From Human to Skeleton: Revived with Infinite System Crystals
Chapter 838 - 838: The Band Does Not Name The Child
Jade moved the tablet before anyone could turn toward the cafeteria tables.
The motion was small. Ty still saw it.
A hand, a tilt, a clean refusal to let the room use a child's face because a damaged field had appeared on a page.
Waddell understood and shifted with her. The feed now showed the shelter floor, the leg of a folding chair, and one scuffed shoe that belonged to no record.
Omina saw the shift too.
"The temporary escort band stays evidence until this review proves otherwise."
Zunoder's attention stayed on the damaged name field.
"Pediatric routing gives lawful handling a stronger path than loose remains."
Ty flexed the four fingers he still had. The missing one hurt as if a thread had been tied around it and pulled from two rooms away.
"A child band gives no one a cleaner claim on my finger."
The drawer accepted that sentence slowly enough to insult everyone watching.
JJ wrote something hard enough to tear the top layer of paper.
"Slow agreement is still agreement, and I am counting it."
Heissman kept both hands visible on the table.
"Temporary escort bands authorize movement through hospital lanes. Sealed-item contact needs a separate authority trail."
Zunoder turned the answer toward him.
"The part after that is where authority starts hiding."
Heissman flinched, because the trap was real and he had helped build the floor under it.
Omina wrote the safer version before Zunoder could climb on top.
"Escort band alone authorizes movement, while threshold contact requires separate cross-route authority."
The drawer liked cross-route authority.
Ty could feel that. It made the boot mark warm and pulled at the missing place in his hand, not hard enough to move him, only enough to remind him what the room wanted from a piece of him.
Yun-Jin saw his hand shift.
"Sleeve stays enough unless his skin becomes evidence again."
Omina nodded without looking away from the sheet.
"His skin is not a shortcut to the band."
Mara sat very still on the other side of the tape.
Rose watched her, not the drawer.
"Say what you know before the record says it cleaner."
Mara pressed her thumb into the side of her own hand until the nail changed color.
"Escort bands were supposed to keep children from being misplaced during transfers. Old systems learned to use them because misplaced sounds softer than taken."
The shelter feed went quiet.
Not silent. Quiet.
There was chair noise somewhere off camera. A spoon touched a bowl. Someone whispered a question and another adult answered with too much care.
Jade kept the camera low. Ty understood the work in that. Adults looked for the nearest child when paperwork opened a child-shaped hole. Jade gave them tile, chair legs, and nothing useful.
Ty kept his eyes on the drawer.
If he looked at Jade's feed, he would look for Mason. The room would learn that from him. Then it would ask worse questions with softer words.
Omina underlined temporary, escort, and band as three separate pieces.
"Temporary is time. Escort is duty. Band is object. None of those is identity."
The drawer accepted the breakdown.
Zunoder smiled with no pleasure in it.
"Identity being damaged may be exactly why the routing path matters."
"A damaged identity field gives permission to no one here."
"It may still explain how routing reached the door."
"Then it can explain itself without owning anyone in this room."
JJ tapped her pencil once.
"Put that in large handwriting for the offices in the back."
Omina wrote it in the margin.
The drawer opened the escort-band record under the same limits. No child face. No public name. No shelter demand. No title conclusion.
It resisted shelter demand.
Jade's voice came low through the tablet.
"If that record asks my room for a child, I will turn this feed off."
Caelin answered from his office before Zunoder could make that sound like obstruction.
"Public office will support shelter refusal on child exposure."
Waddell added, "Put that where your phones can read it."
Caelin's aide typed.
The drawer accepted no shelter demand with better weight after the public office took the cost. Ty hated that the same sentence grew stronger when it came from a desk, but he needed the stronger sentence more than he needed the hate.
The escort-band record opened.
Mercy General pediatrics had issued the band during emergency overflow. The child name field had been damaged before the band entered Lost Property. The band had reached night routing station four on a transfer tray, not on a wrist.
Ty's hand closed halfway before he caught it.
On a transfer tray.
Not on a wrist.
That was how the room made a child smaller. Remove the arm, keep the band, move the object, and pretend the transfer stayed clean.
Yun-Jin's grip tightened on his sleeve.
"He is reacting to tray language, not title language."
Omina wrote it down.
Zunoder leaned forward.
"Tray handling supports the possibility of lawful transfer."
JJ looked up from her torn page.
"It supports the possibility that someone moved evidence after removing the child from it."
Heissman answered before Zunoder could.
"A band off wrist requires a reason code."
The drawer produced the reason code and stopped.
Illegible.
Ty stared at the word.
Illegible was useful. Illegible let a person vanish behind poor ink, bad glass, wet paper, tired staff, a printer that skipped when too many people needed it not to skip.
Mara covered her mouth.
Rose stepped closer to the tape.
"Was it illegible when filed, or illegible now?"
The drawer hesitated.
That hesitation went through Ty harder than a clear answer.
Omina caught it.
"Enter timing uncertainty before the record pretends the damage was always there."
The drawer marked the reason code as legible at initial scan and illegible in current review copy.
Heissman went white in a cleaner way this time.
"That means the copy degraded after intake, under office custody."
"Or someone degraded it after the intake scan," JJ said.
Zunoder held up one hand.
"Degradation alone proves nothing about tampering yet today."
Omina's pen kept moving.
"No proof of tampering. Proof that the current copy cannot carry the reason code."
Ty watched the line settle.
It was fair and still awful. Fair kept the room from lying in his favor. Awful kept it from pretending fairness fixed the missing child inside the band.
The drawer opened the next lower fact.
Expected return item.
Omina said, "Object only, and keep the child out of the answer."
The drawer complied.
Expected return item: temporary escort band.
Returned item: none.
Waddell swore under his breath on the shelter feed.
Caelin's aide stopped typing.
Jade held the tablet steady. That took discipline Ty could see even through bad video.
Zunoder's voice stayed smooth.
"A missing return item leaves lawful custody unresolved."
Omina looked at him.
"It establishes the band left the ordinary chain and failed to come back."
"Ordinary chains break under emergency conditions all the time."
JJ answered, "Emergency is not a laundry chute for children."
The drawer took the sentence.
Ty felt the boot mark cool for the first time since the band appeared.
Not relief.
Space.
Omina used it.
"What left station four after the band failed return?"
The drawer searched.
This answer came with no pull in Ty's hand. That scared him more. His body had become a bad warning system. If a fact arrived without pain, he trusted it less.
The drawer found a movement record.
Sealed-item desk received borrowed access. Door contact followed. Bone contact followed after door contact.
Everyone in the room adjusted at once.
Even Zunoder.
Ty read the order again.
Door contact first.
Bone contact after.
Omina placed her palm flat on the page before anyone could speak over the sequence.
"The sequence puts something else at the door before the missing bone."
The drawer accepted the order.
Zunoder recovered fast.
"Something else may still connect to his title path."
"Maybe the title path is somewhere else, but my finger came second."
The room gave that sentence room.
Not kindness. Procedure, maybe. Shock, maybe.
He took it anyway.
Omina wrote sequence established.
Then she asked the question that made Heissman look down.
"What carried door contact before the missing bone reached it?"
The drawer opened one line and damaged the rest.
Temporary escort band carried borrowed access to sealed item D zero one.
The damaged name field stayed sealed.
The band had reached the door before the bone did.
