First Immortal of the Sword

Chapter 3096 - The Man in the Coffin

  • Next Chapter

The dense tribulation clouds reached the surface of the ocean. They were like a barrier blocking the path ahead.

The clouds weren’t static. They were shifting slowly, the depths of the tribulation clouds flashing intermittently with electricity.

The lightning was silent and traceless. It came and went without revealing any sign of its presence.

Even gazing upon it from afar, Su Yi felt intense pressure bearing down on him. Even his vital energy circulation showed signs of stagnation!

Su Yi couldn’t help but be impressed. This really is a place so dangerous that not even Heavenly Sovereigns dare venture here lightly. It’s as sinister as can be.

He pondered briefly, then followed True Progenitor Shi Yin’s instructions and summoned the Cauldron of Fate.

He then took out the Medallion of Past Karma, but just as he was about to use its power to direct the Cauldron of Fate, something unexpected happened.

The depths of the dense layer of tribulation clouds shook, and countless streaks of stingingly bright, electric tribulation light surged forth.

The silence enshrouding the area broke, and a series of impacts rang out, like the beating of a divine drum.

The Cauldron of Fate shook violently, as if an invisible power were trying to yank it out of Su Yi’s grasp!

Su Yi used the Medallion of Past Karma to suppress it. At least, he tried to. Much to his surprise, the medallion was forced back. It couldn’t suppress the cauldron’s strange movements at all.

Su Yi’s pupils constricted. He could clearly sense an invisible power seizing the Cauldron of Fate. It was trying to steal it!

Worse, with his current strength, there was no way he could stop it. Not by himself.

There was no time to give the matter any further thought. Su Yi took out the Book of Destiny and tried to put the Cauldron of Fate inside for safekeeping.

Boom!

Deep within the tribulation clouds, dazzling tribulation light shot forth, tearing through time and space. It came crashing down on them.

Su Yi instantly sensed a potentially lethal threat bearing down on him.

A certain treasure in his sleeves suddenly shook, like an arrow eager to be unleashed. It seemed intent on escaping.

Su Yi’s eyebrows rose. Without the slightest hesitation, he powered the Book of Destiny and summoned the Sword of the Nine Hells.

Weng!

An inscrutable rain of light flowed over the Book of Destiny, raising a boundless, ethereal abyss. It blanketed the sky and blotted out the sun.

This was the Abyss of Ceaseless Destiny!

And as soon as Sword of the Nine Hells appeared, its supreme sword force suppressed the Cauldron of Fate’s violent struggles.

Boom!

An unbelievable scene followed. The dazzling tribulation light blasting toward Su Yi retreated as if terrified, returning to the depths of the tribulation clouds. It was gone in a flash.

Within Su Yi's sleeves, that object had only just emerged when it slipped back into the Abyss of Ceaseless Destiny.

This entire sequence of events happened in a flash, so quick that it seemed unbelievable.

Su Yi dared say with certainty that if not for the Sword of the Nine Hells, the Cauldron of Fate would have been taken away.

Similarly, if not for the Book of Destiny, the object hidden in his sleeves would have fled by now!

It all happened far too quickly. When the dust settled and everything was back to normal, Su Yi couldn’t help but sigh in relief.

But then, his brow furrowed. He put away the Cauldron of Fate followed by the Sword of the Nine Hells.

Nothing else unexpected happened in the dense layer of tribulation clouds. It was only after confirming this that Su Yi used the Book of Destiny and took out the treasure that had tried to flee.

It was the dilapidated jade box, the strange object Su Yi had acquired earlier in the Sea of Fate. According to Heavenly Sovereign Qingyi, it was a Cauldron for the Living, and it had been lost to the depths in the early days of the Primordial Era.

It most likely contained a living Heavenly Sovereign, or perhaps, someone a Heavenly Sovereign cared deeply about!

Earlier, the Cauldron for the Living had obviously sensed a threat too. That was why it had attempted to flee.

Fortunately, I sealed the coffin in the world in my sleeves and made arrangements, just in case. Otherwise, I’d have been caught off guard, thought Su Yi.

In a roundabout way, he had True Progenitor Shi Yin to thank for his precautions. If not for his first incarnation’s heart devil, Su Yi would have suffered badly at True Progenitor Shi Yin’s hands while attempting to investigate the Cauldron of Fate.

After this close call, Su Yi dared not be so careless with the Cauldron for the Living. He’d been on guard right from the start.

And everything that had just happened proved he’d been right to be on guard!

“Tell me, just who are you?” asked Su Yi. He gazed down at the jade box, his hands enveloped in the power of the Book of Destiny. If the Coffin for the Living made any strange movements, he’d suppress it in the Book of Destiny immediately.

The coffin didn’t move or react in any way. When Su Yi saw this, he couldn’t be bothered to ask any further questions.

He gazed into the distance. After everything that had just happened, the depths of the tribulation clouds had shifted strangely. It was indistinct, but he caught the outline of a little boat deep within the clouds.

The Untethered Boat!

Su Yi was certain that this was the very same boat that True Progenitor Shi Yin saw as a taboo. It wasn’t just him, either. Even Dao Ancestors knew it was dangerous!

They said that those who stepped onto the deck could reach the Source of the River of Destiny.

However, True Progenitor Shi Yin had watched with his own eyes as someone stepped onto the boat, only to vanish. When they returned, they died suddenly and inexplicably!

It was for this reason that when an opportunity to board the Untethered Boat presented itself, True Progenitor Shi Yin had hesitated.

