First Immortal of the Sword
Chapter 3065 - The Mysterious Man Making Amends
A day had passed since Su Yi entered the Sea of Fate, two River Ancestors by his side. They’d encountered considerable danger, but they’d resolved it all with ease.
But this was the first time the Cauldron of Fate had reacted to anything.
Su Yi silently came to a halt, calmed his heart, and sensed the changes. River Ancestors Luo Yu and Hu Chan stood to his sides, ready to defend him if need be.
The surface of the Cauldron of Fate was carved with numerous strange, contorted markings. These were an ancient script of the Primordial Era.
As they shifted, the words on the cauldron’s surface seemed to come to life, emanating with a wispy rain of silver light.
Within the Cauldron of Fate, there was an ancient seal. It contained an ancient battlefield and a dried-up well.
When the Cauldron of Fate shifted, a voice emanated from the well’s depths, passing through the seal to resonate with Su Yi’s divine sense.
“Be careful, Senior. Fate Tribulation Light will appear soon!”
The voice was low and hoarse, tinged with surprise, yet clearly eager to please.
Su Yi blinked. Senior?
He quickly understood. That must be the voice of the mysterious person at the bottom of the well, the ‘pitiful worm in a cage’ who suffered badly at the hands of my first incarnation’s heart devil. He must have mistaken me for my first incarnation’s heart devil!
Su Yi’s eyes narrowed, and he said with the heart devil’s voice, “So, you’re finally willing to speak, you pitiful worm.”
He didn’t ask about the Fate Tribulation Light, nor did he ask how the mysterious man in the well had detected his divine sense.
Asking these questions risked letting something slip. The mysterious man might well figure out who he really was.
Just as he thought, the mysterious man responded hurriedly, “Don’t misunderstand, Senior. I sensed something the moment you entered the Sea of Fate, but I wasn’t sure what you were after, so I dared not interrupt you just to greet you.”
He paused, then continued, “Now, the Cauldron of Fate has shifted because it’s sensed the impending Fate Tribulation Light. I am well aware of your strength, Senior. You have nothing to fear from the Fate Tribulation Light, but I’d hate for it to trouble you, so I took it upon myself to warn you. Please forgive me if I disturbed you!”
He spoke with the utmost reverence and a hint of unease.
This answer resolved several of Su Yi’s doubts.
First, the mysterious man in the well had known that he was in the Sea of Fate this entire time. Second, the Cauldron of Fate was shifting in response to the Fate Tribulation Light!
Su Yi pondered briefly, then snorted coldly and jeered, “You aren’t being honest with me. You’re just worried that I’ll run into Fate Tribulation Light and blame you for failing to warn me. You’re just worried I’ll punish you again, aren’t you?”
Had his first incarnation’s heart devil been here, he’d have surely applauded. Su Yi’s grasp of his mannerisms and tone had reached the pinnacle of perfection. There were no detectable flaws whatsoever.
The mysterious voice in the well was obviously a bit frantic. He said hurriedly, “Please don’t be angry, Senior. I humbly request an opportunity to make amends!”
Su Yi’s heart stirred. The mysterious voice had told him that the Eternal Throne wasn’t the only treasure waiting in the Sea of Fate. The Laws of Lifelessness and the Compass of Fate were hidden there, too.
And the mysterious man knew where to find them!
He was now humbly expressing his desire to make amends. This was unquestionably an opportunity.
But after pondering briefly, Su Yi resisted the urge and said coldly, “Want to make amends? What right does a pitiful worm trapped at the bottom of a well have to serve me? Take some time to self-reflect first!”
With that, he withdrew his divine sense.
It wasn’t that he didn’t trust the mysterious man, but rather that he was far too dangerous!
His first incarnation’s heart devil had told him that the “pitiful worm” was an expert who’d proven his Dao and sloughed off the shackles of Destiny during the early days of the Primordial era.
Su Yi thus had no choice but to proceed with the utmost caution.
If he really gave the trapped expert a chance to make amends, it might well provoke his suspicions. After all, his first incarnation’s heart devil was too proud and arrogant to agree to anything so casually.
Still, this exchange had given Su Yi several ideas.
Meanwhile, a sigh resounded within the dried-up well at the center of the sealed ancient battlefield.
The bottom of the well was pitch black and full of strange, shifting black smoke flickering with arcs of crimson lightning.
A figure sat slumped at the bottom of the well. He was stick thin, and he emanated such dense death qi that it almost seemed as if he were made of rotten wood.
The figure’s hair and beard were scraggly, disheveled, and blood-red chains of the Laws bound him thoroughly, each as thick as a thumb. All of them flashed with unearthly Dao Markings, and together, they held him fast.
Only one hand had managed to break free, but it had lost all of its flesh and blood in the process. All that remained of it was bone!
This was the one the heart devil called “pitiful worm.” He was an expert who’d broken the shackles of Eternity during the earliest days of the Primordial Era!
He’d been imprisoned at the bottom of the well for countless years, struggling with all his might. He’d seized the opportunity he’d needed, and he’d been on the verge of success when he ran into the heart devil.
