Harry Potter: Most Annoying System Ever
Chapter 322: The Master Trunk and The Eve of the Heist
Orion Malfoy was completely, relentlessly energized.
The sluggish, contemplative malaise that had settled over him during the autumn months had burned away, replaced by the razor-sharp, kinetic focus of a commander finalizing an invasion.
For the past four days, he had operated with absolute, uninterrupted vigor.
Hogwarts was abandoned entirely to the capable hands of his Reflection Clone. His duplicate attended Ancient Runes, endured Snape’s lingering glares in Potions (due to the complaint of roaming grounds after curfew), and casually ate dinner with Draco, while the real Orion remained securely entrenched at Malfoy Manor, turning his private quarters into an operational war room.
He had distributed tasks across his small, highly specialized syndicate. Dobby was dispatched on rapid-response supply runs; Kreacher was managing internal Manor security and food delivery; and Bellatrix was his lethal, unhinged field operative.
Orion himself spent the hours reviewing every conceivable parameter. The timing, the subterranean cart mechanics, the spatial deceleration curves, the dragon’s biological parameters, and the exact placement of the Thief’s Downfall—every variable was dissected, tested, and accounted for.
On the afternoon of January 30th, the eve of the operation, Orion stood waiting in his bedroom.
The heavy oak door swung open.
Bellatrix glided inside, her dark hair pinned back with sharp silver combs, a manic, thoroughly satisfied smirk playing on her lips. Floating silently through the air beside her was a heavy, perfectly ordinary-looking black leather trunk bound with brass clasps.
"Everything has been acquired, my little star," Bellatrix announced, flicking her wand to guide the trunk onto the floor before his desk.
She tapped the primary brass latch. The lid popped open.
Orion stepped forward, looking inside. The top layer was packed to the brim with plunder. On the left sat a thick, disorganized stack of private, highly classified Ministry ledgers, bank statements, and blackmail material. The remaining space was filled with glittering piles of Galleons, Sickles, and velvet pouches of jewels—the entirety of Dolores Umbridge’s private wealth that she refused to place in a vault, stripped from her London townhouse.
And resting squarely on top of the gold was a heavy, circular disc of dark, tarnished bronze, roughly four inches in diameter, embossed with the official seal of the Ministry of Magic.
Bellatrix reached in, picking up the heavy metal disc and pressing it into Orion’s palm.
"The key to Vault 162," Bellatrix purred, her eyes gleaming. "The toad kept it hidden beneath a rotting floorboard under her tea cabinet. I cleaned out every single scrap of parchment and every last coin she owned. Her house is entirely bare."
"Flawless work, Aunt Bella," Orion praised softly, inspecting the runic indentations along the rim of the bronze disc. He stored it directly into his Inventory. "And the secondary layer?"
Bellatrix closed the trunk lid with a soft click. She drew her curved, walnut wand, her expression shifting into one of dark, theatrical pride.
She tapped the four brass corners of the trunk in a rapid, clockwise sequence.
"Rule of Orion," Bellatrix whispered clearly, speaking the password.
CLACK-CLACK-CLACK.
The internal magical mechanisms shifted with the heavy, grinding sound of shifting gears.
Bellatrix pulled the lid open a second time.
The gold and the papers were gone. In their place was an open hatchway leading down to a sturdy, wooden ladder descending into an illuminated abyss.
Orion stepped up to the edge and climbed down, with Bellatrix following closely behind.
He hit the floorboards and paused, his analytical mind thoroughly stunned by the architectural engineering.
This trunk was vastly, exponentially larger than his school trunk.
The primary staging area was an expansive, polished wooden hall the size of a ballroom, completely empty. Off to the side were two heavy, reinforced iron-bound doors.
Orion walked over and pushed open the second, larger iron door.
His jaw nearly dropped.
The space beyond was not a room. It was a subterranean continent.
It was a colossal, cavernous amphitheater carved from rough, craggy black stone. The ceiling vaulted so high into the enchanted gloom that the top was barely visible, vanishing into dark, misty shadows forty feet above. The ground beneath his boots was not polished wood; it was rugged, jagged terrain, littered with natural boulders, crags, and a deep trench running along the far perimeter.
It was an indoor mountain. A custom-built, high-security dragon habitat.
