Fated: The Alpha's Unwanted Luna
Chapter 579: The Other Baby
Sebastian stepped closer, staring at the little body. The baby was so small that Sebastian could hardly believe he had been growing inside Viola just months ago. His tiny chest rose and fell with shallow breaths, and a small monitor beside him displayed his heartbeat.
Sebastian had never imagined his first meeting with his son would be like this. The tiny baby looked nothing like the newborns he had seen, his fragile little body so small that he looked more like an alien than a baby.
"He is so small." he said quietly, unable to take his eyes off the baby, who hadn’t even developed hair on his head. "He’s supposed to be a werewolf. Shouldn’t he be stronger than this?"
"His strength isn’t the problem, Supreme Alpha. He’s simply not finished developing yet," Gilbert explained, standing beside him. "His lungs and other organs need more time to mature, which is why we’ve placed him here, where we can monitor him closely and support his breathing."
Sebastian’s jaw tightened as he looked at his baby through the transparent walls of the incubator.
"Will he be all right like this?"
Gilbert let out a heavy sigh before answering.
"I wish I could give you a definite answer, but this is the first premature baby born in the Supreme Alpha’s generation. We’ve never encountered a situation like this before, so we don’t know how his early birth will affect his growth or development. We need to monitor him closely and see how his body responds as he grows."
Sebastian turned to look at him, his brows furrowing as Gilbert’s words reminded him of the time his sister had been shot and the doctor had said something similar.
’We need to keep her under observation and monitor her wolf development as she grows.’
Gilbert continued, "His sisters were ready to be born, but his development wasn’t complete when the girls triggered the delivery. Now, we have to help him through the stages of growth he hasn’t finished."
Sebastian looked back at the incubator, his throat tightening with uncertainty as he spoke to the baby in the glass.
"You’re a Kade," he whispered. "You hear me, little one? You’re my son. You’re supposed to be giving your father a hard time, not scaring the life out of him like this."
The baby remained asleep, his tiny chest continuing to rise and fall. Though Sebastian wasn’t that good with babies, he had raised one before, and he used to like talking to her as though she could understand while she laughed, revealing her baby teeth.
The thought made him feel that prick return to his heart, along with the fear of what if he lost this one too. What if they lost him? Though he was still a baby they hadn’t grown attached to yet, he was still theirs, and it touched a spot in him, for looking at him already filled him with some sort of possessiveness.
"Your mother will be waiting for you. Your sisters are waiting for you too, even if they don’t know it yet." His voice dropped to a whisper. "So you fight, little one. You grow strong enough to come home with us when we leave here."
He remained there for a while, watching his son’s small chest rise and fall, before finally turning to Gilbert.
"Whatever he needs, give it to him. Bring in the best healers you can find. I don’t care what it costs or how far you have to go. The baby is going to get every chance he deserves." He said, and when Gilbert nodded in affirmation, Sebastian continued.
"I need your help with something right now. We don’t have any clothes ready for the babies at home, and I can’t send anyone to get them, because once it is known that the clothes are for girls, it will spread and disrupt my wife’s peace—"
"I understand, don’t worry. I know just who to send to do that errand and get the things the babies will need ready at home." Gilbert assured him, already taking up the position of the godfather he intended to be to his cousin’s babies and keeping everything quiet until the little one here was strong enough.
Sebastian looked at the baby one last time and then said, "I’ll send my best men to stand guard outside the door, I don’t feel comfortable leaving him alone in there." Saying that, he left, already contacting his men, while Gilbert stayed to monitor the baby one last time before he also left.
With people already taking care of the other babies and the mother, the doctor didn’t return to the new room Viola had been moved to. Instead, he went to where Sebastian’s family was and said,
"Miss Serrano, could you come here a second." He called to her, and she turned to him from where she was sitting, looking as though she would rather remain there than go to him.
In the end, when she realized only he could answer her questions about Viola’s condition, she excused herself from Eleanor, who didn’t look pleased that she was being kept in the dark about the situation.
Once Laila came to him, her face passive, she asked, "Is there something wrong with the Luna?" There was concern showing in her emerald eyes, but she tried to keep it hidden from him.
"Let’s talk in my office," he said, and then he placed his hand on the small of her back, and Laila immediately stepped away from his touch as though it had burned her.
"You don’t have to touch me, Rodrigo." She grumbled, walking ahead of him, and Gilbert watched her, her hips swaying elegantly along with her high heels that clicked against the floor. He shook his head in amusement as he followed her.
She arrived at his office before him, perching her hip against his glass desk and looking at him, plain worry on her face now, as she couldn’t hide it.
