  1. Experimental Area

Lin Ye sat up in bed and casually picked up the water glass from the table beside him. Then he quietly moved up next to the door.

He pressed his ear against the wall and listened to the sounds in the corridor.

Amid the piercing alarm, he could faintly hear muffled screams.

The screams were some distance from the dorm, which reassured Lin Ye a little.

Just then, he suddenly felt something move behind him.

Lin Ye immediately threw himself onto the floor. A thick dark shadow swept over his head. If he had reacted just a moment slower, it would have pierced his chest.

Bang!

The shadow smashed through the wall opposite.

Lin Ye scrambled back into the bedroom. He wanted to find a weapon, but the only thing he found in the drawer was a fruit knife.

As he searched for a weapon, he kept an eye on the dark shadow that had attacked him.

It was a blood-red tentacle reaching out from the toilet. Along the side facing Lin Ye, it had split open into a series of gashes, each one containing a human eyeball.

The eyeballs stared at Lin Ye, their gazes moving along with the tentacle.

Lin Ye held the fruit knife in a reverse grip. Even without his memories, he knew this tentacle was deeply abnormal.

The tentacle pointed its tip at Lin Ye, then drew back slightly.

Lin Ye immediately realized what it was about to do. He didn’t move carelessly, but tensed his body and watched the tip of the tentacle.

The moment the tentacle attacked, Lin Ye suddenly moved to the right and swung the fruit knife diagonally forward with a backhand. He didn’t know where the tentacle would strike, but once it launched its attack, it might already be too late.

Bang!

The tentacle grazed Lin Ye’s left shoulder. He slashed its epidermis, leaving a shallow wound.

Lin Ye didn’t take the opportunity to attack the tentacle. Instead, he dashed out of the dorm as fast as he could. He had checked the toilet earlier and found nowhere to hide anything, so the tentacle had probably crawled out of the drain.

That meant it was unlikely to have come specifically to attack him. In other words, the drains were probably already packed with these things.

If he stayed in the bedroom, more tentacles might crawl out of the drain and attack him.

“Help!”

As soon as Lin Ye rushed out of the dorm, he came across a researcher being dragged into a room. Two tentacles were stuck into him, and as he sprayed blood, he cried out desperately for help.

Before Lin Ye could rush over to help, the researcher was dragged into the room.

‘What on earth is happening here? Is this also connected to my amnesia?’

Lin Ye fled along the corridor and out of the residential area. Tentacles occasionally shot out from rooms to attack him, but he dodged them all.

Beyond the residential area was a large common area. It was in utter chaos, with mutilated human corpses scattered everywhere.

‘Where should I go? I can’t go to the experimental area. That must be the source of the abnormal incident, and there could be all kinds of terrifying things there.’

Lin Ye could only guess the locations of a few important areas. He didn’t know where the exit was.

‘Forget it. I should find someone first and learn what’s going on.’

Lin Ye found a pistol and several spare magazines on the corpses. When he picked up the pistol, he felt a strange sense of familiarity.

“Don’t move!”

An armed squad spotted Lin Ye. One of its members pointed a gun at his head.

“I’m just a researcher. What happened here?”

Lin Ye raised his hands. These people looked like they were probably normal.

“We don’t know either. We’re heading to the experimental area to check things out. You can follow us, or find somewhere to hide.”

The team member studied Lin Ye for a few moments before lowering his rifle.

“I want to follow you. There’s nowhere safe here.”

Lin Ye wanted to take a look at the experimental area. Only after gathering enough information could he figure out what to do next.

“Then keep up.”

The squad continued toward the experimental area. Lin Ye followed behind them, constantly watching his surroundings.

Soon, they entered the experimental area. There wasn’t a single person along the way, nor even a corpse. The only thing they could see was bloodstains everywhere.

The instruments inside the laboratories were still running normally. The armed squad passed through one corridor after another, finally stopping outside a laboratory.

This laboratory was different from the others. It had no small window, only a seemingly very sturdy metal door.

The squad leader swiped an access card to unlock the metal door. Beyond it was pitch-black; all they could make out was a dim corridor.

Lin Ye suddenly had a bad feeling, as if this metal door didn’t lead to a laboratory but to some extremely dangerous place.

He wanted to stay outside, but a team member pulled him in.

The metal door closed automatically, trapping them in a completely dark, unknown area.

Lin Ye shook off the hand gripping him. That team member had acted strangely.

He tried to open the metal door, but couldn’t feel anything behind him.

The surroundings were utterly silent. He couldn’t even hear anyone breathing, as if all the armed personnel had disappeared.

Lin Ye didn’t move carelessly. He crouched down and felt around the floor.

He had only searched half a circle when he touched a human hand.

The hand grabbed his right hand tightly, stopping him from pulling it away.

Lin Ye didn’t resist. It was, after all, a normal human hand. Humans might not be reliable, but they were still a safer bet than a monster.

Seeing that Lin Ye wasn’t struggling, the owner of the hand loosened their grip. Then they opened Lin Ye’s palm and traced a few strokes on it.

“Who are you?”

Seeing that the other person was communicating this way, Lin Ye didn’t speak. Instead, he communicated in the same manner.

“A researcher who came in from outside. What happened here?”

“An abnormal incident related to the research project.”

“What do I need to know?”

“You don’t have the required clearance. I can’t tell you.”

“How do I get out?”

“You can’t, unless you can resolve the anomalous phenomena. But that’s already impossible.”

“I’ll probably die here. Even the dead can’t know the relevant information?”

“No.”

“...Then what are we supposed to do now? Just wait here to die together?”

“We’re currently in different states and locations. We need to find the correct state and location first, then we can look for a way to resolve the abnormal incident.”

“...If you’re not going to tell me what’s happening, there’s no point in continuing this conversation.”

“I’m not lying to you... We aren’t in a normal state or location right now. We’re communicating through common sense, but that common sense is extremely fragile. If you become aware of your own situation, you could die here very soon.”