"I had to be extraordinarily discreet about procuring the foundational spatial extensions," Bellatrix explained, stepping up beside him, crossing her arms proudly. "Thankfully, Rodolphus and Rabastan are at least marginally useful for heavy enchantment work. I had them reinforce the structural integrity and anchor the gravity wards."
Orion turned to look at her, a single eyebrow raised. "And they didn’t ask why you suddenly required a private stadium filled with craggy boulders?"
Bellatrix let out a sharp, mocking laugh that echoed off the high stone ceiling. "They know far better than to question me, Orion. They do what they are told, or they spend an hour on the floor."
"Efficient management," Orion smiled, thoroughly approving of the methodology. "Well... this is absolutely perfect. The spatial capacity will hold an apex beast with room to spare."
He walked back into the main wooden staging room and called out into the quiet.
"Kreacher."
POP.
The old elf appeared instantly, bowing until his nose grazed the floorboards. "Master Orion?"
"Go to my bedroom," Orion instructed, pointing to the empty wall of the primary staging room. "Retrieve the Vanishing Cabinet standing in the corner and transport it down here. Anchor it flush against that wall."
Kreacher’s eyes widened slightly, but he didn’t question the command. "Kreacher will move the royal cabinet immediately!"
POP.
The elf vanished, returning moments later with a soft hum of magic, carefully lowering the towering mahogany portal into the designated space inside the trunk.
Orion nodded, satisfied. By placing the Malfoy end of the Vanishing Cabinet inside this mobile, expanded heist-trunk, he had effectively created a continuous, mobile spatial link his other trunk at Hogwarts.
He turned his focus back to his godmother.
"Now," Orion said, his tone turning clinical. "While we possess the key and the general layout of the vault sector, there will undoubtedly be procedural security measures that even Dolores Umbridge was too dense to consciously note."
He reached into his inner pocket, accessing his Inventory stasis.
Retrieve.
A heavy, dark glass flask materialized in his hand. The thick, mud-like liquid swirled sluggishly inside. The vintage, N.E.W.T.-level Polyjuice Potion he had skimmed from Hermione Granger’s cauldron in Moaning Myrtle’s bathroom over a year ago.
He handed the flask to Bellatrix.
"Prepare yourself, Aunt Bella," Orion instructed softly. "You will be drinking this tomorrow morning. You will adopt the form of Dolores Umbridge."
He met her dark eyes, holding her gaze with absolute authority.
"You know what to do with the real Umbridge once you harvest a fresh supply of her hair tonight."
Bellatrix took the flask, her lips instantly turning down into a dramatic, exaggerated pout.
"No Cruciatus...?" she whined, looking up at him with pleading, manic eyes. "Not even a tiny, little tickle? Just to pass the time?"
Orion’s expression remained stone. "No Cruciatus. I need her physically completely undamaged, for the narative to hold."
Bellatrix let out a long, heavy, theatrical sigh, rolling her eyes. "Fine, fine. No fun at all. You are terribly strict when it comes to such operations, little star."
"I am an efficient one," Orion corrected, a smirk touching his lips. "Go. Prepare your disguise. We move at dawn."
Bellatrix nodded, clutching the flask, and scrambled up the wooden ladder, vanishing back into the Manor.
Orion climbed out of the trunk a moment later, sealing the primary hatch and locking it securely. He stood alone in his bedroom, rolling his shoulders, feeling the thrilling, cold hum of the endgame approaching.
He turned toward the empty room.
"Dobby."
CRACK.
The free elf appeared, vibrating with intense, nervous loyalty. "Master Orion is ready for Dobby?!"
"I am, Dobby," Orion said, walking over to his desk.
He unfolded a large, intricate piece of parchment. Across the page, sketched in meticulous, architectural detail, was a complete subterranean cross-section of Gringotts’ deepest cavern network.
Orion had spent the last three days constructing the blueprint. He had cross-referenced the confessions extracted from Dolores Umbridge, the structural details of Vault 162, the approximate depth of the Thief’s Downfall, and the casual, historical descriptions Bellatrix had provided regarding the precise placement of the neighboring Lestrange Family Vault.
He tapped the map with his finger.
"Dobby," Orion murmured, his indigo eyes blazing with cold, brilliant, unapologetic intent. "Here is what you need to know."
