Chapter Sixty-Six: Still Too Much Free Time!
Vesey didn’t realize that Harry had been eavesdropping outside until Snape rushed out.
She put on a dumbfounded expression.
"Professor, don’t deduct points from my brother. My brother has been having such a miserable time lately. If you deduct more points from him, he’ll cry."
She said it gently.
Snape snorted, then looked at Filch.
"All right, Mr. Filch. You’d better get back to work. I think my wound will be fine."
Filch nodded respectfully and left.
Snape waited until he was gone before finally breathing a sigh of relief and sinking into a chair.
"Hiss..."
He drew in a quiet breath through his teeth.
Vesey immediately came over, pointed her wand at Snape’s leg, and cast:
"Heal as Before!"
The effect wasn’t very strong.
She was preparing to channel more magical power through her wand when Snape stopped her.
"I told you not to use that wand recklessly. Last time, you ended up in the hospital wing. What about this time?"
Vesey blinked. She deliberately made her eyes turn red before saying,
"I can blow up a troll for my brother, and I’m willing to go to the hospital wing for you!"
Snape’s lips trembled, and his eyes turned red.
He immediately turned his face away.
After a moment, he said in a defeated voice,
"I don’t deserve it, Vesey. If you knew what a terrible person I am, you would hate me and tell me to stay away from you."
Vesey understood what Snape meant.
He probably had never intended to keep living from the beginning.
He had lost Lily. He had told Voldemort the prophecy. He had indirectly caused Lily’s death. If it hadn’t been for Harry, perhaps he would have died alongside Lily.
But Vesey certainly wasn’t going to behave as though she knew everything.
Her face filled with surprise, as if Snape’s words had frightened her.
Then she gently moved closer and looked into his eyes.
"Professor, no matter what you did in the past, I’ve thought about it carefully. And I’ve decided to tell you that I forgive you."
She smiled softly.
"Whether anyone else forgives you or not, to me, you’re the best professor."
Snape felt as though something had become lodged in his throat.
He really wanted to ask:
I killed your parents. Would you still forgive me?
But he couldn’t say it.
Even though they had only been together for a few months, he could no longer bear the thought of losing this child.
If Vesey learned the truth, she would surely stay away from him in disgust.
Snape couldn’t even imagine how much it would hurt.
Then let it be.
Let me enjoy this stolen warmth for a few more years.
She can learn the truth after I’m dead.
By then, if the child hated him and wanted nothing to do with him, it wouldn’t matter anymore.
---
The next morning, it wasn’t even five o’clock.
Vesey couldn’t sleep.
She had talked with Snape for a while the previous day, and his mood seemed to have improved considerably afterward.
Later, she had gone with him to the hospital wing.
Madam Pomfrey had prescribed two bottles of potion for Snape and given Vesey one as well.
She said Vesey had been too exhausted lately and needed to get more rest.
Vesey was helpless.
She really had been staying up late recently.
She had found several storybooks in the Hogwarts library, and the wizarding novels were surprisingly interesting. She often ended up reading until midnight.
But there was nothing she could do about it.
She had been a night owl even before transmigrating, and apparently even transmigration couldn’t change that.
She had also thought about asking Snape to arrange a different dormitory for her. She wanted to stay with the girls so they could chat together when they couldn’t sleep.
Unfortunately, Snape had completely misunderstood what she meant.
He had solemnly warned her not to think too much about it and then given the Slytherin students a lecture about speaking ill of others behind their backs.
He seemed to think that someone had pressured Vesey into wanting to do this.
He had even privately hinted that if anyone said anything bad about Vesey again, she could simply write down their names and he would personally speak to their families.
Not wanting to offend anyone, Vesey eventually abandoned the idea of sharing a room with the girls.
What’s wrong with a girl who doesn’t sleep or chat with other girls, but instead hides her loneliness in novels at night?
Unfortunately, Madam Pomfrey refused to let her leave without taking another potion.
To Vesey’s surprise, this potion—and even the potion Snape had given her after Halloween—wasn’t bitter at all.
Instead, it carried the faint fragrance of some unfamiliar fruit.
It reminded Vesey of children’s medicine powder from the modern world. It wasn’t overly sweet, but it had a pleasant taste.
After drinking the potion, Vesey immediately became sleepy.
She somehow made it back to her dormitory before collapsing onto the bed and closing her eyes.
Even though she had gone to bed early and woken up early, she had no idea what she could possibly do before five in the morning.
Vesey had originally planned to read her storybook for a while.
Then she suddenly slapped her forehead.
She could use this time to write another diary entry.
During this period, she had almost figured out Cassandra’s personality.
This time, she could finally add a second heroine to her diary.
After all, she had only mentioned Hermione before. That might make some people think she only liked Gryffindor girls and had nothing to do with the Slytherin girls.
It was time to broaden their horizons.
Vesey immediately took the diary out of the system.
As for whether writing a diary at this hour would wake all her diary holders, that wasn’t her problem.
If I can’t sleep, none of you get to sleep either.
Vesey chuckled, opened the diary, and began writing.
At the same time—
Dumbledore’s Office
Dumbledore was suddenly awakened in his bedroom on the second floor.
He yawned and stared at the diary that had appeared in front of him.
With an unusually weary expression, he muttered,
"What normal person writes a diary at this hour?"
The Dungeons — Snape’s Office
Snape was startled awake as well.
He was a light sleeper and became alert at the slightest disturbance, so the sudden appearance of the diary was practically like having fireworks set off beside his ears.
Snape’s expression darkened.
"She has far too much free time. We really should put that Muggle in Hogwarts as an assistant. She can wake up at five every morning and grade homework for those idiots!"
Quirrell’s Office
Voldemort was controlling Quirrell’s body and sneaking toward the end of the corridor on the fourth floor.
Suddenly, his body froze.
The diary had silently appeared in front of him.
"Go back!"
Voldemort glanced at the words appearing on the diary and immediately abandoned his exploration.
Gryffindor Tower
Hermione opened her eyes.
She stared blankly at the diary floating before her and muttered sleepily,
"Why is it so early? Doesn’t that sister ever sleep?"
She rubbed her eyes.
I envy her so much.
If I had that much energy, I’d definitely use it to study!
