Chapter Sixty-Five: Harry’s Eavesdropping

Snape scoffed.

He didn’t need Legilimency to know what was going through Potter’s foolish mind.

Did he really need a reason to deduct points?

Of course he did.

After all, even professors needed a justification for deducting points.

So Snape snatched the book from Harry’s hands.

"Library books cannot be taken outside the library. Ten points from Gryffindor!"

The smile on Harry’s face disappeared.

He glared angrily at Snape.

What kind of rule is that?

There was no such rule at all.

Snape had obviously just made it up.

I knew it! Just to deduct points from me, he actually went and invented a school rule!

Vesey also wanted to laugh, but she couldn’t do so now. Instead, she put on a worried expression.

"Professor, you must be injured. Don’t hide it. Let’s go to the hospital wing!"

Snape had no intention of going to the hospital wing.

He glanced warily at Harry before speaking gently to Vesey.

"Don’t worry about it. Don’t stand out here. It’s cold. I’ll deal with it myself."

With that, he limped away.

Vesey watched his back for a moment, then deliberately put on a worried expression.

"Does it hurt, Professor? I’d better go find him. What if he insists on being stubborn and refuses to go to the hospital wing?"

She said goodbye to Harry and the others before hurrying into the castle.

Harry and the others looked at one another.

"Does the word ’stubborn’ even apply to Snape?"

Harry pouted.

After hesitating for a moment, he said, "What if I go over there? If Vesey is with him, maybe he’ll be in a better mood. Then I can get my book back."

Hermione and Ron stared at him in disbelief.

"Are you serious?"

"Are you crazy?"

The two of them tried to get rid of this strange idea from Harry’s head.

But Harry obviously wasn’t going to listen.

The Quidditch match was tomorrow, and he was already feeling nervous.

He wanted to read more books about Quidditch.

There was only one copy of the book Hermione had borrowed for him in the library, and even if he went back to borrow another copy, it would already be gone.

"Maybe it’ll work!"

He ran off.

Hermione and Ron watched him leave with sympathetic expressions.

I hope Harry doesn’t get thrown out of there.

Harry could guess what Hermione and Ron were thinking.

In fact, he was already starting to regret his decision.

Especially when he found himself standing outside Snape’s office.

He became nervous.

However, he discovered that Snape’s office door was open.

And Vesey’s voice could be heard from inside.

Harry immediately pushed the door open a little farther and carefully peeked through the gap.

There were three people inside: Vesey, Snape, and Filch.

Snape had pulled his robes up to his knees and was leaning against the desk while Filch helped bandage his leg.

Snape sighed when he saw Vesey’s reddened eyes.

"I told you not to look if you were frightened. You insisted on seeing it, and then you cried anyway."

Harry clenched his fists.

Hmph!

If Vesey hadn’t been worried about you, her eyes wouldn’t be red.

And this man actually has the nerve to scold her!

But Vesey seemed rather angry, and she looked considerably more energetic than Snape.

"Who hurt you? I want to deal with him! That’s completely unacceptable!"

She looked furious.

Snape chuckled softly.

He was happy simply hearing her voice.

But after laughing for a moment, he deliberately raised his voice again in warning.

"Listen, you foolish girl. Don’t cause trouble. If you get yourself injured again, I’ll definitely give you detention. You don’t want to know what my detentions are like."

Filch raised his head and added grimly, "Professor Snape’s detentions have always been terrifying. I’ve heard some students were brought to tears by them."

He paused before continuing.

"But if Professor Snape wishes, I can take care of this girl’s detention myself."

Harry’s gums itched when he heard that.

Vesey was being so kind, wanting to avenge Snape, yet Snape was threatening her in return!

He suddenly felt sorry for Vesey.

She was so good to Snape and clearly admired and trusted him, yet Snape always spoke to her in that condescending manner.

Who does he think he is?

Harry really wanted to rush in and punch Snape.

But the last bit of reason held him back.

Snape, however, didn’t seem to take Filch’s suggestion seriously.

He chuckled.

"Mr. Filch, perhaps you could teach the child a lesson for me."

Harry looked at Snape with disgust.

Teach the child a lesson for you?

Whose child?

Snape, do you have the courage to explain that clearly?

What does Vesey have to do with you?

Has he been single for so long that he’s started imagining things?

Harry continued grumbling inwardly while secretly peering through the gap.

When Filch heard Snape’s words, he quickly nodded nervously.

"Yes, yes. I just thought it might be necessary..."

At that moment, Harry saw Snape suddenly move as though his leg hurt.

The two men turned around, blocking Harry’s view.

He could no longer see what was happening inside.

Harry could only push the door open a little farther, trying to get a better look.

But this time, something went wrong.

The door creaked.

Snape immediately lowered his robes and strode toward the door.

When he saw Harry, his eyes filled with fury.

"What are you doing here?!"

His fists clenched, and he looked as though he might punch Harry at any moment.

Although Harry disliked Snape intensely, he was still frightened.

He whispered, "Professor, I wanted to ask about my book..."

Snape’s expression became even more terrifying.

"For the book? You’re not here to eavesdrop?"

He glared at Harry.

"Do you want to say—"

Harry didn’t wait to hear the rest.

He was so frightened that he immediately turned and ran out of Snape’s office.

He sprinted all the way back to Gryffindor Tower, his face covered in sweat and his heart still pounding.

Snape was terrifying.

Harry had never seen him look that frightening before.

But why was Snape so angry?

Harry sat down in the Gryffindor common room.

Then he suddenly remembered the wound on Snape’s leg.

He hadn’t paid much attention to it earlier because he’d been focused on getting his book back.

But now that he thought about it carefully, it looked as though something had bitten him.

What could have bitten him?

Harry’s thoughts raced.

Then his mind suddenly settled on the enormous three-headed dog guarding the trapdoor on the fourth floor.

That’s right!

That huge dog!

The wound looked exactly like a bite mark.

Snape must have tried to get through the trapdoor and been bitten by the dog.

He hadn’t been angry because Harry was eavesdropping.

He was angry because he was afraid Harry would discover the three-headed dog!
