Global Descent: I Alone Can See Hidden Evolution Paths
Chapter 215: inside
The wooden path leading down to Old Man Jo’s stone storefront didn’t offer any cover from the salt wind. The floating timbers of the barge lane rolled heavily in the purplish silt of the bay, their iron mooring links screeching with a dry, metallic friction that completely swallowed the sound of the rain.
Jun-ho stopped right in the center of the narrow pier lane, three paces from the red iron roof of the forge. He didn’t drop his duffel bag down. His left hand kept a casual, loose grip on the rough black hemp wrap of The Ash Remnant, the matte-black blade perfectly still by his side. Under his gray hood, his face was an unmoving sheet of stone, his newly expanded six-thousand-point mana lake moving in a deep, silent frequency behind his stone-gray chest plates.
Rea stood right at his shoulder, her long bare legs exposed high along the silk line of her black tunic as the wind whipped her hem against his denim trousers. Her golden-blue eyes didn’t look at the storefront; they narrowed as she focused on the long shadow cast by a rusted crane structure forty meters down the slipway. Her full crimson lips lost their lazy smile, her fingers dropping slow and steady toward the obsidian dagger on her thigh.
"The wind is carrying the scent of dried sheep fat, big guy," Rea whispered, her voice dropping into a smooth, sultry register that was close against his ear. Her hip remained wedged tight against his side for stability on the moving timber. "That’s the grease the Ashen Fangs use to seal their crossbow strings. The main office didn’t wait for the morning shift to clear the harbor logs; they sent the secondary detachment down the coast line by nightfall."
Eun-bi walked up from the rear line, her canvas bag slung tight across her gray flannel shirt. Her dark hair was wet, strands sticking to her forehead, but her sharp face carried that regular, flat public-sector drawl as she adjusted her grip on her trauma scissors. "The radio wire just dropped its signal entirely, Jun-ho. The local area tracking pulse is frozen. They’ve dropped a heavy communication shield over this entire floating lane."
Before Tae-woo could step forward to check the corner, a sharp, heavy TWANG exploded from the dark roof of the rusted crane structure.
Three heavy iron arrows, their shafts wrapped in unrefined wolf gut that carried a high-tier rot attribute, shot through the gray mist in a tight, horizontal line meant to clear the path. They weren’t aimed at Jun-ho; they were targeted straight at the wooden pillars holding up the forge roof, aiming to drop the limestone masonry onto their heads before the front line could even deploy.
"Lock the blocks!" Tae-woo shouted, his voice a massive roar that cut right through the sound of the surf.
The five elite vanguards moved in a single, synchronized motion. They didn’t drop into a defensive block; they hoisted their wide blocks of dark basin rock with both hands, slamming the sharp stone edges flat into the wet timber planks of the pier. The five stone walls formed a solid, unbroken mountain barrier that closed the narrow lane completely, the three iron arrows hitting the dark basalt with a rapid series of dull, harmless clicks that didn’t leave a single white scratch on the rock.
"Target identified!" a raspy voice called out from behind the crane plates—the voice of the secondary Fang captain. "The Sillim meat shield is running the unranked ledger! Enforcers, deploy the chain nets! Don’t let him lift the black bar!"
Twelve men in grease-stained leather coats and grey steel visors burst out from the shadows of the adjacent shipping containers. They didn’t use standard guild formations; they spread out across the floating barges in a wide half-circle, their hands drawing short iron clubs and heavy weighted mesh lines lined with sharp iron barbs.
Jun-ho took two slow steps forward, stepping straight through the small gap between Tae-woo’s stone barriers. He didn’t lift his sword to strike, and he didn’t look at the men closing the lane.

A sudden, circular wave of thick grey frost blew outward from his large rubber boots, instantly covering the wet timber planks and turning the purplish oil puddles between the barges into solid white discs of hard glass for thirty meters around the forge entrance. The temperature inside the circle dropped forty degrees in a microsecond, the freezing sea spray turning into long, sharp icicles that locked the floating hulls together in a solid white sheet of ice.
The twelve hunters lunged forward together, their iron clubs raised to crush his shoulders, but the moment their leather boots crossed the boundary of his domain, their kinetic velocity died by half. Their legs tracked through the frozen air like they were moving through thick syrup, their visors covering in a layer of white crystals that blinded their tracking loops.
"Rea, take the rear line," Jun-ho ordered flatly.
"Watch the wrist snap, big guy," Rea murmured, her golden-blue eyes spinning in a lazy, sharp circle as her full crimson lips parted.
With her multiplied master rogue speed, her black silk tunic cut a clean, fluid line through the frozen fog. Her long bare legs flashed under the gray sky as she glided past the iron pillars, her obsidian dagger slicing through the hunters’ mesh nets with a sharp clack before they could even cast the lines. Her full, perfect hourglass shape twisted smoothly through the steam, her hip brushing light against the stone-gray plate of Jun-ho’s armor as three of the rogues dropped their broken clubs into the gray slush.
Jun-ho raised The Ash Remnant with his left hand, the new matte-black hemp wrap dry and solid in his grip. The four ancient characters near the handle base—[The Ash Remnant]—ignited with that brilliant, white-hot fire that cast no light but made the timber planks beneath his feet vibrate with a deep, mechanical resonance.
He didn’t use his back, and he didn’t drop into a legacy vanguard crouch. He simply snapped his left wrist, driving the sharp matte edge of the thousand-fold blade straight down onto the lead captain’s grey steel visor.
BOOM.
The thunderclap was faster this time, a localized earthquake that shattered the thick steel mask into thousands of tiny iron shards that blew straight back into the cargo containers. The force of the strike, multiplied a thousand times by the weapon’s bound trait, didn’t just clear the front line; the shockwave tore all twelve hunters off their feet, throwing their broken bodies through the wooden rails of the pier straight into the dark sea water, their heavy iron clubs flying five meters into the salt mud.

The gray notification boxes piled up across his vision in clean lines before vanishing, leaving only the ink-black text of his new level waiting on his screen.
Jun-ho lowered his sword, his fingers uncurling from the rough hemp grip as the frost around his boots began to melt back into regular oil brine. He didn’t look at the white foam breaking over the empty pier lane; his dark eyes turned back toward the red iron roof of the storefront where Old Man Jo was finally sliding his iron screen back to look at the mud.
Eun-bi walked out from behind the stone barriers, her canvas bag slung tight, her silver scissors glinting faintly in the gray light. She looked at the empty containers, a dry, sharp smile pulling at the corner of her lips as she looked down at his boots. "The secondary detail is completely dark, Jun-ho. The auditors in the central district won’t even see the contract file before the morning shift turns the terminal off."
"Let’s go inside," Jun-ho said flatly, his large rubber boots making a steady, firm crunch against the wet timber planks as they headed toward the open forge door, leaving the broken hunter line behind them in the dark gray mist of the outer bay.
