out to check for himself. But then he glanced back at Viola, who remained unconscious on the bed.

"Can you keep this between us for now and not let the pack know the gender of the babies yet?" He asked, turning away from his sleeping wife to the doctor, who was looking at him with understanding.

"I will try my best to keep everything quiet, but you know we can’t keep it in for long and will have to announce it." Gilbert said, and Sebastian nodded his head.

"I know, but until the boy is healthy and my wife is back on her feet, let’s keep it silent." Sebastian mused.

Having two daughters when they had expected boys was going to stir up the pack, especially when they heard that the boy wasn’t healthy yet. Sebastian didn’t have the energy to deal with his people while worrying about his family at the same time. They already had so much on their plates, and he didn’t want to add the narrow-mindedness of his people on top of it.

"I will try my best, Supreme Alpha."
