Chapter 460: 460-Time To Reveal Our Affair

Verity:

The moment Theodore said that and avoided my gaze, an awful feeling settled in the pit of my stomach.

I turned toward Bruno, wanting to make sure my mind wasn’t playing tricks on me and that these suspicions weren’t simply the result of my wolf constantly pushing me in that direction.

"Have you checked the security cameras? I mean, maybe he came back to the office last night after I left," I asked, trying to sound nonchalant.

What I really wanted to know was whether someone had caught Ragnar and me together.

"That’s the thing. The footage was deleted."

The moment Bruno said that, my head snapped toward Theodore.

Suddenly, everything made sense.

Theodore knew.

Oh, fuck. He must have come here and seen us together.

Maybe he even confronted Ragnar about it after Ragnar dropped me home.

A dozen possibilities raced through my mind, but every time I tried to meet Theodore’s eyes, he looked away, almost as though he couldn’t bear to face me.

"Okay, Bruno, would you please..." I paused, swallowing the lump in my throat. "Would you please go and speak with Jaguar and ask him to look for his brother? I just need a moment."

I couldn’t understand why I was reacting this way.

In a sense, this was actually a good thing.

Whatever my wolf had been pushing me to do had already happened, and the best part was that I wouldn’t even have to take the blame for it.

So why was I feeling so anxious?

Maybe because I had no idea where Ragnar was.

"And why do you care where the fuck he is?" my wolf snapped.

"I don’t," I shot back. "It’s just that, like you said, we’re supposed to punish him in the worst possible way. Him running away isn’t going to accomplish anything."

Even as I said it with complete conviction, the words sounded like a lie.

"Okay, fine," Bruno agreed before walking away to speak with Jaguar.

I straightened my spine and forced myself to meet Theodore’s gaze.

"I think we need to talk about last night."

The words had barely left my mouth when his shoulders slumped.

"Yeah, I think that would be best," he replied, his voice cracking slightly.

Once Bruno had gone to find Jaguar, I followed Theodore into his office.

He closed the door behind us while I moved toward the side of his desk and stood there, folding my arms loosely in front of my body and rubbing my hands against my forearms in an attempt to calm my nerves.

"I need this out of my chest so bad," Theodore muttered, avoiding my eyes.

I could already tell something terrible was going to happen today.

I mean, it was inevitable, but I didn’t know why I had convinced myself that I could somehow delay it.

"Yesterday, when Jaguar and I left for home, we couldn’t stop thinking about you." It was strange because he kept mentioning his brother, too. "Then, while we were talking about you, we decided we wanted to spend some time with you."

My heart began to race as I listened to him, growing more anxious with every word that left his mouth.

"So we decided to visit you at the office," he continued, tapping his fingertips against the table while keeping his other hand tucked into his pants pocket.

That was all he needed to say for me to close my eyes and draw a deep breath.

I had suspected something was wrong from the way he had been behaving, but a part of me had desperately hoped I was mistaken.

Now, however, I couldn’t shake the feeling that they had come to the office and caught us together.

"Verity, what started as a spontaneous plan to spend time with you ended in embarrassment and pain." He paused, swallowing hard before continuing. "And I’m not going to blame you for it. I won’t. Maybe it was just... I don’t know, man."

He struggled to find the right words, but whatever restraint he had been holding on to finally snapped.

"But I do blame you!" he burst out, lifting his gaze to mine, his eyes reddening. "You need to understand that it’s not easy for me to talk about what I saw."

He broke eye contact again, running his fingers through his hair as though he couldn’t bring himself to finish the thought.

By then, I knew they had seen us together.

I needed to do some damage control before things got completely out of hand, and the only way to do that was to come clean.

"I wanted to talk to you about it," I admitted.

His eyes immediately shot up to mine, and he stared at me in disbelief.

"You knew?" he asked, sounding almost stunned.

"I had a feeling," I mumbled, clenching my fists together.

"Oh." He nodded slowly, his expression tightening. "The heartache from the mate bond."

He gave another small nod, making me bite down on my bottom lip.

I had completely forgotten about that.

I thought that until we marked and accepted each other, we wouldn’t be able to feel the heartbreak of being cheated on through the mate bond.

Perhaps we could sense a little pain, but how was I supposed to know?

I had been so busy making out with his brother, my heart pounding so wildly that I barely registered anything else.

It would have been a miracle if I had noticed any pain at all.

"Why didn’t you come to me first thing this morning?" he asked, watching me closely.

"Because..." I hesitated, burying my face in my hands. "Because I was embarrassed."

As soon as the words left my mouth, I lifted my head and found him still staring at me.

"We didn’t plan for any of this, okay? It just happened. We were arguing a lot, and then Ragnar came to the office, and..."

I trailed off when my wolf began pestering me again.

’You better not take all the blame yourself. This is your chance to turn the brothers against each other.’
