A faint scent of lemon clung to Jasper Shaw.

Chloe Sinclair was taken aback by his actions. She froze for a second before gently patting his back. “What’s wrong?”

Jasper’s voice was muffled. “I missed you.”

Chloe didn’t know whether to laugh or cry. “But we just saw each other a little while ago, didn’t we?”

Jasper didn’t say anything.

He pulled away and asked cautiously, “Did Wyatt Thorne give you a hard time?”

Chloe smiled, a hint of disdain in her eyes. “You really think he could hurt me?”

‘With Wyatt’s current capabilities, he’s no match for me at all.’

Jasper stood to the side, watching her.

‘Her proud gaze is actually pretty cute.’

“Yeah, of course he’s not.”

Suddenly, a thought struck Chloe. Her brow furrowed, a hint of anxiety in her eyes. “You’d better keep those files of yours safe. Today…”

Chloe trailed off, glancing around.

There was no one else around, but Chloe still felt uneasy.

“Eight, scan the area for any surveillance systems.”

“Right away.” Eight replied, its voice excited after a long silence. A moment later, it reported, “Master, there’s a small listening device three meters directly in front of you.”

Chloe’s expression darkened, and she slowly walked over.

Jasper said nothing, simply following behind her.

He watched as Chloe stopped in front of the sofa. She then bent down, her long arm reaching under it, feeling around for something.

Suddenly, Chloe’s movements paused. Then, with a firm tug…

A small black object appeared in her hand.

Jasper’s eyes widened slightly, but he remained silent. He walked over slowly and took the black listening device from Chloe’s palm, his brow furrowed deeply.

Chloe gave him a meaningful look.

The next moment, Jasper walked into the restroom and tossed the listening device into the toilet.

“How did you find it, Chloe?” Jasper asked, puzzled.

‘He couldn’t believe he hadn’t noticed it himself, yet Chloe had found it the moment she walked in.’

Chloe replied, “A lucky guess.”

Seeing that she didn’t want to elaborate, Jasper didn’t press the matter.

‘He’d always trusted his girl.’

“Jasper, are those files of yours very important?”

Chloe couldn’t help but ask.

This time, Jasper hesitated for a moment before nodding.

“What is it? Can you tell me?”

Jasper nodded. “I can tell you, but no one else.”

Chloe froze, asking in confusion, “What do you mean?”

Jasper took a deep breath and explained, “I’m part of Grandpa’s ‘Nine Chapters’ Project.”

“The files for the ‘Nine Chapters’ Project are in my possession.”

Chloe was stunned.

‘The Old Master had named this communications technology experiment the ‘Nine Chapters’ Project.’

‘She was involved in the same research as Jasper.’

It slowly dawned on Chloe. “You do research?”

Chloe’s eyes widened, her pupils filled with shock.

Jasper nodded. “Mhm, I do.”

Chloe: “???”

‘Not even a year after getting into Emberfall University, Jasper had switched his major to finance.’

‘What on earth happened?’

Jasper rubbed his nose. “Actually, I switched departments back then because of… some things.”

Chloe seemed to guess what he was alluding to, so she didn’t dwell on it.

‘Suddenly, she felt like she, the supposed ‘academic ace’, wasn’t living up to the title.’

So she changed the subject. “Are you saying that the ‘Nine Chapters’ Project has been targeted this whole time?”
