The volcanic basalt bricks inside Old Man Jo’s back room didn’t hold the heat of the forge hearth. They were slick with a cold, purplish oil that smelled of deep water shale and raw mineral ore, the damp air vibrating with a slow, heavy pulse that came straight from the hidden foundations beneath the floating lane.

Jun-ho sat on the wide cedar storage chest, his large rubber boots planted flat against the dirt floor boards. He had unslung his heavy canvas duffel bag, setting the book casing down between his shins. His plain gray shirt was damp from the mudflat spray, the thin fabric clinging tight to his shoulders and exposing the dense lines of his bare upper chest, which had grown thicker after the level-up on the pier.

Right at the lower corner of his eye, the solid black status text box opened across his vision, perfectly silent.

[ Level: 29]

[ Unassigned Attribute Points: 5]

[ Mana: 2700/6000]

[ Inventory: The Monarch’s Ledger (Bound)]

He didn’t waste time thinking about the twelve broken visors floating in the bay. He focused his mind entirely on the five fresh points waiting in his eye.

"Put all 5 points into Mana," Jun-ho whispered into his own collar.

[Attribute Allocation Detected: 5 Points to Mana.]

[Applying 100x Multiplier to Resource Logic...]

[Mana increased by 500. Current Mana: 3200/6500.]

The reaction inside his chest was completely silent. The frozen lake behind his ribs expanded by another full circle, turning into a massive, reservoir of sixty-five hundred mana points that made the skin on his wrists feel warm and tight.

The air right around his storage chest grew cold, a thin layer of gray frost opening across the wood grain of the floorboards beneath his soles.

Rea slid onto the cedar locker right next to his side, her long bare legs exposed high along the silk line of her black tunic as she shifted her hips with a slow, deliberate swing. Her full crimson lips were inches from his jawline, her wild orchid perfume cutting right through the sour grease smell of the forge. She leaned her entire weight flat against his ribs, her golden-blue eyes spinning in a lazy, sharp circle under the oil lamp.

"The old man has the legendary catalyst ready, big guy," Rea whispered, her voice a deep, sultry purr that made the small air bubbles in the oil lamp lens twitch. Her warm thigh pressed firmly against his denim trousers, her bare hand tracing a slow line down his forearm with a teasing, light friction.

"The Sun King flagship just cleared the twelve-mile buoys, and they’re deploying their secondary search line across the harbor mouth. If we don’t lock this class upgrade into the ledger within three minutes, their deck mages will freeze the shipping channel from behind."

"The mages are slow," Jun-ho said flatly.

Eun-bi sat across the narrow cabin aisle on the edge of the canvas cot, her canvas bag slung tight across her waist. She had the manual paper logs pulled out of her pack, her sharp eyes narrowing as she looked at the two of them sitting close on the cedar chest. She didn’t shift her position back; her gray flannel shirt was left undone at the throat because of the heat, showing the sharp, neat line of her collarbones as her bare thigh stayed pressed firmly against the side of Jun-ho’s rubber boot for stability against the heavy rolling of the house.

"The six high-tier cores are secure," Eun-bi said, her voice dropping into that flat, quiet public-sector drawl as she tapped her silver scissors against her wrist ring. "But the shortwave receiver just picked up a fresh log entry from the central harbor. The regional director has placed a forty-million-won bounty on your name, Jun-ho. They aren’t just sending the second line enforcers anymore—they’ve listed your registration number on the black-market contract boards."

Jun-ho took a slow drink of the hot ginger broth Rea had left simmering over the stove pipes, the spicy liquid clearing the dry salt taste from his throat. He reached out his right hand, his fingers closing around Rea’s waist under the loose silk fabric. Her skin was smooth, burning hot from the boiler line, her body firm and athletic as she leaned her entire weight flat against his chest. Her dark hair brushed softly against his jawline with a silky friction that made the suppressed mana behind his ribs give a sudden, deep throb.

"The contract boards require a live target," Jun-ho said, his voice low and steady in the small room. He turned his head slightly, his lips brushing light against the soft skin of Rea’s neck before looking back at Eun-bi. "The boards don’t check the outer sidings anyway."