The heart devil then kicked him back into the well’s depths, putting countless years of effort and sacrifice to waste!
It was easy to imagine how frustrated he was. It had driven him to the brink of madness.
But after taking some time to clear his head and think, he accepted the reality of the situation and decided to try something else. He’d take on the humble bearing of a prisoner, then lower his head to the very supreme being who’d destroyed his hopes.
All he wanted in exchange was a chance at freedom.
When Su Yi entered the Sea of Fate, he thought the opportunity he’d been waiting for had finally arrived.
Unfortunately, Su Yi hadn’t given him the opportunity!
The mysterious man at the bottom of the well was overcome with disappointment.
Don’t tell me I wasn’t humble enough? Or should I have been more reverent? The mysterious man furrowed his brow, let out a deep sigh, and murmured, But then, it makes sense. Given his extraordinary abilities, he’s surely a top expert even on the Far Shore. Why would he concern himself with... a pitiful worm like me?
The light in the man’s eyes dimmed.
He’d once stood at the pinnacle of the heavens, but the passage of time had worn away his past glories.
He really was now just a pitiful worm trapped in a well. All he could do was sigh over his own misfortune!
No, that’s not right. This is the Sea of Fate. I once fought here. It was here that I slaughtered countless foes and ruled over all others! And that supreme being surely came here for the secrets of the Sea of Fate!
And I know all of those secrets!
The mysterious figure was suddenly excited. This is the price I must pay. So long as I take the initiative to lower my head and reveal everything to that supreme being, I... might well have a chance! Even if I can’t break free, it’s enough if I earn some sympathy and recognition!
If I manage to win his appreciation, even if it’s just a little, I’ll be one step closer to escaping confinement!
The mysterious man in the well perked up.
He was someone who’d proven his Dao during the Primordial Era, breaking the fetters of Eternity. Even confined, he’d clung to life for countless years.
His willpower was naturally firm beyond imagination. So long as he drew breath, he’d try every means at his disposal.
Even if his hopes were fleeting, he wouldn’t give up!
......
The Sea of Fate.
“Your Excellency, did something happen?”
When River Ancestor Hu Chan saw Su Yi freeze in place, then sink into silence, he couldn’t help but feel a bit confused.
He was built like a miniature mountain, and he stood behind Su Yi like a barrier, but he was under immense pressure. When he spoke, it was with the utmost mildness and reverence. The sight of his massive frame bent low at the waist was rather absurd.
“Something happened, yes,” said Su Yi. He then told them about the imminent Fate Tribulation Light.
Both River Ancestors gasped.
“I know about Fate Tribulation Light. It’s utterly terrifying. When it erupts, it transforms into a windstorm and sweeps an entire stretch of ocean. Wherever it goes, time and space are ripped asunder, and every living thing in its path is instantly reduced to ash,” said River Ancestor Luo Yu, his expression grave. “Many of the recent developments in the Sea of Fate are connected to the frequent eruptions of Fate Tribulation Light!”
He then glanced at the Cauldron of Fate in astonishment. That treasure can actually sense Fate Tribulation Light before it hits?
“Your Excellency, should we leave immediately?” asked River Ancestor Hu Chan grimly.
Fate Tribulation Light was extraordinarily dangerous. Even River Ancestors like them dreaded it.
Everyone knew that there was an Eternal Throne lost somewhere in the Sea of Fate, so why hadn’t anyone found it yet?
Simple. The Sea of Fate was just too terrifying and taboo. Not even River Ancestors and Heavenly Sovereigns dared risk themselves there!
“This way,” said Su Yi, instantly reaching a decision.
If there was Fate Tribulation Light on the road ahead, he’d just pick a different direction.
As they moved, Su Yi noticed the Cauldron of Fate’s movements fading away.
That strongly suggested that they’d left the soon-to-be affected stretch of ocean.
He’d only just thought this when he and the River Ancestors’ hearts quivered. Both of them gazed into the distance.
Dense layers of tribulation clouds gathered beneath the dome of heaven, then suddenly split, opening a massive rift.
Endless dazzling tribulation light came pouring down, like the river of heaven bursting through a dam and pouring onto the world below.
Kaboom!
A downpour of tribulation light descended over the entire stretch of ocean. Its waters boiled and churned, stirring up massive waves.
The entire stretch of ocean was instantly enveloped. The sky tore and split, like a vision of pure chaos and destruction.
It was just too terrifying. Even just gazing upon it from afar was enough to send chills through the River Ancestors’ hearts. Both watched on solemnly.
This was true Fate Tribulation Light!
It was as boundlessly vast as the river of stars bursting through a dam. It overturned the firmament and boiled the ocean. Wherever the light went, time and space split. All was destroyed, and everything vanished.
“If we’d left even just a little later, I’m afraid...” River Ancestor Hu Chan gulped with great difficulty, his heart full of lingering terror.
The Fate Tribulation Light had erupted exactly where they’d been standing moments prior!
