Money can always be earned again, but if Grandma were gone, she’d be gone for good forever.

Grandma shook her head. “Silly girl, you don’t need to blame yourself. It’s not your fault. If anyone is to blame, it’s those who are just too greedy.”

Alana knew exactly who her grandmother was referring to, though she didn’t say it outright.

But just as she finished speaking, a commotion suddenly broke out outside.

The commotion sounded familiar.

Alana paused for a moment, roughly guessing who it was. There was no point in running away; she slowly stood up.

“Grandma, I’m going out to take a look.”

Grandma nodded. “Go ahead.”

Alana opened the hospital room door and found Darius and Miranda, the married couple, causing a commotion outside.

Miranda and her husband wanted to enter the room, but the bodyguards were blocking their way, so they started causing a scene.

As soon as Miranda saw Alana, she said, “Lana, it’s been several days now. Your grandmother must be mostly recovered by now, right? Tell them to let us in to see her!”

Darius added, “Lana, you promised that once my mother’s condition stabilizes in a few days, you’d let us see her.”

Alana frowned and paused for a moment. “I’ll ask Grandma. If she agrees to see you, we’ll let you in. If she doesn’t, there’s nothing I can do.”

Lying in her hospital bed, Grandma had already guessed who was outside. She furrowed her brow. “Let them in.”

Some things that needed to be resolved simply must be resolved.

Since she was the one who started this, she would be the one to handle it.

Hearing this, Alana couldn’t very well stop Miranda and Darius from coming in.

However, she issued a warning first: “You can come in, but if you make Grandma feel so bad that she faints again, I’ll have the bodyguards throw all of you out of the hospital immediately!”

Darius was clearly annoyed. “Lana, what do you mean? How dare you threaten me and your aunt?”

Miranda nodded in agreement, speaking with equal defiance, “Exactly. We’re your elders... show us some respect!”

They had deliberately come over while Stephan was away.

As long as Stephan wasn’t by Alana’s side, manipulating her would be a piece of cake.

In their eyes, Alana was nothing more than a junior... what kind of trouble could she possibly cause in front of her elders?

Besides, they’d watched Alana grow up and were used to bossing her around, so they didn’t think she could do anything to them.

Alana remained expressionless. She now knew full well how to deal with such shameless and unreasonable relatives: meet force with force.

If they’re unreasonable, you have to be even more unreasonable than they are!

Constant compromise and weakness will only embolden them.

Only by striving to become strong and fearless will others come to fear and respect you.

Alana’s tone turned stern. “I don’t plan on being polite to you either. If you won’t agree to my terms, there’s no point in going in. I know full well that you didn’t come to see Grandma out of concern for her health.”

Miranda glared at her in fury, one hand on her hip and the other pointing at Alana.

“Lana, you’ve really gotten too bold! Don’t you fear divine retribution for speaking to our elders this way?”

Alana remained unmoved. “Since you’ve put it that way, I see no reason to be polite to you either. Bodyguards, drag them out.”

Just as several burly bodyguards were about to grab them, Miranda’s arrogance vanished instantly.

Darius couldn’t help but say, “Wait! We’ll agree to your terms!”

Upon hearing this, Alana finally relented and agreed to let them see Grandma.

After Darius and Miranda, the married couple, successfully entered the house, they were the first to feign concern and ask after their grandmother’s well-being.

Grandma couldn’t be bothered with their insincere words. “Cut the nonsense. I know what you’re up to. Just get to the point.”

Darius and Miranda exchanged a glance.

Darius paused for a moment, then said bluntly, “Mom, can you give all the assets you’ve entrusted to Alana to my family instead?”

Grandma sneered, “Tell me, on what grounds?”

Darius replied matter-of-factly, “Because I’m your own son. That money was supposed to be left for me.”

Grandma was so exasperated by Darius’ brazen audacity that she burst out laughing. “I’m not even dead yet, and you’re already so eager to get your hands on the money?”

Darius, thick-skinned as ever, denied it. “No, I’m just holding it for you. Your money and the property deeds add up to millions, maybe even tens of millions. How could you possibly entrust all that money to Alana, a girl in her early twenties?”

“What if she mishandles it and loses the money? Besides, I’m your son. Even if you don’t want the money yourself, you should give it to me, not to Alana, your fake granddaughter!”

Grandma frowned and said bluntly, “I’m giving it to Alana. Lana stayed by my side day and night, caring for me when I was sick. As for you, my eldest son, where were you when I was ill? Why didn’t you come personally to take care of me?”

“So you only remember you’re my son when money is involved? You’re not nearly as thoughtful as my granddaughter Lana. Why should I give you any money?”

Darius was speechless.

The old woman might look frail, but she was certainly no pushover.

No wonder Miranda had been pestering this old woman for so many days without getting her to budge.

“Mom, even if you won’t give me any money, you have to give some to your grandchildren. Are you going to leave them with not a single penny? That would really break their hearts! Will they even acknowledge you as their grandmother in the future?”

Grandma cut him off bluntly, “I don’t care if they acknowledge me or not. I’ve been sick for so long, and they haven’t even come to see me a single day! Your children are just like you, it makes no difference whether they’re there or not!”

Darius blinked.

He was completely at a loss.

He glanced at Miranda and gave her a look, hoping she’d say something.

Miranda couldn’t help but roll her eyes. She’d said everything she could... talked herself hoarse, but the old woman still wouldn’t budge.

That old hag was just biased toward Alana biased to the extreme, and didn’t care one bit about her eldest son.

Darius had no choice but to resort to a threat. “Mom, are you saying you don’t want me as your son anymore? Don’t you want your grandchildren either? If you don’t give us our share of the money, we’ll cut ties with you. We won’t take care of you in your old age or fulfill our filial duties. We’ll let you die alone, and we won’t even collect your body when you’re dead!”

Grandma scoffed coldly, completely unfazed by the threat. “Fine, I don’t want you. I only want Alana. Lana is thoughtful. Even when I’m old, she’ll take care of me and fulfill her filial duties. Unlike you lot, who only know how to upset me and can’t wait for me to die!”

Alana was furious hearing this, not to mention her grandmother.

She seized the moment to say to her grandmother, “Grandma, don’t worry. I’ll definitely take care of you.”

Hearing this, Grandma immediately turned on Darius and his wife. “See that? She is so kind, she’ll even take care of me in my old age. Why on earth should I give money to you ungrateful wretches who want to drive me to my grave, instead of her?!”

Darius and Miranda were speechless.

This was so frustrating!

But they couldn’t argue back.

Darius thought about how his family still owed Agnes tens of millions, and that those tens of millions would likely have to be covered by the old lady.

He immediately backtracked, “Mom, I was just joking. We’d never dream of cutting ties with you.”

Miranda agreed, “Exactly! You’re our own mother... our dear, dear mother... and the beloved grandmother of my son and daughter. It’s a blood bond that can never be severed for a lifetime. How could we just cut ties like that? We can’t cut ties... we absolutely must not!”

Grandma let out another cold laugh.

That sounds better in theory than in practice.
