Chapter 52: Spoils of War

Chapter 52: Chapter 52: Spoils of War

If it weren’t for the fact that No. 1’s mechanical pupils were still moving, Bena would have thought he was dead.

Bena anxiously checked No. 1’s condition, his eyes filled with worry.

"Quick, No. 3, use Body Repair!" Bena shouted urgently.

Hearing Bena’s shout, No. 3 immediately dropped his weapon and ran toward No. 1.

The next moment, the five fingers on No. 3’s left hand emitted a blue glow. The fingers, which had looked no different from a normal person’s, transformed into five different repair tools.

Bena and No. 2 didn’t stay idle either. They quickly searched the surrounding area for any parts that might have been knocked off.

No. 3 knelt down. His fingers, covered in a blue light, gently touched No. 1’s body and immediately began precise repair work.

As No. 3’s fingers continuously changed shape, each touch was accompanied by a part snapping back into place or a circuit being repaired.

No. 1’s mechanical pupils gradually regained more of their vitality, and his bodily functions were also recovering bit by bit.

Thirty minutes passed quickly.

No. 1, who had been heavily damaged, was finally pieced back together.

However, the previous damage had been too severe. Even after the temporary fix, No. 1 had only regained his mobility. If he were to fight again, he would probably need to return to the shelter for a complete overhaul.

"No. 1, how are you feeling now?" Bena asked with concern.

"I... I’m much better, Bena." No. 1’s voice came through his speaker. Although it was still faint, it was much clearer than before.

Seeing that No. 1 was out of danger, Bena breathed a sigh of relief.

After all, No. 1 had been injured saving him, and he didn’t want his teammate to die because of it.

Only then did Bena have time to inspect the corpse of the mutated gray wolf.

He examined it carefully, his expression confirming his suspicions.

Aside from the gunshot wounds they had inflicted and the sword wounds from No. 1, the mutated gray wolf’s body had other, older scars.

These old wounds indicated that the mutated gray wolf had been in a fierce battle before encountering them. Judging by the degree of healing, the injuries hadn’t been sustained too long ago.

Bena immediately had No. 2 report the current situation to the Administrator.

...

「Inside the shelter.」

Watching the feedback from the battle, Ye Yun broke out in a cold sweat.

But when he saw No. 1 finally get repaired, he breathed a sigh of relief.

Ye Yun muttered to himself:

’There was a prior battle... that means there are likely still enemies nearby.’

’Should we continue exploring? Or take our loot and leave?’

To be safe, the obvious choice was to take the loot and leave.

After all, No. 1 was injured, leaving only three combat-capable members on the team. And even then, those three would have to divert some of their attention to protecting the wounded No. 1.

However, based on the situation on the ground, there was likely a second battlefield nearby.

The mutated gray wolf was so heavily injured that it must have left a significant trail. Finding that battlefield shouldn’t be too difficult.

Ye Yun quickly tapped out his next command on his wristband.

[Have No. 1 stay put. The other three will follow the mutated gray wolf’s tracks for clues and see if they can find any useful loot. Retreat immediately if you encounter danger.]

Before he could send the message, the assessment system appeared again.

[Assessment Type: Search]

[Assessing search risk...]

[Search Type: Tracking]

[Assessment: White-quality item probability 39.1%, Green-quality item probability 34.7%, Blue-quality item probability: 15.205%, Purple-quality item probability: 0.005%, Risk factor: 0.002%]

Seeing the risk factor was only 0.002%, Ye Yun didn’t hesitate and immediately hit the send button. Clearly, this tracking mission wouldn’t be very dangerous.

...

Although Bena had his doubts upon receiving Ye Yun’s message, he still faithfully carried out the Administrator’s command.

Bena said to No. 1, "No. 1, you stay here for now. We’re going to search along the mutated gray wolf’s trail.

If we run into danger, we’ll retreat immediately."

No. 1 nodded. "Understood, Bena. You all be careful."

No. 2 immediately activated his enhanced observation, and the three of them began searching forward, following the trail left by the mutated gray wolf.

At first, the trio’s pace was relatively slow. But as they went deeper, the tracks on the ground became more and more obvious, and they picked up speed.

They followed the tracks carefully until they arrived at a ravaged battlefield.

This was clearly the place where the mutated gray wolf had fought its intense battle.

The scene was gruesome. The air was thick with the smell of blood and the acrid scent of gunpowder.

The ground was littered with signs of battle, including twisted metal fragments, shattered weapons, and several human corpses.

One of the corpses was missing half its head; the rest had clearly been eaten by the mutated gray wolf.

The wounds on the bodies showed they had suffered extremely violent attacks in battle. The blood had dried to a dark red.

The previous battle had clearly been intense. The gear and weapons on the corpses were almost completely destroyed and had no salvage value.

Bena scanned the area, his brow furrowing slightly.

It seemed there was nothing useful at the scene.

Just as Bena was feeling disappointed, No. 2’s eyes suddenly caught sight of something unusual.

He pointed to the edge of the battlefield, where three off-road motorcycles were half-buried under rubble and weeds.

"Look over there. Those three motorcycles are pretty far from the battlefield. They probably weren’t affected by the fight."

No. 2’s voice broke the silence.

The three of them quickly approached the off-road motorcycles.

They found that although the bikes were covered in dust and had some scratches, both light and deep, their overall structure still looked solid.

Not only were the bikes equipped with extra protective armor, but their tires had also been swapped for heavy-duty, blast-proof ones more suited for complex terrain. They had clearly been specially modified.

Bena immediately returned to the battlefield. After a bit of searching, he finally pulled three keys from the corpses.

Bena hurried back to the off-road motorcycles with the keys.

He tried them one by one and quickly found the correct key for each of the three bikes.

With a roar of engines, the three motorcycles started up one by one. Although they looked a bit rugged, their performance seemed quite good.

"Looks like our luck hasn’t run out yet. These bikes still work."

Bena said to No. 2 and No. 3, a satisfied smile appearing on his face.

No. 3 checked the bikes’ fuel tanks and confirmed there was enough fuel for them to get back to the shelter.

"Fuel’s full. We can use these to make a quick getaway."
