Gun of Ashes
Chapter 1412: Retirement and Reemployment_2
“Wh… Why is that?”
Liya didn’t understand. She had worked so hard to make everything the best it could be for this. She thought she would earn Lawrence’s recognition, but in the end, it was like this.
She tried very hard not to let any emotional tremors show, but she couldn’t help feeling a wave of disappointment.
“This world is a grand performance, a bustling stage!”
Lawrence spread his hands, his aged voice full of emotion.
“Everyone is playing different roles in the performance, protagonists, antagonists, main characters, supporting ones… or perhaps spectators.”
He reached out, gently stroking Liya’s head, as if comforting her.
“Are you saying this isn’t my role?” Liya asked.
Lawrence nodded, affirming her statement.
“Yes, on this stage, there are already too many monsters. There is no need for new ones.”
“But…”
“You also have your role, your performance, Liya.”
“What is it then?”
Liya asked, unclear about what she, as a mere mortal, could do in this insane performance.
It was Orthodoxy that had given her everything she had now and also plunged her into such a contradictory vortex.
“How about being a spectator?”,
Lawrence thought it over, then added, “Of course, it’s a bit different from what we usually refer to as a spectator; you’re not sitting below the stage but accompanying us.”
He had an epiphany, saying further.
“Yes, that’s it. This is the performance of angels and devils. I think I need a mortal as a spectator, recording all of this. You will journey with us, and the end of our war will determine your fate.”
Having said all this, Lawrence looked at Liya and asked.
“What do you think about this?”
…
Red Falcon lay on Lorenzo’s bed, staring at the ceiling where posters overlapped one after another. To be honest, Lorenzo had pasted them in a somewhat artistic manner, like a blooming flower, though each petal was a strange poster with weird slogans.
He had stayed here for a day, and even though he slept on the sofa, it was much better than being homeless.
Perhaps out of boredom, by the next day Red Falcon began pestering Lorenzo constantly, like a curious dog looking for gaps to squeeze into. Now, he was so bored he started reading the posters, which led him into another train of thought.
“What do you think I should do if I actually retire?”
Red Falcon muttered to himself.
“I’ve been so idle these days, would I not go crazy with boredom once I truly retire? But besides slaying demons, I seem to have no other skills… Yet, if asked to return to slay demons, I’d prefer boredom.”
Surprisingly, Red Falcon usually had a very clear self-awareness. This guy was incredibly lucid, yet sometimes under that clarity, he harbored strange expectations that led Red Falcon’s thoughts to always be peculiar.
“Do you have any suggestions for a demon hunter trying to find new employment, Lorenzo?”
Red Falcon turned over, propped his head and legs up, looking towards Lorenzo at the desk.
This guy opened a thick book, scribbling over it, and whatever he was doing, Red Falcon tried to peek but would get beaten for it.
There’s no choice; Red Falcon really couldn’t defeat Lorenzo, so he lay honestly to one side.
“Fisherman. I see you quite like fishing, don’t you?”
Upon hearing Lorenzo’s suggestion, Red Falcon sighed.
“Lorenzo, you don’t understand the essence of fishing.”
“Then… bookstore owner? You could have all the reasons to read endlessly.”
Lorenzo thought of Red Falcon’s other hobby and suggested.
“Hmm, this sounds quite nice, though it feels… too monotonous?” Red Falcon imagined himself as a bookstore owner, “It seems something is missing?”
“Missing what?”
Red Falcon frowned deeply, pondering for a long time, then he had an epiphany.
“A bookstore owner’s wife!”
Lorenzo stopped his work, slowly turned his head, and looked at Red Falcon as if he was trash, his gaze sharp and easily wounding Red Falcon’s fragile heart.
“Do you have any opinions? Hah! Do you think I effortlessly swapped through seven colleagues a week at Purification Mechanism! Office romance can’t develop, okay!”
Red Falcon shouted, grateful for the high mortality rate and never-ending tasks at Purification Mechanism. Lucky Red Falcon had never experienced the things that normal people have long realized.
Lorenzo ignored him, contacting Blue Jade, as soon as there was a vacancy at Purification Mechanism, Lorenzo would throw Red Falcon out without hesitation.
But speaking of which…
Lorenzo looked at another page in the book, where photos were attached.
These were photos Lorenzo had taken from an old album during his days off, akin to writing a diary, jotting words under photos he wanted to express.
Under his watch, another photo revealed itself, a group photo from Gaulunaro. Lorenzo saw a long-lost face in the corner.
“If you’re finding boredom, you can work as an orderly.”
Lorenzo abruptly said.
“Orderly? No, no, I can’t tend to patients.”
Red Falcon waved his hands quickly, he couldn’t handle such tasks.
“No, I meant for children. You won’t need to bandage their wounds, just play with them when there’s nothing else to do. This job should be easy for you and not boring.”
“Play with kids?” Red Falcon seriously considered, “Sounds somewhat interesting… what’s up?”
“You might not believe it, but I’m an orphanage director.”
Lorenzo commented in a timely manner.
“Hmm, I’ve heard something about that.” Red Falcon recalled it mentioned by someone, albeit long ago, a detail he barely remembered.
“Though called a director, you know I can’t manage such tasks, so I delegated it to Mrs. Van Rudd. She’s the director now.”
“Oh, oh, oh, so your landlord ended up there?”
Red Falcon never bothered asking about Lorenzo’s life; he didn’t say, so Red Falcon didn’t ask.
“Yes, but she’s also old. She’ll likely retire soon. If you’re willing, you can take over as the boss there.”
When hearing ‘director’, Red Falcon’s emotions didn’t change much, but once ‘boss’ was mentioned, his eyes noticeably changed.
“That good?”
Red Falcon asked skeptically.
“What else? What’s this called… brothers in arms!”
At this point, Lorenzo bonded with Red Falcon like brothers, and with a meaningful tone, added.
“By the way, I left you a surprise there.”
“Surprise?”
Red Falcon looked at Lorenzo suspiciously, feeling the warmth suddenly from this guy, which seemed fishy.
“How could you doubt it? Have I ever deceived you?” Lorenzo protested loudly.
“Although… you haven’t, why do I feel compelled to retort?”
Red Falcon felt increasingly uneasy, sure that Lorenzo must be scheming something.
He lay back down, Lorenzo’s bed was terribly rigid, no idea how the guy fell asleep comfortably. Looking at the posters on the ceiling, there were a few places that intrigued Red Falcon, wanting to visit, only for Lorenzo to mention some got destroyed in the storm.
“Hey, Lorenzo, would you get bored living this dull life for long?”
Red Falcon curiously asked. Lorenzo paused momentarily, then replied.
“No, only when you delve into Hell do you realize how precious this boredom is.”
Lorenzo said no more, he understood very well that everyone yearned for extending this dull life, yet darkness inevitably approaches, unable to escape.
Red Falcon let out a long sigh, then noticed snowflakes drifting from the window, exclaiming.
“Hey hey hey! It’s snowing!”
