Chapter 429: Chapter 14: Qingdao
After getting off the cable car, they strolled along the plank road that wound through the mountains. The path twisted and turned, with a steep cliff on one side and a bottomless canyon on the other. Li Xiao walked cautiously, stopping from time to time to admire the surrounding scenery. "Look, doesn’t that mountain peak look like a giant?" Li Xiao said, pointing to a distant peak. Huang Pengfei followed his gaze and nodded. "It really does. Nature is truly incredible."
As they continued walking, they arrived at a viewing platform. From there, they could look down upon one of Zhangjiajie’s iconic landmarks—the Qiankun Pillar. The Qiankun Pillar stood arrow-straight in the canyon, an imposing and majestic sight. Li Xiao and Huang Pengfei stood quietly on the platform, taking in the spectacular scenery, their hearts filled with reverence for nature.
After sightseeing for a while, they were getting hungry. They found a restaurant within the scenic area, ready to sample Zhangjiajie’s local cuisine. Zhangjiajie’s specialties include Sanxiaguo, Tujia cured meat, and Hecai. They ordered a portion of the Sanxiaguo and the Tujia cured meat. The Sanxiaguo was rich in flavor and packed with ingredients, while the Tujia cured meat was savory without being greasy, its aroma filling the air. Li Xiao ate with constant praise. "The food here in Zhangjiajie is really special. It’s so delicious," he said. Huang Pengfei also nodded. "You’re right. Every dish has a flavor that lingers."
After they had eaten their fill, they went to watch a folk performance. The show featured Tujia songs and dances, the Maogusi dance, and other traditional acts. The performers, clad in traditional ethnic costumes, sang and danced, showcasing the cultural charm of Zhangjiajie. Li Xiao and Huang Pengfei were captivated by the splendid performance, applauding and cheering for the artists. "This show really lets us experience Zhangjiajie’s unique culture. It’s fantastic," Li Xiao said. Huang Pengfei added, "It is. These folk performances are very meaningful."
After the show, they went to browse the souvenir shops in the scenic area. The stores were filled with all kinds of distinctive Zhangjiajie keepsakes, like postcards of the local scenery, wood carvings, and stone sculptures. Li Xiao bought some postcards and wood carvings to bring back as gifts for his friends and family. Huang Pengfei, meanwhile, purchased some of Zhangjiajie’s local products, such as kudzu root powder and vine tea.
Bidding farewell to the forest of unique peaks in Zhangjiajie, Li Xiao and Huang Pengfei traveled eastward, arriving in the beautiful coastal city of Qingdao.
The moment they arrived in Qingdao, Li Xiao was captivated by the fresh sea breeze and the European-style architecture. He said excitedly to Huang Pengfei, "Old Huang, this Qingdao place looks amazing. It has the sea, the sights, and great food." Gazing out at the ocean in the distance, Huang Pengfei nodded. "Yeah, it feels really vibrant."
After checking into their hotel and dropping off their luggage, the two couldn’t wait to head to the seaside. They strolled along the coastline, where the golden sand glistened under the sun and waves lapped rhythmically against the shore. Li Xiao took a deep breath, savoring the ocean air. "This sea breeze feels amazing," he said. "It really lifts your mood." Huang Pengfei smiled. "It does. I haven’t felt this relaxed in a long time."
They sat on the beach for a while, watching people frolic by the water. Children were building sandcastles, young adults were playing beach volleyball, and older folks were taking leisurely strolls. "Life here is so pleasant," Li Xiao remarked wistfully. Huang Pengfei nodded in agreement. "It’s true. Qingdao seems like a very livable city."
After their time on the beach, they headed to one of Qingdao’s landmarks: Zhanqiao Pier. The pier stretched out into the sea, ending at the Huilan Pavilion. They walked out onto it, admiring the beautiful ocean view. In the distance, boats sailed slowly over the water while seagulls soared overhead. Li Xiao took out his camera to capture the lovely scene. "This view is so beautiful," he said. "You can’t take a bad picture here; they all look like professional shots." "Yeah," Huang Pengfei agreed. "The scenery in Qingdao is genuinely charming."
By the time they left Zhanqiao Pier, they were hungry again. They found a local restaurant, ready to taste Qingdao’s culinary specialties. Qingdao boasts many delicacies, like Qingdao Beer, spicy stir-fried clams, and Spanish mackerel dumplings. They ordered a plate of spicy stir-fried clams and some Spanish mackerel dumplings, pairing them with Qingdao Beer. The clams were tender and juicy, with a savory, spicy kick, while the dumplings had thin skins and a generous, flavorful filling. Li Xiao took a sip of his beer and praised, "This Qingdao Beer really lives up to its name. It’s so crisp, with a rich malty flavor." Huang Pengfei ate with gusto. "Definitely. This food is incredible."
Once they had their fill, they made their way to the Qingdao Beer Museum. There, they learned about the history of Qingdao Beer and its brewing process. The museum showcased various pieces of antique brewing equipment and priceless historical photographs, giving them a deeper appreciation for the beer. "I had no idea Qingdao Beer had such a long history," Li Xiao remarked. "That’s incredible." "Yeah," Huang Pengfei added. "This tour has been really enlightening."
After their tour of the beer museum, they went to see a folk performance. The show included the Jiaozhou Yangge Dance, Maoqiang opera, and other local arts. The performers, dressed in colorful costumes, put on a magnificent show. Li Xiao and Huang Pengfei were captivated by the lively performance, frequently clapping and cheering for the artists. "These folk performances are so unique," Li Xiao said. "They really let you feel the cultural charm of Qingdao." Huang Pengfei nodded in agreement. "Exactly. Qingdao’s culture is so rich and vibrant."
After the show ended, they went to explore one of Qingdao’s night markets. The market was lined with stalls selling all sorts of local snacks and handicrafts. They nibbled on snacks while picking out souvenirs. Li Xiao bought some shell handicrafts and Qingdao postcards to bring back as gifts for friends and family, while Huang Pengfei purchased some of Qingdao’s local products, like dried seafood and Laoshan Green Tea.
