Chapter 430: Chapter 14-2: Harbin and Suzhou

After spending a few days in Qingdao, Li Xiao and Huang Pengfei embarked on a new journey. They looked forward to more surprises and discoveries on the road ahead.

Departing from the vibrant city of Qingdao, Li Xiao and Huang Pengfei traveled north, arriving in Ice City Harbin.

The moment they got off the train, Li Xiao was struck by Harbin’s unique European-style architecture and the frigid air. He wrapped his coat tighter around himself and said to Huang Pengfei, "Old Huang, Harbin is seriously cold, but it has so much character." Huang Pengfei also hunched his shoulders against the cold, nodding. "Yeah, the architecture is completely different from the other places we’ve been."

They arrived at their hotel, and after dropping off their luggage, they couldn’t wait to head out and experience Harbin’s charm. Their first stop was Central Avenue. The street was filled with Russian flair, and the European-style buildings on both sides made them feel as if they’d stepped into another country. Li Xiao gazed curiously at the shops lining the street; some sold Russian Matryoshka Dolls, some sold red sausage, and others sold various local snacks. He walked into a shop selling Russian Matryoshka Dolls, picked up an exquisite one, and exclaimed, "This Matryoshka doll is beautiful! The craftsmanship is so delicate." Huang Pengfei, standing beside him, remarked, "These souvenirs from Harbin make for great mementos. We should buy a few to take home."

Continuing on, they came to the Saint Sophia Cathedral. The cathedral was magnificent, its green, onion-domed roof glittering in the sunlight. Li Xiao and Huang Pengfei stood before it, quietly admiring the beautiful structure. Li Xiao remarked with a sigh, "This cathedral is truly spectacular. You can really feel the sanctity of this place." Huang Pengfei added, "Yeah, you don’t see this kind of European architecture very often in China."

After exploring Central Avenue and Saint Sophia Cathedral, they had worked up an appetite. They found a local restaurant, ready to taste Harbin’s specialties. Harbin boasts many delicacies, like red sausage, crispy sweet and sour pork, and a stir-fry of potato, eggplant, and green pepper. They ordered the red sausage and the crispy sweet and sour pork. The sausage was rich and flavorful with a firm texture, while the pork was crispy on the outside, tender on the inside, and perfectly sweet and sour. Li Xiao couldn’t stop praising it as he ate. "This Harbin food is fantastic," he said. "It’s so distinctive." Huang Pengfei nodded in agreement. "You’re right. Every dish is unforgettable."

Full and content, they made their way to the Ice and Snow World. It was a fairytale world built from ice and snow, with all kinds of lifelike ice and snow sculptures that made them feel as if they had entered an icy kingdom. Li Xiao stared in excitement at the exquisite ice sculptures, snapping photo after photo. "This Ice and Snow World is so beautiful!" he said. "It’s like a dream." Huang Pengfei, also captivated by the scenery, added, "Yeah, these ice and snow sculptures are absolutely spectacular."

At the Ice and Snow World, they also tried some winter activities like ice skating and sledding. Li Xiao and Huang Pengfei fully immersed themselves in the fun, feeling like they were kids again. Li Xiao laughed and said to Huang Pengfei, "This Ice and Snow World is so much fun! We’re getting a real taste of the northern winter experience." Huang Pengfei agreed, "You’re right. This trip to Harbin was definitely worth it."

After their visit to the Ice and Snow World, they went to see a Russian song and dance show. The performers, dressed in gorgeous costumes, put on a spectacular show. Li Xiao and Huang Pengfei were swept up in the passionate performance, applauding and cheering for the artists. Li Xiao said, "This show really gave us a feel for the charm of Russian culture. It was fantastic!" Huang Pengfei nodded in agreement. "Yeah, Harbin’s culture is so rich and vibrant."

After the show, they went to explore Harbin’s night market. The market stalls were filled with all sorts of local snacks and handicrafts. They sampled the food as they picked out souvenirs. Li Xiao bought some Russian chocolate and Harbin postcards to give to friends and family back home. Huang Pengfei, meanwhile, bought some of Harbin’s local specialties, like black wood ear mushrooms and hazelnuts.

After spending a few days in Harbin, Li Xiao and Huang Pengfei once again set out on a new journey. They looked forward to more surprises and discoveries on the road ahead.

