Global Descent: I Alone Can See Hidden Evolution Paths
Chapter 222: Divided Hearth
The twin diesel propellers of Rea’s lugger hummed a deep, rhythmic bass through the thick oak timbers of the hull, cutting away from the cold granite walls of the central district drainage canals. Outside the small, grease-stained portholes, the black water of the open river mouth gave way to the rolling, ink-black swells of the outer maritime shelf. The city of Seoul was nothing more than a jagged line of yellow halogen searchlights dying out against a mountain of bruised purple mist three miles behind the stern.
Down in the low-ceilinged crew hold, the ambient temperature was almost suffocatingly thick. The raw copper boiler line tracking across the iron keel plates let out a continuous, high-pitched whistle, leaking thin white columns of hot steam that smelled of heavy sea brine, burnt oil, and the rich, peppery scent of the dried persimmon tea Eun-bi had left to simmer on the stove grate.
Jun-ho sat flat on the long cedar storage box, his massive rubber boots caked in dried gray salt crust. He had laid the stone-gray slabs of the Ashen Monarch Core Plate against the bulkhead, leaving him in just his frayed, form-fitting gray undershirt. The thin cotton fabric was completely damp from the sea spray, clinging tightly to his shoulders and highlighting the dense, iron-hard lines of his chest and upper frame—muscles that had multiplied in physical mass and weight after the double milestone clearance.
His left hand remained loosely wrapped around the rough black hemp cord of The Ash Remnant, the heavy slag crossguard resting cool against his knee. Right at the lower corner of his left eye, the solid black blocks of the ledger script were waiting, perfectly silent.

The cabin door gave a short, loose click as it swung inward, and the close space inside the hold instantly filled with a sharp, competing mix of fragrances.
Lilith moved through the narrow threshold first. She didn’t drop her gaze down; her wide, luminous crimson eyes glowed with a lazy, dangerous fire under the long waves of her ink-black hair. Her exceptionally long, smooth legs cut a clean, fluid line through the low purple mist of the floorboards, her narrow waist twisting with a deliberate, heavy rhythm that accentuated the full, perfect curve of her round hips. The tight crimson leather of her outfit was pulled low at the front, exposing the full, rounded swell of her half-visible chest as she sat down directly on the cedar locker right next to Jun-ho’s knee.
She didn’t waste her fingers on a weapon. She leaned her entire voluptuous weight flat against his bare upper arm, her breathing quick and deep, her full red lips parting into a low, breathless murmur that carried the scent of raw sulfur and dark incense straight to his neck.
"The naval cutters are still circling the empty concrete wharf above, big guy," Lilith whispered, her voice a smooth, velvety purr that trembled with a sudden, fierce devotion. Her long fingers, tipped with sharp crimson nails, slid slowly up his bare forearm, her palms burning hot against his cool skin as she marked her placement. "Their deck mages can’t read the registry line anymore. My spirit is already locked to your ribs, Jun-ho. Let the city families count their empty crates—I want to watch you clear the twelve-mile reef blocks from the inside of this room."
Her primitive demon instincts were completely unraveled. She wasn’t calculating a black-market contract fee; the raw, absolute density of his Phase 3 framework had broken her defenses, forcing her to lean her large chest flat against his ribs with a submissive, desperate hunger.
"The room is small, Lilith," Jun-ho said, his voice a low, steady murmur under his gray hood. He didn’t pull his arm back an inch.
"It’s too small for a demon who doesn’t know how to keep her leather straps on her own bench,"
Eun-bi’s sharp, furious voice barked from the opposite canvas cot.
The little nurse stood up straight, her heavy canvas bag slung tight across her waist. Her dark hair was wet and messy, loose strands sticking to her forehead from the sweat of the lower channels, but her sharp face was completely rigid with an intense, biting jealousy. She walked two long steps across the narrow aisle, jamming her heavy rubber boot directly between Lilith’s leather trousers and the side of Jun-ho’s denim jeans. Her bare thigh pressed hard against his shins for stability as the boat hit a larger swell, her fingers keeping a tight, angry grip on her silver trauma scissors.
"The database log is still running the core synchronization, Jun-ho," Eun-bi said, her voice dropping into that flat, quiet public-sector drawl that was thick with an intense, sharp irritation. She didn’t look at Lilith’s chest, keeping her gaze locked straight onto his face. "If you let this rogue broker crowd the narrow track with her hair and her perfume, the system will trace the mana displacement before we can even unpack the high-tier cores. The registry belongs to the collective detail, not her private collection."
Rea slid off the secondary workbench with a slow, fluid stride that made the high-slashed silk of her black tunic rustle loudly against her long bare legs. Her golden-blue eyes spun slowly in a lazy, dangerous circle, her full crimson lips tightening into a thin, jealous line as she wedged her own voluptuous hourglass shape tight against Jun-ho’s opposite sleeve, her wild orchid perfume cutting sharp through Lilith’s sulfur incense.
"The little nurse is right about the timer, big guy," Rea murmured, her bare arm rubbing against his shirt fabric with a heavy, possessive friction. "The demon girl is a bit too forward with her placement. She thinks because she signed the soul bind she owns the whole ledger line."
Lilith let out a low, dangerous growl through her teeth, her crimson eyes flaring with a dark fire as her voluptuous hips leaned even harder into Jun-ho’s side, her large chest pressing flat against his ribs to mark her territory. "The book has already locked my spirit to his chest, water girl. My hand is locked to his line, and the room down here doesn’t check the size of your scissors."
Jun-ho didn’t pull back an inch from any of them. He reached out his bare right hand, his fingers closing around Rea’s narrow waist under the loose silk fabric of her tunic, while his left shoulder remained pinned against the hot, firm line of Lilith’s leather top. The warmth of their bodies cut straight through the icy mana vibrating beneath his collarbone, the dual friction making the suppressed lake behind his ribs pulse in a deep, slow rhythm that filled the entire dark hold with a silent, heavy weight.
"The detail is unranked," Jun-ho said quietly, his dark eyes looking from Eun-bi’s rigid face up to the small porthole window where the gray morning light was fading. "But the line is wide enough for the three of you."
Eun-bi let out a short, sharp chuckle through her teeth, her fingers slowly releasing the grip she had kept on her trauma scissors as she sat back down on the edge of the canvas mattress, her posture relaxing completely as the old wooden lugger cut through the gray mist of the twelve-mile reef, heading straight toward the open sea where the Ministry rules could never run.
