Fated: The Alpha's Unwanted Luna

Chapter 589: Speak outside

On the care unit floor, Alex followed his brother and his mate, catching up with them at the entrance. Sebastian didn’t bother asking him to go back. Instead, he entered the special password he had created for the door, which only he and the doctors knew, ensuring that access to the unit remained restricted for security reasons.

They entered the room, and Alex wordlessly followed them to where the baby lay inside the glass incubator. Sebastian gently set his wife on her feet, and she walked towards it, her eyes fixed on the baby within, already trembling with emotion.

Viola stopped in front of the incubator, staring at the tiny baby lying inside. For a moment, she struggled to reconcile the little body before her with the babies she had held and fed. When they had said he was premature, she hadn’t expected him to be so tiny that he barely looked like a baby. The sight frightened her to the core.

"Oh my, he looks smaller than I thought he would." She said quietly, looking back at Sebastian.

Sebastian moved closer, resting a hand on her back. "That’s why I didn’t want you to see him yet."

Viola turned back to the baby, realizing that her being half mermaid might have brought this upon him. She couldn’t help worrying that being a half-breed might affect something else in their children as they grew. However, right now, her greatest concern was their son. She was terrified by the thought that he might not survive, her heart aching for him.

"Oh, my baby..." she whispered huskily.

Viola pressed her lips together. She wanted to hold her son, even if only for a moment, but she feared that wouldn’t be possible anytime soon, not with him in this condition.

"Isn’t there a way we could hasten his growth?" she asked without looking away from him. They weren’t human, and her husband’s bloodline came from werewolves with powers her babies must have inherited. Viola had heard stories of ancient werewolf witches who didn’t rely on modern medicine but could work miracles, even on the sick and on babies on the verge of death. She wasn’t sure if it was true, though.

She turned to Sebastian, who replied, "I’ll see what I can find out."

Alex, who had been standing a short distance behind them, watched them. His eyes settled on his nephew, and he couldn’t help feeling sorry for the tiny baby. For a brief moment, he wondered what it would have been like if he had a child of his own, but the memory of his late wife’s infidelity quickly put an end to that thought. He sighed quietly, then wondered why only one baby was in the room and where the other was. Should he even offer his congratulations when the child was in such a condition?

He glanced at Sebastian, noticing how tightly his brother’s jaw was set as he looked thoughtful. "Can I speak to you outside for a moment?" he asked quietly.

Sebastian looked at him, then at Viola. "Stay here with him for a minute. I’ll be right back."

Viola nodded without turning around.

Sebastian followed Alex outside the unit. "What is it?"

"What happened?" Alex asked, not beating around the bush with his twin after seeing the baby in the room.

Sebastian’s expression barely changed. "We had triplets, two girls and the boy, and the baby boy has a low chance of surviving, as you can see in there."

Alex glanced towards the door and then back at his brother, realizing why Sebastian hadn’t told anyone about the babies yet. He was stunned by the unexpected turn of events.

"That’s a big secret to keep, and we can’t hide it for long. Everyone is bound to find out eventually."

"I know, but I trust they won’t find out from you," Sebastian said, looking into his brother’s identical eyes.

"You know I won’t tell anyone," Alex assured him. "Not if my life depends on it. Silver Pack members can be brutal when it comes to someone who doesn’t come from among us, especially if she challenges their traditions. I’ll let you figure out how to handle them."

No matter their differences, Alex still cared about his brother and would stand by him, just as Sebastian had stood by him before things went wrong between them.

"I appreciate that," Sebastian said, his sincerity evident in his tone this time.

Alex smiled. "So, how are the girls? What do they look like?" he asked curiously, still finding it hard to believe that his brother was now a father to girls. After they had raised their younger sister, sometimes taking turns with the responsibility, Sebastian had once said he would never want daughters because they took more effort to raise. Who would have thought he would end up with two of them?

At the question about his daughters, Sebastian’s eyes, which had been so naturally hard moments earlier, softened with tenderness.

"Beautiful. Lovely. Words can’t describe how they look or how they make me feel, but you can take a look at them if you want to." He offered the invitation, something he had never done before with the brother he had been at odds with.

Alex’s heart throbbed with joy at the invitation that was extended to him. "I will, after I take Grandma home. I can’t miss seeing the girls who suddenly softened my brother," Alex said. Then his expression turned solemn, as though he had remembered something.

"I wanted to report something to you, but seeing what you’re dealing with, I’m no longer sure I should tell you and worry you even more."

"What is it?" Sebastian asked, narrowing his eyes at his brother. All traces of humor had vanished from his face at Alex’s tone.

Alex contemplated only for a moment before he decided to tell the Supreme Alpha, as he deserved to know.

"When you dropped me off after we visited the sea, I was taking a walk by myself to clear my mind. I thought I heard an explosion coming from the water, so I ran back. When I got there, I found that a large section of the frozen surface had been torn apart. There were marks in the snow that looked like someone had been dragged out of the water. I followed them to the trees, where they stopped. Something had come out of the water, but it must have been in a weakened state."
