I Am the Dark God's Fragment: My System Turns Destruction Into Power
Chapter 57: The Horizon of Steel
Ren let out a heavy breath, consciously steadying his erratic pulse. He stepped backward from the reinforced iron doors of the armory, casting his eyes upward toward the sky.
High above, dense ink-black clouds converged at an abnormal velocity, blotting out the noon sun. At the center of the churning vortex, a circular fracture seemed to swallow the remaining daylight, casting a suffocating, violet-tinted gloom across the entire settlement.
Across the district, the citizens paused, their faces drawn tight as they looked up in silent apprehension.
Over by the newly built barracks, Ryu was in the middle of instructing a squad of recruits on basic sword forms. Sensing the shift in the air, he dismissed the men, instructing them to fall back to their quarters until the storm passed.
Seeing Ren standing motionless near the armory entrance, Ryu made his way over with measured, deliberate strides.
"Ren. Do you feel it too?" Ryu asked, halting a few paces away.
Ren turned his head slightly, squinting against the biting gale whipping through the square. "Feel what?"
"This weight," Ryu said softly, his hand resting on the pommel of his sword. "It’s wrong."
Ren cast one final glance at the darkening vortex overhead, a cold, unfamiliar tension tightening his chest. "Yeah. Something isn’t right about this overcast."
"Is it just a sudden seasonal shift?" Ren asked, looking back at his companion.
Ryu shook his head. "I don’t think so. I’d like to believe it’s just an early transition into the rainy season, but..."
"It’s mid-summer," Ren interjected, his voice dropping into a low, serious tone. "We’re nowhere near the seasonal turn. A localized weather anomaly of this scale without warning makes zero sense according to basic atmospheric patterns."
Hearing Ren’s quick analysis, Ryu’s jaw tightened. The unnatural wind howling around them grew noticeably colder, biting into their skin like hidden needles.
"Hey! Everyone!" Reika’s voice echoed across the square as she and Miku ran toward the residential line. "Head inside! Secure the doors and stay indoors until the weather clears!"
The refugees quickly complied. Farmers dropped their wooden tools into the soil, jogging toward their stone homes as the wind snapped loudly against their worn clothing. Within minutes, the streets cleared completely, the heavy wooden doors of the residences shutting tight against the gale.
Once the square was clear, Reika and Miku turned and jogged lightly toward the armory where Ren and Ryu stood side by side.
"Ren, Ryu," Reika called out, her hand holding down the skirt of her off-shoulder floral dress against the aggressive drafts. "The atmospheric pressure is dropping too fast. We need to get under cover; it’s getting dangerous out here."
Miku nodded quickly in agreement. "Whatever this storm is, staying out in the open is a bad idea. Let’s head inside."
Dry leaves and stray twigs whipped through the air, driven by gusts that rattled the wooden eaves of the surrounding buildings.
Ren nodded calmly. "In here. Move."
He pushed open the heavy iron doors of the armory, gesturing for the three of them to step inside before entering himself and pulling the thick barrier shut.
The instant the iron door latched into place, the howling wind vanished, replaced by a quiet, insulated warmth.
Hanging from the vaulted wooden rafters overhead, several brass lantern fixtures cast a warm amber glow across the interior. The wide chamber housed row upon row of long, pristine wooden worktables, heavy iron-bound storage chests, and custom-forged steel racks mounted flush against the dark granite walls—designed specifically to hold racks of personal weaponry.
Reika, Miku, and Ryu looked around the spacious, meticulously organized interior in silence.
"What is this place?" Ryu asked, stepping forward to run a finger along the smooth edge of an empty steel mount.
Ren walked toward the center of the hall, gesturing toward the long assembly tables and the wall-mounted storage modules lining the perimeter.
"This is the sector armory," Ren explained smoothly.
"An armory?" Miku rested her chin on her hand, her eyes scanning the empty racks.
"Yeah," Ren said, pacing slowly in front of them. "I designed this facility to house a new tier of combat gear—weapons I intend to introduce to our defense force."
He paused, turning to face the three of them. "We aren’t going to rely solely on swords or standard archery. I want us to adopt something infinitely more efficient—a long-range, lethal standard-issue weapon. Something that can replace the traditional bow and be operated effectively by anyone, regardless of whether they possess mana or elemental affinity."
Reika’s eyes flicked up in realization. "Wait... do you mean the weapon you used back in Vora’s pocket dimension? The one you used against that C-Rank Aberrant before we pushed up the ridge?"
Ryu crossed his arms, his focus sharpening on Ren.
Ren offered a firm, quiet nod. "Exactly."
"It uses condensed metallic projectiles—what I call rounds or bullets," Ren continued, his tone practical and grounded. "It delivers higher kinetic impact than a heavy warbow, but the real advantage is accessibility. Anyone can learn to shoot, maintain, and reload one. A farmer without a drop of magic in his veins can wield the exact same killing power as an elite scout."
Ryu leaned back slightly, his expression thoughtful. "And how exactly do you manufacture these devices? Is this another extension of your construction authority?"
"More or less," Ren replied evenly. "The method doesn’t matter as much as the outcome. What matters is that these tools give human beings a genuine tactical edge in a world that treats them as prey."
He turned away, looking at the long row of empty weapon racks lining the back wall.
"My goal isn’t just to build a settlement," Ren said, his voice ringing clear against the stone interior. "It’s to ensure the people living inside it have the means to defend themselves."
It was a cold, calculated strategy.
In this world, humanity was overwhelmingly reliant on a small, gifted minority—heroes and mages born with rare elemental affinities or exceptional mana pools. The vast majority of the population remained helpless, forced to huddle behind high castle walls and pray that the gifted few could hold back the tides of monstrosities roaming the wild. It was a fragile, ticking clock. If the gifted failed, the helpless perished.
Ren intended to break that balance.
By introducing standardized firearm technology, he could turn every able-bodied civilian into an effective combat unit. A thousand ordinary men armed with kinetic rifles presented a far greater defense grid than a dozen elite knights who could only be in one place at a time. If humanity was to survive the horrors of this world, it couldn’t rely on miracles or gifted nobility. It needed mass-produced, uncompromising force.
His mind was set. He would advance Lumiria’s technological base, step by step, until they possessed a military framework capable of standing against whatever dark threat hung over this realm.