Tribulation light surged within the tribulation clouds. That mysterious little boat was obviously headed their way, its outline increasingly distinct.

Soon, Su Yi could see that it was as dark as if it had been cut out of a curtain of night. Its hull was a strange, deep black.

It was only about ten feet long, and it sailed silently through the clouds, stirring up ripples of tribulation light.

Su Yi had a sudden, powerful feeling that the boat had been waiting to carry someone for countless years.

Moreover, so long as he wanted to, he could board it immediately.

The feeling was so intense that it influenced Su Yi’s heart. The impulse was difficult to suppress.

It’s actually capable of influencing my heart? Impressive... Su Yi thought to himself, then illuminated his Natal Heart Lamp. The powerful impulse went up in a puff of smoke, unable to affect his heart any further.

The impulse had been so powerful that Su Yi was certain that, in his shoes, not even a Heavenly Sovereign would have been able to resist the temptation.

Moreover, Su Yi was certain that the Cauldron of Fate’s strange behavior was connected to the Untethered Boat.

After all, the boat had appeared immediately after the cauldron reacted. There was no way it was just a coincidence.

Su Yi glanced down at the Coffin for the Living, then whispered, “Do you want to board?”

The jade box struggled violently as if agitated.

Su Yi just laughed, sealed the box with the power of the Book of Destiny, and flung it. The Cauldron for the Living blurred into a beam of light and shot into the clouds.

Bang!

As soon as the Coffin for the Living entered the clouds, its seal broke, and the box split. A figure shot out, erupting with terrifying Laws of the Grand Dao, then hurtled out of the tribulation clouds with all his might.

Upon closer inspection, he was a fair-skinned man in a purple and gold crown. He wore long-sleeved robes, and his every movement was full of the pride of a man long accustomed to power.

This was a living Heavenly Sovereign!

The divine majesty emanating from him was at least as strong as that of the Heavenly Sovereigns Su Yi was familiar with. If anything, it was stronger.

Yet now, the man in long robes fled as if his butt were on fire, shooting out the clouds with all his might.

Moreover, frantic panic was written all over his face. He was obviously desperate to leave.

Kaboom!

The tribulation clouds churned, overflowing with unbelievable, calamitous power. It bore down on the man, instantly dealing him heavy injuries. His defensive Dao Light broke and his flesh tore. It seemed that terrifying tribulation light would quickly grind him away.

Su Yi couldn’t help but gasp. Not even a Heavenly Sovereign can block the suppression of those tribulation clouds?

At this rate, he won’t even be able to escape!

Deep within the clouds, the man in long robes seemed to realize what was happening. As he struggled, he cursed, “Damn you, you little wretch! You sure are ruthless!”

Su Yi laughed. “You’re the one with wicked intentions here, not me.”

“Nonsense! I was hiding in the Coffin for the Living and completely sealed. How could I possibly have harmed you?” the man shouted back. “While you’ve just plunged me into certain doom!”

Su Yi took a sip of wine. “You can’t blame me for that. How could I possibly have known how dangerous the tribulation clouds were?”

“You...” The man in long robes glared, but his injuries were heavy, and his body was badly battered. The tribulation light would soon grind him away completely. He looked as wretched as could be.

But then, he suddenly threw back his head and laughed. “Interesting! You’re only in the Immeasurable Realm. Aren’t you afraid I’ll seek revenge?”

Su Yi blinked in surprise. Despite his keen senses, he saw no sign of despair on the man’s face, and his smile wasn’t faked. It seemed he’d gone all out, and that he thought nothing of life and death. There was no sign of his earlier frantic panic.

The change in his mentality surprised Su Yi, and he couldn’t help but see the man in a new light.

“How can you get revenge if you’re about to die?” Su Yi asked with great interest.

The man in long robes seemed to have given up. He no longer struggled, instead letting the tribulation light destroy his body.

His gaze was calm and composed. “This is just a clone I hid at the bottom of the Sea of Fate. If it’s destroyed, it’s destroyed.”

Su Yi’s brow furrowed. “A clone?”

Boom!

Tribulation light blasted the man’s fleshly body to bits, destroying it. All that remained was an indistinct soul body.

He sighed, then turned to look at the Untethered Boat. “I left this clone here just in case. I would never have guessed... that some junior would destroy it for no good reason. Perhaps this is my fate?”

His voice was tinged with self-deprecation and frustration

He turned, pointed at Su Yi, laughed, and cursed him out. “You’re lucky, kid! Had you pulled this stunt in the Primordial Era, the whole world would see you in a new light!”

Su Yi could tell that the man in long robes didn’t particularly hate him for this.

“But don’t think this is over. When my true body breaks free, he’ll find you to settle the score!” The man in long robes snorted coldly. “Even if he doesn’t kill you, he’ll have to at least silence you. If word spreads of what happened here today, I’ll have no face left!”

Su Yi couldn’t help but feel stunned. “Is that all?”

The man in long robes said irritably, “I’m a Heavenly Sovereign! How could I possibly make trouble for an ignorant junior like you? I’m not that petty or narrow-minded!”

Su Yi raised an eyebrow. If things were really as the man in long robes said, his magnanimity... really was extraordinary!

“Might I ask your name?” said Su Yi, suddenly intrigued.

“Me? My name is but a single character, Yi. I just wonder if anyone still knows of me after all these years...” said the man. It was all he could say before what little remained of his soul was obliterated beneath the terrifying tribulation light.

All that remained was his final, wistful sigh still echoing through the air.

Despite himself, Su Yi was dazed.
