Chapter 488: Chapter 243: This Is an Attempt to Scam Someone

"Hello? Is this Su Chen?"

The call had just connected when a slightly urgent voice came from the other end, tinged with a hint of anxiety. Su Chen was taken aback; the caller had used his name right off the bat. ’This doesn’t feel like a sales pitch!’

Shouldn’t they have used a respectful title like Mr. Su?

Besides, the voice on the other end sounded vaguely familiar. Suppressing his doubts, Su Chen asked, "This is Su Chen. Who’s this?"

Upon hearing Su Chen’s response, the person on the other end clearly sounded relieved. Su Chen could even hear a long sigh of relief through the phone.

"Bro, it’s me, your cousin Chen Fan!"

"Chen Fan?" Su Chen’s brow furrowed the moment he heard the name. He had just gone to Suzhou to deal with matters concerning his eldest and third uncles’ families. His cousin, Chen Fan, had already fled to Southeast Asia because of gambling debts. Why would he suddenly think to call him now?

And it was an overseas call, too. Logically, shouldn’t he be calling his family, like his father, to let them know he was safe? ’Or has he already called them?’

As far as Su Chen could remember, the last time they had seen each other was at his high school graduation.

For someone he hadn’t spoken to in so many years to suddenly call, there had to be a reason.

Su Chen mulled it over for a moment, then decided to stop thinking about it. ’Maybe my cousin struck it rich out there, and he’s calling just to show off.’

It was better to just wait and see what his cousin wanted.

"Bro, why aren’t you talking? Is the connection bad?" Chen Fan’s voice came through the phone again, pulling Su Chen back from his thoughts.

"Ah, it’s nothing, man. Where are you striking it rich these days? I tried to get in touch when I visited Suzhou, but I couldn’t reach you!" Su Chen pretended not to know his situation. He just wanted to sound Chen Fan out and see if he had called home.

If he had called home, he would definitely know about the recent changes in the family. But... if he didn’t know, then things were about to get interesting.

When Su Chen mentioned going to Suzhou to find him, the man’s breathing on the other end even hitched, which made Su Chen’s frown deepen.

"Ah, haha, when did you go to Suzhou? Did you call my dad?"

Su Chen’s heart skipped a beat. He knew instantly that his cousin, Chen Fan, hadn’t called anyone in the family. Otherwise, he wouldn’t have asked such a question.

"No. You know how stern Uncle is—his expression scared me since I was a kid. How could I dare to call him?" This wasn’t a lie. Among his uncles, Su Chen was closest to his second uncle.

The reason was, just as Su Chen said, his eldest uncle was too stern. Having lived through a tougher era, he was a bit rigid in his ways. As a child, Su Chen had never liked visiting his eldest uncle’s house.

As for his third uncle, he was always working in another city, so the opportunities to meet were pitifully few, let alone grow close.

Hearing Su Chen’s answer, Chen Fan relaxed noticeably on the other end of the line. The weight on his chest finally lifted, and even his breathing became much softer.

"Your big bro isn’t in the country right now. I’m in Singapore, in Southeast Asia. I came here with a friend!"

"Bro, you have no idea how easy it is to make money out here. I’ve been here less than a year and I’ve already made several hundred thousand. The only thing is, I’m running the business all by myself, so my expenses are high and I haven’t saved much!"

Knowing that Su Chen hadn’t called his father, Chen Fan’s tone became much more casual and confident.

"Oh, really? No way! You’re making that much money in Singapore, man?" Su Chen played along perfectly, his voice rising several decibels, thick with feigned excitement.

Li Li, who was sitting across from Su Chen, also sensed that something was off. Recalling some short videos she had recently seen on TikTok, a thought flashed through her mind.

She was about to speak but saw that Su Chen was still on the phone, so she swallowed her words and decided to wait quietly for him to finish.

"Of course! Your bro here is an expert at this business now. I’m just short on manpower. Otherwise, my profits could at least double!"

At this point, Chen Fan’s voice paused on the other end. He then asked tentatively, "Bro, I remember you went off to Shanghai a few years ago, right? Are you still working there? Why don’t you come to Singapore and get rich with me!"

"We’re brothers. I’d never let you lose out. I’ll even personally show you the ropes!"

’Get rich with him?’ A strange expression appeared on Su Chen’s face. ’Those words sound a little jarring.’

Still, Su Chen had a good idea of what his cousin was after: he wanted him to go to Singapore. As for whether this was a good or bad thing, he couldn’t be sure just yet.

"Can I really make a lot of money? But man, I’ve never been abroad before. I wouldn’t know anyone or anything. What if something happens?"

Sensing that Su Chen was a little tempted, Chen Fan’s tone grew even more urgent.

"Bro, think about it. How much can you make in a year back home? A hundred or two hundred thousand is the absolute most, right? But over here in Singapore, you can easily make several hundred thousand a year, no problem!"

"If we brothers work together, we could even make millions!"

On the other end of the line, Chen Fan grew more and more excited as he spoke, as if everything he was saying was actually true.
