Chapter 261: 261

The sunlit transit railway stretched out for two miles across a suspended concrete viaduct, cutting straight through the thick, gray sea mist that clung to the outer cliffs. There were no tracks for a traditional train; just a wide, flat slab of magnetic rail humming with a low, blue electrical current that smelled of ozone and clean salt air.

Eun-bi scrambled up from the metal grating, hastily dusting off her gray flannel shirt and shoving her glasses back up her nose. She grabbed her portable terminal, her fingers tapping furiously against the screen.

"The railway’s local grid is live," Eun-bi called out over the hum of the magnetic track. "The system registry we just unlocked gave us an express route straight to the high-council administrative platform on the outer cape. But... there’s a problem."

Tae-woo stepped out of the circular chamber, keeping his submachine gun slung across his chest as he scanned the open-air viaduct. "What kind of problem? More Ministry cleanup crews?"

"Worse," Eun-bi muttered, her eyes widening as she stared at the flashing telemetry data. "The moment Jun-ho rewrote the root directory, it didn’t just clear our sector—it tripped an autonomous defense tripwire further up the line. Someone—or something—just claimed the administrative terminal at the end of the track."

Before Tae-woo could answer, the air above the far end of the viaduct shimmered.

It wasn’t a standard teleportation glitch or a digital projection. A sharp, freezing gale swept backward down the concrete track, instantly turning the sea mist into delicate shards of ice that pattered against the ground like glass.

Standing on the edge of the transit platform, two miles away, was a single figure.

Even from that distance, her presence dominated the entire landscape. She stood with effortless, haughty grace, wearing a floor-length military-grade trench coat made of midnight-blue silk that fluttered wildly in the cold wind, open just enough at the front to reveal a form-fitting obsidian bodysuit that traced every magnificent, voluptuous curve of her tall, striking frame. Her waist was impossibly narrow, flaring out into hips that commanded the eye, while a heavy silver ceremonial saber rested casually against her thigh.

Her hair was a stark, luminous silver-white that fell in heavy waves past her shoulders, framing a face of cold, breathtaking perfection. But what truly set her apart were her eyes—pure, glowing violet irises that burned with an arrogant, sovereign fire, staring straight down the railway line directly at Jun-ho.

[Incoming Alert: High Council Enforcer - Vanguard Commander]

[Identity: Vespera, The Frost-Veil Sovereign (Level 62)]

[Threat Level: Absolute Regional Suppression]

Lilith’s eyes narrowed instantly, her fingers tightening into fists at her sides, the crimson leather of her suit creaking in protest. A low, dangerous hiss escaped her lips as she leaned harder against Jun-ho’s right arm.

"Well, well," Lilith murmured, her voice dripping with sudden, venomous rivalry as she glared down the track at the silver-haired woman. "Looks like the high council decided to send someone with actual teeth this time. Look at her—walking around like she owns the entire continent."

Rea didn’t say a word, but the high-slashed silk of her black tunic parted wider as she tensed her legs, her gold-and-blue eyes spinning with a fierce, combative fury. She pressed her shoulder hard against Jun-ho’s left arm, her bare skin burning hot against his shirt.

"She’s not just an enforcer," Rea said, her voice dropping into a low, sharp register. "She’s carrying an imperial core artifact. Her mana density is rewriting the frost on the tracks before she even takes a step."

Down the railway line, Vespera didn’t draw her saber. She simply raised her left hand, her long, elegant fingers curving gracefully as a dense ring of floating violet ice crystals formed in the air around her shoulders. Her lips parted into a cold, mocking smile that carried clearly across the two miles of open air.

"Jun-ho," Vespera’s voice rang out, carrying the absolute weight of command, smooth and chillingly melodic. "You’ve broken enough seals today. Hand over the ledger core, and I might consider letting your little entourage die with clean lungs."

Tae-woo swallowed hard, gripping his weapon tightly. "Level sixty-two... Boss, she’s two levels higher than the core sovereign we just deleted. And she’s got the whole administrative grid backing her play."

Jun-ho didn’t flinch. He didn’t drop his duffel bag, and he didn’t blink. His dark eyes locked onto the silver-haired enforcer across the viaduct, his heavy frame standing immovable against the rising freezing gale.

His left hand tightened around the rough black hemp wrap of The Ash Remnant, the matte metal glowing with a slow, steady white fire.

"You talk too much," Jun-ho said flatly.

He took his first heavy step forward onto the magnetic transit rail, dragging both Lilith and Rea right along with him as the gap between them began to close.

