Chapter 260: 260

The dark archway at the back of the hangar didn’t lead to another concrete tunnel. It opened into a narrow, circular chamber lined with vertical copper coils that hummed with a low, tooth-rattling vibration. There were no lights overhead, but the entire room was lit by a faint, ghostly blue luminescence radiating from a massive glass cylinder planted right in the center of the floor.

Inside the cylinder, suspended in a thick, gel-like fluid, floated a metallic sphere roughly the size of a human skull. It wasn’t rotating, but thin, hair-thin lines of white energy pulsed across its surface like a nervous system.

Eun-bi stopped at the entrance, her boots sliding slightly on the smooth metal grating. She pulled her glasses down, rubbed the bridge of her nose where a red dent had formed, and stared at the cylinder with wide, tired eyes.

"That’s not an unrefined crystal, and it’s not a core sovereign," Eun-bi said, her voice dropping into a flat, exhausted murmur. She didn’t even bother lifting her dead terminal anymore. "That’s an administrative relay node. A black-box terminal straight from the old Ministry high council."

Tae-woo lingered near the outer doorway, keeping his back to the wall as he scanned the dark corners of the coil room. "A black box? You mean like a flight recorder for the whole district? I thought those things were just myths whispered by data-brokers in the lower slums."

"They aren’t myths," Lilith said, her voice unusually subdued as she stepped past Eun-bi. The crimson leather of her suit made a soft, creaking sound against the cold metal floor. She didn’t crowd into Jun-ho’s space this time; instead, she kept a cautious three-foot distance, her wide crimson eyes fixed on the pulsing white lines inside the glass cylinder. "They’re execution triggers. If that node goes offline, the entire upper sector’s containment grid drops its seals. Every locked vault, every quarantined trench between here and the coast blows wide open simultaneously."

Rea moved up beside Jun-ho, her high-silk tunic shifting with a sharp rustle. She crossed her arms over her chest, her gold-and-blue eyes narrowing as she looked between the floating sphere and Jun-ho’s unreadable expression.

"The Ministry didn’t just quarantine this sector to hide a monster," Rea said, her voice sharp and steady, cutting cleanly through the low hum of the copper coils. "They locked this node down because someone on the high council tried to wipe the city’s entire ledger history. They were trying to erase the baseline metrics so the core couldn’t track their assets anymore."

Jun-ho didn’t say anything immediately. He stood motionless in front of the glass cylinder, his heavy canvas duffel bag resting on the metal grating near his heavy rubber boots. His plain gray shirt was still damp with sweat, clinging tightly to the dense, iron-hard lines of his shoulders. His left hand kept an unyielding grip around the rough black hemp wrap of The Ash Remnant, the matte blade hanging dead and silent at his side.

"They failed," Jun-ho said finally, his voice dry, quiet, and completely flat.

Lilith let out a dry, humorless chuckle, shaking her head as she glanced sideways at him. "Of course they failed, big guy. If they had succeeded, we wouldn’t be standing here breathing this scorched air right now. But that leaves us with a very messy question: what do we do with a live black-box node that’s currently wired directly into your Phase 5 frequency?"

Eun-bi turned her head sharply, looking between Jun-ho and the glass cylinder with sudden panic in her eyes. "Wait—Lilith’s right. The node is pulsing in time with your Ashen Domain’s heartbeat. If you try to smash it with the 9,200x strike weight like you did the basalt gate or the sovereign, the feedback loop won’t just clear the room. It’ll broadcast your personal core signature across every active Ministry receiver on the continent."

Tae-woo let out a low whistle, shifting his submachine gun to a tighter grip. "That means every regional garrison, every high-tier enforcer, and whatever’s left of the high council will know exactly where we are down to the square centimeter. We’ll have an entire army breathing down our necks before we can even pack our gear."

Rea didn’t look at Eun-bi or Tae-woo. She stepped half a step closer to Jun-ho, her shoulder brushing against his arm with a deliberate, heavy friction. Her voice dropped into a low, uncompromising register that brooked no argument.

"Let them come," Rea said, her golden-blue eyes flashing with a fierce, competitive light. "We cleared the coral reef, we broke the iron gate, and we deleted a level sixty sovereign in a single stroke. If the Ministry wants to send their whole army down here to argue with the ledger, let them try. We have the mass to handle it."

Lilith stepped in from his other side, her full red lips curling into a slow, dangerous smile as she looked up into Jun-ho’s dark eyes. The tension between the two women snapped like a taut wire, neither of them willing to give an inch of space next to his frame.

