Gun of Ashes

Chapter 1415: Regret

  • Next Chapter

“Banquet! Banquet! A wonderful banquet!”

Inside the Stuart family’s mansion, Oscar raised his glass high, stood on the table, shouted a few words, then sneezed loudly, wobbled off the table, and wrapped himself in a warm blanket.

“After the disaster, everything awaits revival… It’s really a good time to celebrate, to celebrate that you all survived.”

He nestled honestly on the sofa, clutching the blanket while wiping his nose.

The indoor temperature was extremely low, even the Stuart household was plunged into cold due to damaged pipes, but Oscar felt it was nothing; after all, people managed to survive before technological progress, now it’s just a remembrance of the past.

Thinking this, he tossed a few more pieces of wood in front of the fireplace, making the fire burn stronger.

Of course, reminiscing aside, Oscar paid great attention to keeping warm, as his rheumatic knee couldn’t endure such cold.

The storm made his aged body ache, and he barely managed to ditch the cane a few days ago.

“Your leg recovered so quickly?”

A voice sounded, Oscar looked toward the other side. It was Selyu, who was working at the desk. She lowered her head, correcting documents while speaking.

Inside felt somewhat crowded, packed with some miscellaneous items, blankets everywhere, and a sofa with an indentation, seemingly slept on by someone.

“I’m a battle-hardened warrior, after all!”

Oscar patted his leg hard, pridefully.

Selyu merely scoffed disdainfully at this and continued her work.

Noises erupted outside the door, seemingly a lot of people.

This was quite an unusual event, as the Stuart residence rarely had many people; most were servants and guards, and they seldom broke such silence, plunging the mansion into noise.

The door was pushed open, the old butler carrying hot coffee, scolding the people in the corridor.

“Slow down! Keep it down!”

He closed the door, walked in, and complained.

“Can’t these Purification Mechanism folks be more careful?”

Raising his head, he glanced at Selyu, who was working, then at this room filled with clutter, resembling a storage room, and at the old man leaning by the fireplace, munching and drinking, an inexplicable rage rose in his heart.

Since the storm, the Purification Mechanism suffered the most damage; Black Mountain Hospital was crowded with injured, and many were homeless unfortunates like Red Falcon. The Platinum Palace had little resources to spare to assist civilians, so aiding the Purification Mechanism fell to the Stuart family, more precisely, it was the Nation-Builders executing it.

Aside from the majority already underway, the Stuart family had reclaimed most of Old Dunling’s industries, sheltering these homeless unfortunates, and serving as a temporary office, housing secondary documents salvaged from the Purification Mechanism.

The most crucial parts were evacuated during the Death Row plan; everything now will expedite the Purification Mechanism’s self-healing.

Thus, the Stuart mansion became noisy, aside from a few rooms Selyu reserved for herself, filled with personnel from the Purification Mechanism. To prevent these folks from accidentally breaking the expensive artworks, they were repackaged and piled in the corners, making the room look much like a warehouse.

For the old butler, letting these people in was already his biggest concession; seeing them make a mess everywhere made him angrier, especially seeing the dignified Duchess of Stuart, working in a corner like that, his rage peaked.

“Alright, alright, it’s nothing.”

Selyu sympathized with the old butler’s feelings, comforted him, “I don’t mind these things, it’s the same wherever I work.”

“But you are at least a duke, not to mention, now a Nation-Builder.”

The old butler continued complaining, placing the coffee aside, then looked at Oscar slumped in a corner.

“We don’t harbor useless people here.”

Hearing this in a bad temper tone, Oscar directly grabbed the cane and let out a sound of painful whimpering.

“I’m already like this, and you…”

His exaggerated expression seemed like he’d die the next second.

Seeing this, the old butler could only sneer for a while, then sighed helplessly; he couldn’t really kick Oscar out, but against this old rascal, he truly had no solution for him.

“So, you’re planning to hold a banquet here? We don’t have much space available now.”

The old butler said.

“No, it’s not really a banquet, just a little gathering, which he proposed,” Selyu said as she picked up a pen, pointing at Oscar.

“Calling it a banquet, doesn’t it sound much grander?” Oscar smiled.

“What’s really going through your minds.”

After a few words, the old butler felt like he was about to be filled with rage again, as the mansion’s manager, he truly couldn’t stand these things.

If fighting demons was Lorenzo’s battlefield, managing the mansion meticulously was the old butler’s battlefield, but now he was in full retreat, even his last territory was about to fall, his mood worsened.

“Victory banquet, we barely got through a major disaster, isn’t it worth celebrating?”

Oscar cheerfully waved his hand, for a moment, the old butler couldn’t decide whether to say he was childish or shamelessly inappropriate.
