Chapter 365: When Every Bell Lied
Martin heard the crack through Breakwater Aegis. The Bellhide Brute struck his shield again, but the sound beneath the impact was different from the monster’s attack. It came from deeper inside the Belfry, a long metallic groan that traveled through every bridge and bell around them.
Mireva froze in the air while the corrupted western relay flickered silver, black, then silver again. The Brute swung before Martin could look away, forcing him to block on instinct.
"What was that?"
Mireva did not answer. She was still staring toward the center of the lower city.
Rias looked up from the device she had been trying to reach. "That spread."
Mireva landed hard enough to stumble. "No."
Another crack rolled through the dungeon before anyone could move. Dust fell from the bridges, and the Bellhide Brute stopped attacking Martin long enough to turn its head toward the upper district where several Sairren families were still evacuating.
Martin did not need Hungerline to understand what had changed.
"Mireva!"
"I know!"
She struck the nearest bell, but the silver note broke halfway through and returned as two overlapping tones. One still led toward the invading force while the other drifted upward toward the city.
Mireva struck it again.
The same split returned.
The Bellhide Brute lunged past Martin, forcing him to activate Taunt before it could reach the evacuation route. Its attention snapped back, and Martin braced as the creature crashed into Breakwater Aegis.
Stand Against the Current built through the impact, but the strike still pushed him several meters across the bronze floor. The Sairren defenses were no longer distinguishing their intended targets cleanly.
"Rias!"
"I’m checking it!"
She was already moving toward the central map relay. Elisebeth dropped Silent Stage around another foreign tuning device before its copied note could spread, while Katherine sent Kinnami toward an exposed upper bridge where civilians were still moving.
Alexandra and Kumoe remained near the bellkeepers, but the bone-armed Beastslayer had stopped trying to lure Alexandra away. He was cutting directly at relay supports now.
The invaders had changed objectives.
Capturing route-keepers had been one goal. Breaking the city was another.
"Mireva, what central junction?"
She finally looked at Martin. Recognition sat underneath the fear in her expression.
"The Upper Resonance Network does not carry every route independently. Some patterns cross through a shared junction beneath the residential district."
"Can they reach it?"
"They should not be able to."
Another ancient lock opened somewhere below.
Mireva’s face hardened as she looked toward the gates the mercenaries had forced them to wake. "They never needed to reach it from above."
Martin followed her gaze toward the Lower Belfry. The enemy had used the Sairren’s own bell to open routes underneath the city.
"They came underneath."
Mireva launched toward the center.
Martin could not follow immediately because the Bellhide Brute still blocked the stairs. He switched weapons, bringing Riftbell Warhammer into his right hand as the creature swung again.
The blow struck Breakwater Aegis. Martin let Stand Against the Current gather the force before stepping into his response.
"Faultnote."
Riftbell Warhammer struck the creature’s bronze shoulder and revealed a weakness pattern across the corrupted plating. Martin hit the same spot a second time, cracking the armor enough to stagger the Brute away from the stairs.
He immediately moved past it.
The monster was no longer the priority.
"Katherine!"
"I have it!"
Kinnami formed a barrier behind Martin as the Brute recovered, buying him enough distance to escape. The monster then turned toward the stronger prey trail still dragging at the mercenary corridor rather than pursuing him upward.
Martin ran toward the center of the lower city.
A broad bronze tower rose between three residential bridges. He had passed it before without paying much attention, but now eight black frames had been locked around its lower supports. Mercenaries had reached the structure through service tunnels beneath the floor and driven a copied tuning array directly into its base.
Three attackers were already dead, but more were still working.
Mireva reached them first. Her spear went through one operator’s back. She tore it free, slashed a second mercenary across the face with one claw, and threw him from the platform before turning toward the final operator.
He already had one hand on a lever.
Rias shouted from across the bridge. "Don’t!"
Too late.
The black frames tightened around the tower.
The junction rang.
Every bell in the Sunken Belfry answered at once.
Hundreds of mismatched notes struck Martin from every direction until the sound stopped feeling like sound and became pressure. Sairren dropped to their knees throughout the bridges while Mireva clutched the side of the tower.
The central junction split down the middle.
A bronze fracture raced upward through the structure, widened, and tore the top half free. The falling section smashed through two bridges before disappearing into the darkness below.