Old Man Jo walked out from behind the heavy iron screen, his calloused hands holding the long cedar box that contained the legendary upgrade catalyst. He didn’t look at Rea’s legs, and he didn’t look at Eun-bi’s scissors; his small, sharp eyes locked straight onto the matte-black edge of Jun-ho’s sword.

"Gyeong-su made the core wedge, but he didn’t give it the Monarch’s alignment," the old fence said, his voice deep and raspy like two bricks grinding together over the sound of the engine roar outside. He set the box down on the granite counter with a heavy, hollow scrape. "These six primal cores you brought down from the northern vault... they carry the unfiltered logic of the Ash Monarch phase. If you’re ready to cross the level-thirty line, drop the book onto the anvil."

Jun-ho didn’t answer him with a speech. He reached into his duffel bag with his bare left hand, his fingers closing around the cold brass lock of The Monarch’s Ledger.

[The Monarch’s Ledger System Active.]

[Target Asset: The Ash Remnant (Phase 3 Evolution Upgrade).]

[Resource Requirement: 6 High-Tier Primal Cores.]

[Draining 1,000 Mana points. Current Mana: 2200/6500.]

"Start the alignment," Jun-ho whispered into the quiet room.

[Applying 100x Multiplier to Item Evolution...]

A sudden, freezing wave of white mana shot out of the six blue crystals on the counter, splitting the stone casing into clean gray splinters as the energy flooded straight into the dark cedar box. The thick hemp cord didn’t burn; it changed color instantly, turning from a rough charcoal gray into a deep, solid matte-black that looked like dark glass. The four ancient characters etched near the handle base—[The Ash Remnant]—ignited with a brilliant, white-hot fire that cast no light but made the stone walls of the shop hum with a deep, mechanical frequency.

[Item Evolution Successful: The Ash Remnant (Phase 3 Form - Soul Bound).]

[Item Attribute: Physical strikes carry a 1,000x weight calculation upon impact. Your mana conductivity is increased by 80%.]

[New Passive Gained: The Ash Monarch’s Edge cannot be blocked by standard tier shields or corporate armor lines.]

Right then, the thin plastic speaker of Eun-bi’s radio let out a high, frantic whine of static.

"—The harbor lines are completely blocked. The Sun King flagship has deployed three auxiliary search hulls across the twelve-mile reef. Target Kang Jun-ho has been localized near the lower slipway barn. All units, execute open extraction order under Section 4."

Jun-ho stood up from his low bench, his large rubber boots making a quiet, firm thud on the packed dirt floor. He lifted the newly upgraded weapon with his left hand, the heavy hemp grip feeling as light and fluid as a dry willow branch in his palm, balanced perfectly against his multiplied Phase 3 strength.

"The secret transit channel cuts right behind the old refinery cliff," Rea said, her golden-blue eyes spinning in a lazy, victorious circle as she slid off the counter, her long bare legs exposed high along the silk line of her tunic. Her full crimson lips parted into a lazy smile as she caught the frayed thread near his elbow, her hip wedged tight against his side. "My boat has a full tank of diesel, big guy. We can slide right past their radar operators before the morning shift turns the terminal off."

"Let’s go," Jun-ho said flatly.

They burst out of the back door of the forge, Tae-woo and the four elite vanguards forming a solid line of rock blocks behind them as they ran down the dark timber planks of the pier. The flagship Sun King was already turning its high-power halogen searchlights toward the slipway, two long lanes of blinding white light cutting through the gray morning fog.

But before the guild cutters could even align their tracking loops, Old Man Hak slammed the gear handle forward on the wooden lugger, the single-cylinder engine letting out a massive, dark roar as the boat slid away from the concrete pier. They dove straight into the dark, hidden opening of the refinery channel, the heavy oak hull disappearing completely into the thick yellow fog of the outer channel, leaving the maritime blockade and the legacy families completely behind them in the dark gray mist of the open sea.
