Gun of Ashes
Chapter 1414: Fabricated Life_2
“Okay, okay, I know you won’t say anything, after all, it’s part of the ‘creed,’ erased, things I shouldn’t remember, but I still have a question for you.”
Shao Liangxi hesitated a bit here, the issue had been bothering her for too long, so much that she had recently started having nightmares.
She was standing on that golden lake, and soon the lake beneath her feet became restless, followed by a roaring fire that devoured her.
“In my memory, that golden lake, is it real?”
It’s a terrible feeling, once you notice the first flaw, you’ll start to doubt everything in your life, realizing it’s all composed of countless flaws, formed by one illusion after another, shaky and unstable.
“I don’t know.”
This time Shao Liangye finally spoke. He had thought about this day coming, but it was supposed to be Left Garrison explaining all this to her, yet now it had fallen on him, catching him off guard.
He sighed, looking extremely exhausted, such matters, come to think of it, were truly troublesome.
“Then you remember, don’t you, that golden lake.”
Shao Liangxi asked again, usually she could play dumb and avoid thinking about these matters, but after experiencing these things in the western world, Shao Liangxi had a vague premonition that everything was about to end, and if she didn’t clear it up now, she might never have the chance to know.
“Yeah, the golden lake, where we once grew and trained.”
Shao Liangye’s words carried no emotion.
“Is it real, or is it another false… even ‘Shao Liangxi’ is false?”
Doubts followed one after another, making Shao Liangxi feel an unprecedented unease.
“You know the creed, blindly believe in it, only this way can you avoid the self-destruction of doubt,” Shao Liangye said.
Situations filled with doubt like Shao Liangxi’s have appeared among the anonymous before, so they had to blindly believe in the creed, avoiding thinking too much, stubbornly executing the orders at hand.
“But…”
Shao Liangye’s words paused, he felt this was too cruel, that he shouldn’t be so indifferent, whether him or Shao Liangxi, they are both living people.
“You can wait until all this is over, Shao Liangxi.”
Shao Liangye said, and a glimmer of light rose in his eyes, this was not only persuading Shao Liangxi but also himself.
“Once all this is over, we can return to Jiuxia together, no matter your memory… and that golden lake, whether it’s real or false, we will find the answers there.”
This time leaving Jiuxia, Shao Liangye felt that the experiences of these few months were almost more terrifying and bewildering than everything he had gone through in the first half of his life.
Plus Left Garrison’s departure, he now seemed vulnerable, unsure of what to do.
“Zuo Tang…”
Shao Liangye thought of the current leader of the anonymous, he only knew Zuo Tang wasn’t dead, but after the storm, Shao Liangye hadn’t seen him again, unclear about what this guy was actually doing.
He might be sad, or might not have any emotions at all, Shao Liangye hadn’t communicated much with Zuo Tang, just roughly knowing about him and Left Garrison’s relationship.
Shao Liangye thought he should have a good talk with him, not only about what to do next, but also about Left Garrison, Shao Liangxi, and that golden lake…
Just then, the door was pushed open, a head poking in stealthily.
Rod looked like a thief, cautiously scanning the room before pushing the door open, holding a stack of chopped wood.
“I brought back some wood.”
Rod glanced at Shao Liangxi, then at Shao Liangye, completely forgetting all experiences with the two, his expression showing slight nervousness.
“Hey! Rod!”
Shao Liangxi suddenly got up, wrapped in a blanket, walking directly towards Rod.
“Ah ah ah!”
Rod let out innumerable screams, like playing hide-and-seek, walking around the central Shao Liangye, throwing the wood near the fireplace before retreating quickly, but he was evidently a step too slow, getting caught by Shao Liangxi.
“Oh, why are you so shy?”
Shao Liangxi deliberately teased Rod, hugging him tightly, like a close brotherly bond.
But for Rod, it was somewhat awkward torture, he always felt he’d seen Shao Liangxi somewhere, but couldn’t remember no matter what, he should be very excited about these visitors from Jiuxia, but facing the even more excited Shao Liangxi, Rod felt a bit intimidated.
Supposedly he should be the one observing the people from Jiuxia, now it seemed the situation was reversed.
“Please… wait a moment!”
Rod’s voice whimpered.
It was uncertain whether Shao Liangxi was carefree, or extremely adept at this kind of performance, the pressure and confusion just now vanished, as if she had always been this carefree.
At another time, Shao Liangye might have breathed a sigh of relief, but this time, he felt no reduction in pressure, for the first time, he couldn’t fully see through Shao Liangxi, unsure if she was truly naive or merely pretending.
“Wait a moment!”
Rod shouted, seeming to shock Shao Liangxi, pulling him out from the torturous Hell, leaning against the side, speaking with slight confusion.
“Someone came by and delivered a letter just now.”
“A letter?”
Shao Liangxi glanced at Shao Liangye, “For you?”
As a long-distance traveler, she didn’t think in this unfamiliar western world, there would be anyone writing to her.
“Yeah, seems to be from the Stuart family.”
Rod said, pulling out a letter from his pocket, the envelope stamped with the Stuart family’s sword and shield crest.
“Stuart?”
Shao Liangye stood up, they hadn’t interacted much with this family, but he remembered the young Nation-Builder was said to have come from this family.
“Here.”
Rod handed the letter over, then backed off far away.
From the recent work, he discovered that as a translator, he had little use, instead, he felt like a babysitter. He couldn’t understand why the Purification Mechanism sent him to look after these two foreign travelers, or why they both seemed so familiar with him.
He judged Shao Liangxi as overly friendly, but Shao Liangye was different, this guy was cold, yet in some details, Rod noticed he also seemed familiar with him, but Rod himself had never interacted with them.
“What’s this?”
Shao Liangxi leaned in too, resting on Shao Liangye’s shoulder.
“An invitation.”
Shao Liangye quickly glanced at it, arriving at such a conclusion.
“Inviting us? The Stuart family?”
Shao Liangxi’s eyes sparkled, these days of boredom had become unbearable for her, such matters were simply an unexpected joy.
“Yeah, seems so.”
“When?”
“It doesn’t say on here, but mentioned they’ll send someone to pick us up.”
A banquet?
Rod stood to the side, thinking, convened by the Stuart family, seemed like it wasn’t open to the public, a completely invitation-only event… It sounded full of wealth and power, only the upper echelons of Old Dunling qualified to attend.
Various thoughts flashed through his mind but eventually vanished, Rod considered himself a practical person, rarely concerned with such distant matters, feeling that conducting good academic research and then buying a house in Old Dunling, living a peaceful life, was quite nice.
Thinking this, the voices calling became clearer, Rod heard Shao Liangye calling him.
“Rod, Rod!”
Shao Liangye called several times before bringing Rod’s awareness back.
“What’s up?”
“You’ll be here these days, right? Then we’ll go together.”
Shao Liangye said.
Listening to his words, Rod displayed a service industry worker’s characteristic smile.
“Alright.”
After speaking, his mind froze for a few seconds.
Wait a minute!
“Together?”
Rod showed a surprised expression, Shao Liangye nodded, took out the invitation, pointing to Rod’s name on it.
“Yes, what’s the matter?”