For several seconds, the Belfry became completely silent.
Then the system began producing errors.
[Upper Resonance Network: Unstable.]
[Residential concealment pattern lost.]
[Route prioritization failure.]
[Lower spawn recognition failure.]
[Warning: Sairren concealment lost across active spawn zones.]
Mireva read the final message once and moved immediately.
"Everyone out of the lower districts!"
She gave the order with her own voice instead of ringing anything. Wardens repeated it through physical signs because nobody could trust resonance anymore.
No open calls. No route-song. Nothing they could not verify.
A Ringing Maw emerged from a lower gate and turned directly toward a Sairren warden. The warden froze for half a second before the monster charged.
Alexandra and Kumoe intercepted it.
Kumoe took the shoulder impact while Alexandra cut across the creature’s flank. Pack Rhythm triggered, allowing the middle head to restore the damage while the right shoved the stunned warden toward a stair.
"Move!" Alexandra yelled.
He did.
More monsters appeared across the lower city. Some attacked mercenaries, some attacked Sairren, and another started toward Katherine before Kinnami forced it away from the evacuation bridge.
The old protection was gone.
Mireva landed near the shattered junction with visibly shaking hands.
Martin reached her. "Can you repair it?"
"Not during this."
"Can you isolate the broken section?"
"No."
She looked toward the upper city. "We evacuate."
Martin studied the battlefield. The party could still fight, and so could the Sairren. That was no longer the real problem.
Every minute they remained here, the enemy learned another bell, another bridge, another route-keeper, another weakness. Killing every invader currently inside the Belfry would not erase what they already knew.
Rias reached them with the route map open.
"There are three intact evacuation paths from the lower residential sector."
Mireva turned sharply. "Which?"
Three silver routes appeared.
East service bridge.
Upper choir stair.
Old caravan rise.
Mireva stared at the map longer than Martin expected.
"They all answer safe."
Rias looked at her. "What does that mean?"
"It means none of them should. Three different routes are answering with one safe identity."
Rias enlarged the records. "The broken network is repeating the same signature."
Mireva nodded.
Martin looked toward the residential levels, where another monster roar echoed upward. "Can we physically check the routes?"
"Yes."
"How long?"
"Too long."
Katherine reached them with Kinnami. "Then we need a choice."
Mireva stared at the three possible paths. "I will not choose one blind."
"You don’t have to," Rias said. She pulled up their previous records. "Which route has physical markers we can verify without resonance?"
"East service bridge."
"Last confirmed?"
"Yesterday."
"Any structural damage today?"
"Unknown."
"Then we check that one first."
Martin nodded. "Small team."
Mireva immediately shook her head. "No players alone. If the route changed physically, you won’t know what the old Sairren signs mean."
"I’ll go."
The same young runner who had brought the tuning strip stood a short distance away. His hands were shaking, but he looked directly at Mireva.
"I know the service markers."
Mireva opened her mouth to refuse before the runner continued.
"You need someone who knows them."
Her jaw tightened. Eventually, she nodded and called two wardens over.
Martin stepped forward. "I’m going too."
"No."
Mireva’s refusal came immediately. "You need to hold the center."
Martin looked around at the broken junction, the monsters climbing from below, and the civilians still leaving the residential district.
She was right.
Rias pointed toward the service bridge. "I’ll verify the records against what they see."
Martin looked at her. "You’re going?"
"I’m more useful verifying the route than standing here stabbing monsters you can already hold."
He hated that answer because it was correct.
"Fine."
Rias left with the young runner and two wardens.
Mireva turned toward the remaining Sairren. "No bells. No route-song. Physical markers only."
A deep note rang from somewhere below.
Everyone around her froze.
It was a child-route call.
Mireva’s expression hardened. "No one follows that."
The note rang again with perfect timing, then a third call answered from another direction.
Martin looked toward the lower city.
The enemy had learned enough to stop copying only travel routes and tactical signals. They were now using sounds the Sairren had been taught to trust since childhood.
Mireva raised her spear and looked toward the residential district her people had occupied for generations.
"We leave this district."
Martin heard what the words cost her.
Behind them, the broken central junction gave one final metallic groan before the remaining half collapsed.
