Chapter 259: 259

The blade didn’t scrape against the stone.

When the edge of The Ash Remnant settled into the carved channel across the white bulkhead, the four ancient characters flared once—not with a blinding flash, but with a dull, heavy ember glow that looked more like hot iron cooling in a forge.

The stone door didn’t swing open on hinges. It fractured internally with a dull, wet thud, the massive slab sliding backward four inches into the wall before splitting down the center and crumbling into a pile of gray dust across the floor tiles.

There was no rush of fresh air. Instead, a wall of hot, dry wind rolled out from the dark interior, carrying a sharp, chemical scent that burned the back of the throat—like scorched copper and old ozone.

Jun-ho walked through the gap first, his heavy rubber boots crunching over the broken stone.

The chamber beyond wasn’t a vault or a storage room. It was a massive subterranean basin, easily the size of an airplane hangar, its vaulted ceiling lost in thick shadows far above. Rows of rusted iron pillars lined the perimeter, and down in the center of the concrete floor sat a deep, circular pit filled with a thick, shimmering liquid that glowed a faint, sickly amber.

Eun-bi stopped at the broken threshold, her portable terminal still dead in her hands. She stared out across the hangar, her breath catching in her throat.

"The regional survey maps don’t show this," Eun-bi said, her voice shaking slightly as she hugged her clipboard to her chest. "This isn’t an imperial cache or a Ministry archive. This is a containment basin. Look at the support pylons—they’re wrapped in dampening lead."

Tae-woo lowered his weapon slightly, though his finger stayed hooked near the trigger guard. "Lead wrapping? On a subterranean water line? That’s not meant to keep things out. That’s meant to keep radiation or heavy mana leakage from bleeding up into the upper districts."

Lilith moved past them, her crimson leather boots clicking softly against the concrete. She walked right to the edge of the circular pit, her eyes narrowing as she stared down into the shimmering amber liquid. The heat rising from the pool was intense, turning the air above it into a wavy, distorted haze.

"It’s not mana leakage," Lilith said, her voice dropping into a flat, serious register that lacked its usual teasing lilt. She turned her head, looking back toward Jun-ho. "It’s liquid core residue. The Ministry didn’t just quarantine this sector—they drowned a living asset down here to keep it from waking up."

Rea was already moving along the left wall, her short sword drawn just an inch from its sheath. Her golden-blue eyes scanned the dark corners where the iron pillars met the ceiling.

"Something moved," Rea said sharply, her body tensing as she planted her feet on the concrete. "Up on the catwalk near the eastern crane. It’s not a drone."

Jun-ho didn’t look at the catwalk. He stood near the edge of the amber pool, his left hand keeping a loose, steady grip around the rough black hemp wrap of The Ash Remnant. The matte blade absorbed the sickly yellow light from the liquid, casting no reflection against his gray shirt.

Down in the center of the pool, the amber surface began to churn.

A single massive bubble broke through the thick liquid with a wet, echoing pop, releasing a gust of hot, sulfurous air that washed over the platform. Slowly, two massive eyes—dull, milky white, and entirely lacking pupils—rose above the surface of the pool, fixing their blind gaze straight on Jun-ho.

The creature didn’t roar. It didn’t make a sound at all. But the sheer weight of its presence dropped over the hangar like a physical blanket, making the concrete floor vibrate beneath their boots and rattling the lead-wrapped pillars in their brackets.

[Hostile Detected: Deep Trench Core Sovereign (Level 60)]

[Status: Unbound / Regional Quarantined Asset]

Tae-woo stepped back a half-step, his face draining of color. "Level sixty? Boss, the highest tier in the southern basin was fifty-five. That thing isn’t a guard—it’s a walking catastrophe."

Lilith didn’t back down, though her fingers flexed tightly against her thighs, her crimson suit creaking in the dry heat. She glanced sideways at Jun-ho, her voice dropping to a low, urgent murmur. "The little nurse was right about one thing. We don’t have enough register lines left to suppress a core sovereign of that scale without burning through your baseline frame."

Rea slid across the concrete until her shoulder pressed hard against Jun-ho’s left arm, her bare skin hot and rigid against his shirt fabric. Her gold-and-blue eyes stayed locked on the rising white-eyed monster in the pool.