Leaving the frozen landscapes of Harbin behind, Li Xiao and Huang Pengfei traveled south, arriving in the graceful and elegant city of Suzhou.

The moment they arrived in Suzhou, Li Xiao was captivated by the city’s tranquility and elegance. He said to Huang Pengfei, "Old Huang, there’s such a poetic atmosphere to this place." Huang Pengfei looked at the quaint, classical architecture along the streets and nodded. "Yeah. It feels like every plant and tree here has its own unique charm."

They arrived at their hotel, and after dropping off their luggage, they couldn’t wait to go explore Suzhou’s famous gardens. Their first stop was Zhuozheng Garden. This classical Jiangnan garden was centered around water, with pavilions and towers artfully arranged amidst lush flowers and trees. Li Xiao felt like he was strolling through a beautiful painting. He sighed in admiration, "This Zhuozheng Garden is unbelievably beautiful. Every single view is intoxicating." Huang Pengfei added, "Yeah, the ancient designers were true masters."

Inside Zhuozheng Garden, they admired the various sights: exquisite pavilions, winding covered walkways, and tranquil ponds. Standing on a stone bridge, Li Xiao gazed at the lotus flowers in the pond and said, "These lotuses are so beautiful. Rising from the mud, yet remaining unstained." Huang Pengfei smiled. "That’s just how Suzhou’s gardens are. Every corner is filled with poetry."

After leaving Zhuozheng Garden, they went to Huqiu. Huqiu is one of Suzhou’s most iconic landmarks, a hill topped with ancient temples and a pagoda. Li Xiao and Huang Pengfei climbed the path up the hill, admiring the surrounding scenery. When they reached the base of the Huqiu Tower, they looked up at the ancient structure, feeling the weight of its history. "This Huqiu Tower is so magnificent," Li Xiao said. "It’s still standing tall after weathering so many years." Huang Pengfei added, "Yeah. It’s a true testament to Suzhou’s history."

After touring Huqiu, they had worked up an appetite again. They found a local restaurant to try some of Suzhou’s famous cuisine. Suzhou has many delicacies, such as Squirrel-Shaped Mandarin Fish, Yangcheng River Crab, and Suzhou Cake. They ordered the fish and some of the cakes. The Squirrel-Shaped Mandarin Fish was crispy on the outside and tender on the inside, with a delicious sweet and sour flavor, while the Suzhou Cakes were soft and chewy, sweet but not overly so. Li Xiao couldn’t stop praising the food. "The food in Suzhou is incredible!" he said. "It’s so memorable." Huang Pengfei nodded. "You’re right. Every dish has its own distinct character."

Full and content, they made their way to Suzhou’s Pingjiang Road. Pingjiang Road was a historic Old Street, full of the characteristic charm of a Jiangnan Water Village and lined with ancient homes and shops. They strolled along the street, soaking in Suzhou’s traditional culture. Li Xiao ducked into a teahouse, ordered a cup of Biluochun Tea, and sat by the window to admire the view. "The lifestyle in Suzhou is so relaxing," he said. "It really puts you at ease." Huang Pengfei smiled. "Yeah, this is the perfect place to unwind."

After wandering along Pingjiang Road for a while, they went to watch a Suzhou storytelling and ballad singing performance. The performers, dressed in traditional attire, sang moving stories in the soft, melodic Wu dialect. Li Xiao and Huang Pengfei were captivated by the beautiful singing, completely immersed in Suzhou’s cultural atmosphere. "This Suzhou storytelling is so charming," Li Xiao said. "You can really feel the depth of Suzhou’s cultural heritage." Huang Pengfei nodded in agreement. "Yeah, the culture here is so rich and colorful."

After the performance, they went to explore Suzhou’s night market. The market stalls were filled with all sorts of local snacks and handicrafts. They sampled the food as they picked out souvenirs. Li Xiao bought some of Suzhou’s famous silk and embroidery to give to friends and family back home. Huang Pengfei, meanwhile, bought some of the local specialty teas and pastries.

Bidding farewell to picturesque Suzhou, Li Xiao and Huang Pengfei continued their journey south, arriving in the vibrant, sun-drenched city of Sanya.