The magnetic transit rail hummed beneath their boots, a deep, rhythmic vibration that carried the electric pulse of the viaduct straight up through the floorboards. Two miles ahead, Vespera didn’t move an inch. The midnight-blue silk of her floor-length trench coat snapped wildly in the freezing gale, wrapping tight against the breathtaking, voluptuous curve of her hips and framing the flawless obsidian bodysuit beneath.

Her luminous silver-white hair whipped around her shoulders like spun glass, catching the pale gray morning light and scattering it into sharp, violet-tinted prisms.

"She’s not just standing there to look pretty, big guy," Lilith murmured, her voice a low, dangerous purr right against Jun-ho’s right arm. The crimson-clad assassin kept her wide crimson eyes locked on the distant silver-haired commander, her fingers flexing against her thighs. "Look at the frost creeping along the magnetic coils. She’s freezing the entire transit line from the terminal outward. If we walk straight into that sector without breaking her grid first, our boots are going to be welded to the steel by the time we cross the halfway mark."

Rea didn’t look at Lilith. Her golden-blue eyes spun in a fast, furious circle, tracking the density of the violet ice crystals hovering in a ring around Vespera’s shoulders. The high-slashed silk of her black tunic rustled sharply against her thigh as she pressed her weight hard and possessive against Jun-ho’s left sleeve, her bare skin radiating a fierce, dry heat that fought back against the encroaching chill.

"The frost is a distraction," Rea said, her voice sharp and uncompromising. "She’s channeling the entire high-council administrative grid through that silver saber on her hip. If Jun-ho swings at her while that grid is active, the recoil won’t just test his Phase 5 frame—it’ll feedback straight into our core registers."

Eun-bi jogged up behind them, clutching her portable terminal like a shield against the freezing wind. Her glasses were completely fogged over, and she was breathing in shallow, ragged gasps. "They’re right, Jun-ho! My terminal is picking up an active lockdown signature across the entire outer cape. Vespera isn’t just a vanguard enforcer—she’s the head of the Ministry’s internal discipline division. She holds the master decryption keys for this entire quadrant!"

Tae-woo checked the receiver of his submachine gun, his knuckles stark white against the dark metal. "A discipline commander with a level sixty-two baseline and master keys? That’s not an enforcer, boss. That’s an executioner sent to wipe the slate clean because you broke their black-box node."

Jun-ho didn’t break his stride. His heavy rubber boots struck the magnetic rail with a solid, unyielding cadence that completely ignored the biting cold. His plain gray shirt was stiffening from the frost, the damp cotton freezing against his broad shoulders, but his massive frame remained as steady as an architectural pillar.

His left hand kept a firm, unchanging grip around the rough black hemp wrap of The Ash Remnant. The matte metal hung dead and silent at his side, casting no reflection against the steel rails.

"Let her talk," Jun-ho said, his voice flat, dry, and absolute.

Across the viaduct, as the distance between them narrowed to a single mile, Vespera raised her right hand. The ring of floating violet ice crystals spun faster, emitting a high-pitched, singing hum that cut cleanly through the roar of the sea wind.

"You have a heavy stride for a dead man, Jun-ho," Vespera’s voice echoed across the open air, smooth, chillingly melodic, and carrying the absolute weight of command without a single tremor of doubt. "The Ministry registry lists your core as an unranked anomaly from the lower trenches. Yet you delete a core sovereign and rewrite a high-council black box like you’re sweeping dust off a floor."

Vespera took one slow, deliberate step forward, her heavy silver ceremonial saber sliding an inch out of its scabbard with a sharp, metallic click that resonated across the entire viaduct.

"I didn’t come here to negotiate a salvage fee or buy back stolen assets," Vespera continued, her glowing violet eyes locking onto Jun-ho with an arrogant, sovereign intensity. "I came to strip that 9,200x strike weight from your bones and lock your ledger in the deep vault permanently. Do you honestly believe your frame can withstand the combined pressure of an imperial discipline grid?"

Lilith let out a low, dark laugh, her crimson lips curling into a sharp, dangerous smile as she glanced sideways at Jun-ho. "She likes the sound of her own voice almost as much as she likes her frozen toys, doesn’t she, big guy? Should I go clip her wings before she finishes her speech, or do you want to handle the talking yourself."

"Save your blades," Jun-ho said quietly, his dark eyes fixed straight ahead on Vespera’s silver hair.

He didn’t slow down. He didn’t raise his voice or check a status notification. He simply adjusted his grip on The Ash Remnant, letting the lake of cold mana behind his ribs rise just an inch higher as the distance between them shrank to five hundred meters.

"You talk too much," Jun-ho repeated, his voice carrying the dry, unyielding weight of an approaching avalanche. "Open the gate."

Vespera’s cold, breathtaking smile vanished in an instant, replaced by a sharp, lethal flash in her violet eyes as she drew her saber all the way out.
