Chapter 54: The Abyssal Echo

"What are you babbling about, you revolting freak?" Kael demanded, his voice cold, flat, and devoid of fear. "Do you truly believe a magnificent realm like the Starlight Kingdom could be so easily destroyed?"

"Ke-ke-ke... Ahahaha!"

The Grade-A Aberrant’s guttural laughter roared through the cavern, vibrating through the solid stone floor and shaking loose a shower of gravel and dust from the subterranean ceiling. The sound pressed against the ears of the trembling heroes like a physical weight, forcing them to grit their teeth to keep their footing.

"You think the Starlight Kingdom stands because of your fragile strength?!" The monster’s massive red eye bulged, veins of black blood throbbing violently across its iris. "Ignorant cattle! You have survived only because He has not yet chosen to begin!"

Cold sweat beaded on the brows of the surrounding heroes as they raised their weapons, their muscles locked in high-tension stances.

Kael’s brow twitched. Azure mana flared around his body, wrapping his longsword in a dense shroud of sub-zero mist. "What are you talking about?"

"Your kingdom remains standing for one reason alone," the Aberrant hissed, its raspy voice cutting through the cavern like jagged steel. "Because He has yet to unsheathe his hand!"

Without warning, a high-pitched hum vibrated through the air. Arcs of violent purple electricity crackled across the monster’s pitch-black, spherical body, generating a powerful electromagnetic surge.

"Watch out!" Kael shouted.

Before the heroes could react, the intense magnetic pulse locked onto their steel weapons. Swords, daggers, and heavy armor plates groaned as an irresistible pull dragged them toward the beast. Two junior heroes were yanked off their feet, their weapons flying out of their hands and snapping directly into the monster’s pulsating central eye.

The eye swallowed the metal whole, absorbing the steel and converting the kinetic energy into raw, crackling lightning.

"It’s absorbing physical attacks!" a hero yelled in panic.

The Aberrant unleashed the absorbed kinetic force in a blinding discharge of electrical arcs. The blast slammed into three approaching heroes, throwing them backward into the jagged cavern walls with a sickening crunch. Scorched earth and ozone filled the chamber as the warriors slumped to the ground, paralyzed by the shockwaves.

"Focus on magic! Use elemental strikes!" Kael commanded, his eyes calculating the beast’s reaction speed in a fraction of a second.

A pyromancer hero surged forward, unleashing a roaring torrent of flames toward the creature’s core, while a second warrior threw a barrage of wind blades to slice at its writhing, serpent-like legs. But as the elemental attacks neared the central iris, the red eye spun rapidly, creating a localized void that absorbed the magic directly into its core, charging its electromagnetic field to lethal proportions.

"It redirects elemental energy through its iris..." Kael noted inwardly, his mind rapidly dissecting the anomaly. "Physical metal gets converted into kinetic electricity, while pure mana feeds its magnetic core. But every time it absorbs energy, its internal body temperature surges to dissipate the heat."

The Aberrant lunged, its snake-like appendages lashing out like iron whips to pin the remaining heroes against the cavern floor. As the creature raised its mass to crush the trapped warriors, Kael saw his opening.

’The iris can absorb energy, but it cannot process absolute thermal shock.’

Kael moved. He vanished from his position in a blur of blue light, leaving behind a frost-covered footprint. He bypassed the creature’s whipping legs, stepping directly onto the beast’s bulbous back.

’Absolute Zero: Glacial Surge.’

Plunging his longsword deep into the creature’s leathery hide, Kael channeled every ounce of his ice mana into its nervous system. A wave of thick, translucent frost erupted from the blade, rapidly creeping across the Aberrant’s spherical body. The beast shrieked in agony as its internal organs froze solid, its electromagnetic field flickering violently before short-circuiting.

"Execute it now!" Kael barked, his voice cutting through the creature’s screech.

He dragged his sword along the creature’s flank, wildly hacking and severing dozens of its writhing legs in a ruthless, methodical frenzy. As the monster thrashed in absolute agony, Kael drove his azure blade directly into the center of its massive red eye, freezing the internal liquid of the iris into a solid, brittle block of ice.

"Use your flames!" Kael shouted toward the recovering pyromancer, thrusting his frozen blade deeper into the eye socket to transfer his freezing mana directly into the core. "Burn the frozen core!"

The pyromancer sprinted forward, channeling his remaining mana into a brilliant red flame. Grasping the hilt of Kael’s sword alongside him, the hero poured the blazing inferno directly through the metal blade. The sudden transition from absolute zero to extreme heat created a violent thermal explosion inside the frozen iris.

