Chapter 3064: Chapter 77: Suspicion

Beside the Molten Lava Long Table.

Patrick squinted his eyes, cautiously scrutinizing the slightly blurred figures within the shielding barrier, guessing the topic they were currently discussing.

Was Lord Kannai expressing dissatisfaction with Belfinger’s lateness?

Or had He recognized Belfinger’s identity?

Or did He have some special task to entrust to that bird-headed figure?

The silent atmosphere always lends itself to wild speculation—especially in this new meeting room, where the overhead bone dome and the molten lava long table before them both amplify certain aspects of the ambiance—after overcoming the initial excitement and thrill of recognizing a Great Wizard serving as the Sin Bearer, Patrick’s sensitivity as an aristocratic wizard inadvertently gave birth to some dreadful conjectures.

For instance, what kind of student organization would attract the attention of a Great Wizard? Or to put it another way, why has the Seven Sins suddenly received a Great Wizard’s ’favor’? Is there something peculiar or inappropriate about one of their recent missions? Or does this Great Wizard plan to stir up trouble at the school and wants to use a well-established yet obscure student secret society as a scapegoat?

Further, is this person before us, who wasn’t introduced by the previous Sin Bearer, really the school’s wizard? Or even worse, is it truly a wizard?

Engaging in a bit of black magic or illegal magic experiments wouldn’t unsettle someone like Patrick, a scion of aristocratic wizards. Just like the old saying goes, to get by in life, one’s hands must inevitably be tainted black.

But there’s still a significant difference between minor harmless faults and potentially family-involving major troubles.

The gravity of reality made the young Lucifer anxious, as every minute and second, a new thought, good or bad, surfaced in his mind, layered upon layers, weighing heavily on his heart, making it hard for him to breathe.

"——Can someone tell me, what on earth has happened?"

An abruptly unfamiliar voice shattered the silent tension in the meeting room.

The speaker was Beelzebub, the second-to-last to arrive at the meeting room. He looked up at the high dome above, then down at the table in front of him resembling flowing lava, his voice tinted with confusion: "Why has our Sin Bearer suddenly changed? Or rather, why has our Sin Bearer become human?"

Obviously, he shared similar confusions with Patrick.

And this last question, though seemingly a bit humorous, pointed directly to the core issue of tonight.

Everyone knew that the Sin Bearer was certainly a person, but for several years now, he had maintained the role in the form of a cat and done well.

Now changing into a person, does it mean the Sin Bearer has ’changed hands’?

Yet they had not received any related notices? Did this abrupt change align with the Seven Sins’ procedures? Does this change indicate that the Seven Sins will undergo certain transformations as well?

"——I know no more than you do."

Asmodeus, who had arrived a few minutes before Beelzebub, adjusted the goat mask on his face, adding softly in a low voice: "I wasn’t even aware that I wouldn’t need to transform into a goat upon reaching the meeting room door tonight."

Patrick snapped back to reality.

"——I only know that our previous Sin Bearer, that black cat, wasn’t of Great Wizard Level." He worded carefully, while the corner of his eye remained fixed on the movements within the shielding barrier.

The phrase ’Great Wizard’ made the already oppressive atmosphere in the meeting room even more solemn.

And Patrick’s gaze then turned to the remaining three devils—according to the earlier speaking order, it was someone else’s turn to speak before him.

Mammon, wearing a fox mask, softly mentioned a detail he had previously observed: "——Belfinger should have known our previous Sin Bearer, which is that black cat."

Patrick’s heart gave a slight leap, and he involuntarily glanced left and right; the attendees didn’t seem to show the expected astonishment. This implied that not only one devil had guessed at this possibility before.

In fact, he too had similar conjectures because Belfinger acted too nonchalantly towards that black cat. Several times, he saw it staring at the cat’s tail as if wanting to take a bite.

However, that cat kept a tight watch on its tail, always retracting it at the perfect moments.

After Mammon, it was Leviathan’s turn to speak, presenting a line of thought Patrick had never considered: "——So, is it possible that the black cat disappeared, and then its master came looking for it?"

With this statement, everyone fell into thought.

The last to speak was Samael.

Perhaps due to the human transformation, his voice no longer held its usual sharpness, instead sounding somewhat gentle: "——I haven’t heard of any recent student disappearance cases. Nor on Buji Island. That cat might have gone missing after leaving Buji Island. Furthermore."

He paused, contemplated briefly, and added succinctly: "My predecessor, while introducing the Seven Sins, mentioned that our Sin Bearer might come from relevant departments... so, we can’t rule out it went to carry out another task."

"That’s just its claim."

Patrick couldn’t help but speak, reminding: "Who among us would reveal their true identity to others?"

"Were your predecessors all so responsible?" Beelzebub’s focus seemed different from the other devils. She sighed a little: "My predecessor only told me to carefully conceal my identity and not let others find out..."

Patrick glanced slightly sideways.

It sounded as if Beelzebub’s identity differed somewhat from him or Samael and others? Of course, she might be doing it deliberately, as her interruption slightly lightened the somber atmosphere around the molten lava long table.

Pop!

A minute sound akin to a soap bubble bursting echoed clearly in the ears of the surrounding devils.

Instantly drawing their attention back to the head position of the molten lava long table.

The shielding barrier was lifted, and Belfinger, wearing a bird-head mask, returned dispiritedly to his seat, while the Sin Bearer leisurely glanced around with a hint of amusement in his voice.

"——No need to be tense or let your minds wander. I merely sought some simple insights from Belfinger about your small organization’s current situation."

His tone was light, as if chatting with old friends: "No cat went missing, and no cat’s had an accident. But one thing you guessed correctly. I am indeed that cat’s master. This impromptu gathering is just to inform everyone that, due to other tasks, that cat cannot continue to serve as the Sin Bearer. Thus, he entrusted me to look after you all.

The operation of the Seven Sins will remain unaffected, and the core principles will remain unchanged. The Seven Sins is still the Seven Sins, a united, cooperative, and relaxed-spirited organization, and as the Sin Bearer, I will continue to fulfill the supervisory duty..."

Indeed, the previous conversation hadn’t escaped the notice of this Great Wizard.

Patrick’s heart tightened slightly as he meticulously reviewed their earlier conversation to ensure no offense was given before quietly sighing with relief. However, regarding the Sin Bearer’s self-professed relationship with that cat, he remained skeptical.

"——I understand there might be many suspicions about my identity." The new Sin Bearer on the obsidian high seat chuckled, raising a hand to channel a magical force from thin air: "I believe this should verify my identity..."

It was a magic force belonging to the school’s Protect Legal Formation, and the present devils immediately recognized it. Being able to channel the force from the Protect Legal Formation indicated that he was neither a demon nor an entity from outside the school.

This conclusion brought a wave of relief to everyone.

Including Patrick—he had initially prepared himself to discard the ring of the Seven Sins into Lin Zhong Lake once the meeting concluded. But now, he changed his mind. The wild fire in his heart that had been doused by anxiety and dread rekindled with a tiny flame.