"We don’t need a suppression line," Rea said, her voice hard and steady. "We have the 9,200x strike weight."

Jun-ho raised The Ash Remnant. The four ancient characters carved into the flat of the metal flared with a sudden, pure white light that cut through the amber gloom of the cavern like a blade.

"Stay back," Jun-ho said.

He didn’t wait for the sovereign to fully clear the pool. He stepped straight to the edge of the concrete basin, planted his rubber boots deep into the stone, and swung the heavy blade downward in a single, unyielding vertical arc.

The blade didn’t hit the water. It didn’t need to.

When the matte edge of The Ash Remnant cut through the air above the amber pool, the sheer density of the 9,200x strike weight created a localized vacuum that tore the surface tension apart. The thick, shimmering liquid didn’t splash; it compressed instantly into a hard, flat disk of absolute stillness before the entire pool imploded inward.

The Level 60 Deep Trench Core Sovereign let out a sound that didn’t vibrate through the ears, but through the ribs—a wet, structural tearing of bone and core matter as the shockwave struck its chest cavity dead center. The massive white-eyed head froze mid-rise, its blind gaze locking onto the white light of the blade for a single, frozen heartbeat.

Then the core shattered.

There was no explosion, no flash of fire, and no debris. The entire four-meter mass of the sovereign simply dissolved into a fine, gray mist that settled instantly over the concrete floor like winter frost.

[Total Core Essence Absorbed into Phase 5 Kinetic Framework.]

Jun-ho lowered his arm. The Ash Remnant made a soft, dull thud against the leather strap of his duffel bag as it returned to his side. The white light died away, leaving the hangar in the dim, sickly amber glow of the residual pool residue.

Eun-bi let out a long, shuddering breath, her fingers loosening their death grip on her clipboard. She slumped back against the edge of a lead-wrapped pillar, her knees visibly shaking.

"It... it’s gone. A level sixty sovereign, neutralized in a single stroke. The systemic registers shouldn’t even allow math like that."

Tae-woo lowered his submachine gun, staring down at the empty basin where the pool had been. He wiped a streak of cold sweat from his forehead with the back of his arm, letting out a dry, disbelieving laugh. "I keep telling myself we’re just running salvage ops, and then the boss goes and deletes a regional catastrophe like it’s a minor hardware glitch."

Lilith didn’t laugh. She moved away from the pillar, her crimson leather boots clicking sharply against the frost-covered concrete as she crossed the distance back to Jun-ho. The teasing edge was entirely gone from her face, replaced by a dark, hungry intensity as she looked up at his unreadable expression.

She didn’t wait for him to turn. She stepped straight into his space, her hands sliding up his chest to grip the damp cotton of his gray shirt. Her breathing was hot and erratic, her wide crimson eyes burning with the adrenaline crash of a near-death encounter averted by sheer, brutal force.

"You really don’t care about the board limits at all, do you, big guy?" Lilith whispered, her lips parting as she pressed her body hard against his side, her hips flush against his denim trousers. "You just rewrite the rules whenever you feel like it."

Rea slid into his other side with the silent, predatory grace of a cat. The high silk of her tunic parted all the way to her hip as she wedged her shoulder firmly beneath his left arm, her bare skin radiating a fierce, possessive heat against his ribs. Her gold-and-blue eyes flicked a sharp, warning glare at Lilith before turning upward, fixing her gaze squarely on Jun-ho’s dark eyes.

"The rules only matter to people who can’t hold their own weight," Rea said, her voice dropping into a low, uncompromising register. Her fingers hooked into the hem of his shirt, pulling him down just enough to force his attention entirely onto her. "The sovereign is dead. The quarantine vault is cleared. Tell us what we’re taking from the inner core, Jun-ho."

Jun-ho didn’t look down at either of them. His massive frame stood immovable between the two women, his pulse steady and heavy beneath his skin. He shifted his weight, his left hand tightening slightly around the rough black hemp wrap of The Ash Remnant as the dark corridor at the back of the hangar began to hum with a low, rising electrical frequency.

"The core vault isn’t empty," Jun-ho said, his voice dry and flat.

He started walking toward the deep rear archway, dragging both women right along with him in his orbit.

"Move."
