Great, It's the Pervy Neighbor. We're Doomed

Chapter 964: Lawyer Chen Sanshui’s Crisis

  • Next Chapter

Lawyer Chen Sanshui frantically rubbed his eyes.

He kept thinking he must have seen something wrong, but when he opened his eyes again, he pinched his exposed left arm hard with his right hand.

That was right, this wasn’t a dream.

Someone had really been murdered.

Yet Chen Sanshui didn’t call the police. He just stood there watching.

Before long, he saw several mysterious men arrive at the place where the three people had died.

They collected the corpses in body bags.

Afterward, they brought tools and a water pipe, then washed down that patch of concrete.

Their movements were unbelievably quick and practiced.

When they finally left again,

Chen Sanshui stepped onto the concrete and looked all around, but couldn’t see the slightest sign that a bloody murder had taken place there.

“What exactly happened here...”

Chen Sanshui was standing there when he suddenly sensed something and looked behind him.

Fortunately, he did.

He immediately lunged forward,

dodging a potentially fatal attack.

Behind him, a man gripping a wooden baseball bat was creeping up on him, trying to catch him by surprise.

But, by some stroke of luck, Chen Sanshui turned around in time and avoided the attack.

As soon as he dodged, Chen Sanshui planted both hands on the ground, pushed himself up, and pointed at the man with the baseball bat as he shouted,

“It’s you?! You broke into my home in the middle of the night to do me harm?!”

Chen Sanshui recognized him. This was the dangerous man who had broken into his home that night with a man in a purple shirt!!!!

The man holding the baseball bat was Zhang Yao. He gave a cold laugh and said nothing, merely tightening his grip on the bat.

“What have I ever done to you? Why are you doing this to me?”

Chen Sanshui demanded.

Zhang Yao continued to sneer.

Chen Sanshui stared at Zhang Yao, bewildered. Then it suddenly dawned on him.

He asked uncertainly, “You wouldn’t be trying to avenge your sister, would you?!”

Chen Sanshui couldn’t quite remember.

He had once handled a lawsuit, representing a small-business owner.

The man had taken a recent female college graduate who worked for his company to a drinking party.

After getting her drunk, he took her to a hotel and raped her.

In the end, Chen Sanshui had represented the small-business owner in court and gotten him acquitted.

The rape charges hadn’t stuck.

Although he’d won the case, Chen Sanshui had also run into trouble once.

The female college graduate’s brother had flown into a rage and chased him with a knife.

Chen Sanshui had suffered minor injuries, but in the end, he had also managed to get the brother sent to prison for several years.

Was this him?

Chen Sanshui couldn’t remember.

He had handled at least a hundred cases like this, helping small-time business owners get rape charges dismissed.

He’d also had people come after him when they lost their cases.

He really couldn’t remember.

Zhang Yao heard what Chen Sanshui had said.

He thought to himself that he was alone in the world, so where would he have a sister?

Then he suddenly wondered if this guy had mistaken him for someone else.

Might as well play along.

“That’s right! I’m here to avenge my sister!!!!”

Zhang Yao gritted his teeth viciously.

Hearing that, Chen Sanshui immediately relaxed.

It was good to know the reason. The worst kind was not knowing why someone was after you.

He said calmly, “It’s been so many years.”

“You’re still thinking of getting revenge on me? Do you want to go back to prison?”

Chen Sanshui had no idea what this supposed sister had to do with this lawyer, but that condescending tone,

and those words about going to prison,

immediately irritated Zhang Yao, because he really had been to prison.

Chen Sanshui continued, “Let’s put this behind us. Go home and live your life, and stop thinking about getting revenge on me. You’re still young. Don’t throw your future away.”

“I keep my word. I won’t come after you either.”

“But if you still won’t let this go, I’m sorry, if I send you to prison again this time, it might not be for just a few years. It could be more than ten. Think carefully. Do your family want you to go back inside for a second time?”

Zhang Yao put on a hesitant expression.

Seeing that, Chen Sanshui thought there was a chance. “Besides, why are you trying to get revenge on me?”

“I’m just a lawyer. It’s my job to represent the small-business owner. He hired me, so of course I had to help him win. If you hired me, I’d help you win too.”

“So why not go after that small-business owner for revenge? Why come after me?”

“You people are always like this, unable to see the real issue. Every time I win a case, you come after me. I hardly ever see anyone go after the person they should be going after!”

Though Zhang Yao still didn’t know the whole story, he had more or less guessed what was going on. “Isn’t it because you help those small-business owners and rich people fight dirty cases?”

“You know full well what vile things they’ve done, yet you still help them out!!!!”

Chen Sanshui’s shoulders slumped. He shook his head, laughing helplessly.

“I told you, I’m a lawyer. It’s my job to help the people who hire me win their cases.”

“As for justice? Helping villains?”

“That’s for the police and judges to worry about.”

“Why should I, a lawyer, have to worry about justice?”

“My job is to win cases, no matter whether the client is good or what people call bad.”

“Understand?”

Chen Sanshui only cared about money. As long as he was paid enough, he didn’t give a damn about justice.

“Don’t you feel even the slightest bit of guilt?”

Zhang Yao gritted his teeth.

Chen Sanshui fell silent for a moment.

He’d really wanted to say, What do I have to feel guilty about?

I win the case, take the money, buy a house and a car, and live it up. I’ve won at life.

But he knew he couldn’t say that now, so instead he said, “I do, but there’s nothing I can do about it.”

As he said that, his head once again turned behind him of its own accord.

When he turned, he saw a man in a purple shirt creeping up on him. He didn’t know when the man had arrived, but he was copying the first one and trying to catch him by surprise.

But this time, too, Chen Sanshui spotted him in advance.

He dodged the attack.

“Hey, do you have eyes in the back of your head? You’ve dodged both ambushes!”

The Purple-Shirted Man was holding a baseball bat too, but his was made of metal.

He exclaimed in surprise after his ambush failed.

Chen Sanshui’s mouth twitched.

Why did it feel like he had eyes in the back of his head?

It was because he’d won cases against too many people and been targeted for revenge so often that he’d developed this instinct the hard way.

“I remember now. Are you the son of that old couple?”

Chen Sanshui said to the Purple-Shirted Man.

The Purple-Shirted Man had been hiding nearby and listening the whole time, so he knew Chen Sanshui had probably mistaken him for someone else again.

He replied, “No.”

Chen Sanshui thought for a moment, then said, “Then are you the one whose child was bitten to death by a dog?”

The Purple-Shirted Man’s mouth twitched. “No.”

Chen Sanshui asked, “Then are you the one from the countryside, whose whole family was beaten into a vegetative state and seriously injured by your neighbor over a land dispute?”

The Purple-Shirted Man sneered. “You son of a bitch! You finally remembered!!!!”