"She’s not wrong about our odds, big guy," Lilith murmured, her voice a sultry, low purr that hummed right against his ribs. "The real question is what *you* want to do with the node. Are we going to crack it open and drain its core essence like the rest of the vault, or are you going to let it talk to the high council?"

Jun-ho looked down at the floating metallic sphere inside the glass cylinder. The white lines pulsing across its surface suddenly sped up, matching the heavy, rhythmic thud of his own pulse beneath his skin.

He raised his left hand, lifting The Ash Remnant just an inch off the metal floor.

"We don’t crack it," Jun-ho said, his eyes fixed on the pulsing white light. "We answer it."

The hum of the copper coils didn’t rise; it dropped into a sudden, deep frequency that vibrated straight through the soles of your boots and locked your jaw in place.

The white lines pulsing across the metallic sphere inside the glass cylinder stopped twitching. They flattened out into a single, blinding ribbon of pure light that stretched from the center of the sphere straight through the glass, piercing the air until it touched the flat edge of The Ash Remnant.

Eun-bi took two stumbling steps back, her hands flying up to cover her ears as a high-pitched, metallic shriek echoed through the small circular chamber. "The frequency—it’s not broadcasting outward! It’s syncing directly with his core baseline!"

Tae-woo shouldered his submachine gun, his eyes darting frantically toward the narrow doorway. "Boss, the air pressure just dropped off a cliff. If that thing is talking to the high council network, we’ve got about ten seconds before every automated defense grid from here to the coast wakes up."

Lilith didn’t back away, but the playful, teasing smirk vanished entirely from her face. Her crimson leather suit creaked sharply as she pressed her weight harder against Jun-ho’s right side, her wide crimson eyes fixed on the ribbon of white light connecting the blade to the sphere. Her breath came in short, hot gasps against his damp sleeve.

"He’s not letting it talk to the council, little nurse," Lilith murmured, her voice tight, low, and laced with a strange, fierce respect. "Look at his grip. He’s forcing the node to read *his* ledger instead."

Rea didn’t say a single word. She wedged her shoulder deeper under Jun-ho’s left arm, her bare skin burning hot against his gray cotton shirt. Her golden-blue eyes spun in a frantic, brilliant circle, tracking the tiny fractures appearing across the surface of the glass cylinder as the immense weight of Jun-ho’s Phase 5 framework exerted its gravitational pull on the room.

Jun-ho stood completely motionless. His massive frame was planted like an iron anchor against the rising tide of pressure, his breath slow, heavy, and completely unbothered by the vacuum forming around them. His left hand kept an unbreakable, crushing hold on the rough black hemp wrap of The Ash Remnant.

"You wanted an answer," Jun-ho said, his voice dry, flat, and carrying a raw authority that cut straight through the screeching copper coils.

He didn’t swing the blade this time. He simply turned his wrist half an inch to the left, driving the edge of the metal straight down through the top of the glass cylinder.

There was no explosion. There was no shattering of glass.

The entire cylinder simply ceased to exist, collapsing inward into a point of absolute, pitch-black silence. The ribbon of white light snapped, and the black-box node dissolved into a fine mist of gray data-ash that drifted harmlessly across Jun-ho’s heavy boots.

The high-pitched shriek of the coils died away instantly, replaced by the heavy, silent gloom of the empty chamber. The red and amber warning lights across the walls flickered once, turned a clean, steady emerald green, and then went dark as the automated grid powered down for good.

Eun-bi let out a long, shuddering breath, her knees finally giving out as she slid down the metal grating until she sat flat on the floor, her clipboard clattering beside her. "The network... it didn’t broadcast. He rewrote the regional server’s root directory from the inside out."

Tae-woo let out a sharp, breathless laugh, lowering his weapon as he wiped the cold sweat from his neck. "Remind me never to play poker with the boss. He doesn’t just win the hand—he changes the rules of the casino."

Lilith let out a low, breathless purr, her fingers sliding up from Jun-ho’s arm to tangle into the damp fabric at his shoulder. She leaned her entire weight against him, her full lips parting as she looked up into his dark, unreadable eyes. "You really are a monster, big guy. A gorgeous, terrifying monster."

Rea’s golden-blue eyes flashed with fierce triumph as she pressed harder against his left side, her fingers curling tightly into his shirt. "The board is clear. The upper sector belongs to the ledger now. Tell us where we walk next, Jun-ho."

Jun-ho lowered The Ash Remnant, letting the matte blade rest flat against his thigh. He looked past the ruined glass cylinder toward the massive, open blast doors at the far end of the core room, where a long, sunlit transit railway stretched out toward the open sea.

"We go up," Jun-ho said.