The Aberrant’s central core crackled, its inner lens melting and fracturing into thousands of useless shards.

Even as its core dissolved in fire, the monster’s raspy voice echoed one last time through the cavern, dripping with sinister malice. "*Foolish worms... You slaughter me today, yet you celebrate your own funeral... The true calamity approaches... Killing me changes nothing... Your realm is already doomed...*"

"Finish it!" Kael ordered, turning to the heavy-armored vanguard hero with elemental earth magic.

"Earth Shatter: Golem Strike!"

The earth hero roared, a massive gauntlet of dense, spiked rock coalescing over his right arm. He charged forward, launching a devastating punch directly into the shattered, fire-ravaged eye socket.

BOOM!

The combined shockwave tore through the frozen, brittle structure of the Aberrant. The massive black sphere shattered into thousands of frozen, burning fragments, exploding outward before collapsing into a lifeless pile of slush and ash.

Silence returned to the cavern, broken only by the heavy, ragged breathing of the surviving heroes.

Kael lowered his sword, the frost fading from the steel. "It’s over."

"Kael... thank light you were here," one of the heroes gasped, leaning against his sword as he wiped blood from his mouth. "If not for you, we would have ended up just like them..."

The hero’s eyes flicked toward the shadowed corner of the cave. There lay the grisly, dismembered remains of Kurogane and Arata, their bodies severed at the joints in a pool of congealed blood.

A female hero who had been thrown against the wall earlier dragged herself up, but upon catching sight of the mutilated corpses, she turned away and violently retched.

"Lyra, are you alright?" a colleague asked softly, holding her shoulder.

Kael walked over to the edge of the puddle, his expression grim as he stared down at the remnants of the fallen heroes. He let out a long, heavy exhale. "At least we carved this beast into pieces, just as it did to them."

Yet, despite their victory, an uneasy weight pressed against Kael’s chest.

’What did it mean by ’He has yet to begin’? What calamity is coming to the Starlight Kingdom?’

The subterranean draft blew past, carrying a bitter chill that seeped through his armor. An inexplicable sense of foreboding took root in his mind, warning him that this encounter was merely the harbinger of something far worse.

"Let’s move," Kael commanded, turning toward the cavern exit. "We need to report back to the castle and send a recovery unit for their remains."

The surviving heroes offered weary nods, pulling themselves up to follow Kael’s lead as they limped out of the dark abyss.

[POV: Ren]

The next morning.

Ren sat slumped on the dirt floor of Lumiria’s central square, heavy black circles lining his swollen eyes. He looked like a corpse that had crawled back from the grave.

"Finally... done..." Ren muttered, flopping backward onto the ground with an exhausted groan.

Reika and Miku sat on a nearby stone bench, watching him with bemused expressions.

"Ren, did you even sleep at all last night?" Reika asked, gazing down at his exhausted face.

"I’m going to sleep for a week..." Ren mumbled into the dirt.

The morning sun bled a warm orange hue over the horizon, illuminating the newly established facilities across the sector.

Spreading out before them stood several fully functional agricultural fields, a row of sturdy military-style barracks, a spacious communal dining hall complete with tables, chairs, and an industrial kitchen, alongside a massive food storehouse and an armory structure awaiting inventory. Every building sat neatly aligned, forming an efficient, well-planned district layout.

Ren, Reika, and Miku had spent the entire night scavenging scrap material from around the outer perimeter. Ren had endlessly deconstructed the debris using his system interface, farming CP and CM to construct the essential facilities required to sustain a population.

Building the structures took mere seconds; it was the relentless gathering and recycling of raw scrap material throughout the night that had completely drained his physical energy.

Ren forced himself up onto wobbly legs, stretching his stiff back until his joints popped.

’Damn it... I’m completely spent.’

"Hey, you two," Ren said, waving a limp hand at Reika and Miku as he stumbled forward like a zombie. "Keep an eye on the perimeter for a bit. I’m taking a nap."

Miku burst out laughing. "Look at him go! He looks like a walking corpse!"

Reika offered a soft, fond smile as she watched his slumping back. "Go get some rest, Ren. You worked harder than anyone last night."

Ren dragged his feet toward the Celestial two-story residence located at the far end of the row. He pushed open the heavy front door, took two steps inside, and collapsed directly onto the wooden floorboards.

Within seconds, heavy, rhythmic breathing filled the room as he fell into a deep, dreamless sleep.
