I Am the Dark God's Fragment: My System Turns Destruction Into Power
Chapter 62: The Line in the Ash
"No... It can’t be..." Evelyn whispered, stepping back into the ash.
Her barrier was built to repel low-to-mid-tier swarms—it was never designed to absorb the full kinetic impact of an eighteen-meter Siege-type nightmare. If that thing struck the line, the barrier wouldn’t just break; the resulting mana feedback would tear her soul apart.
The eighteen-meter titan snorted, exhaling a plume of scorching, violent steam from its grotesque nostrils. Its stacked quad-eyes burned like molten iron, locked onto the row of giant blue broadswords blocking the passage into the ruined capital.
It scraped its rear claws against the cracked earth like an enraged bull, its throat vibrating with a resonant, bone-chilling roar.
BOOM!
The bedrock shattered beneath its weight as the massive beast launched itself forward, accelerating with unnatural, horrifying speed.
The earth didn’t merely shake—it bucked violently. Each thunderous footfall sent violent shockwaves through the soil, launching dozens of nearby two-meter purple Aberrants centimeters into the air like discarded toys. The titan swept across the plain like a living avalanche, leaving deep, crumbled gouges in the terrain, its entire frame engulfed in a thick, radiating miasma of volatile purple energy.
Evelyn’s pupils dilated to pinpricks as the towering shadow closed the distance. Her breath caught in her throat, her chest heaving as her heart hammered against her ribs like a trapped bird.
Before she could process the threat, Elysia lunged forward, grabbing Evelyn’s wrist with a white-knuckled grip.
"Sister, move!" Elysia yelled, yanking her back with all her strength.
Commander Kael drew his longsword and fell back alongside them, his boots kicking up clouds of hot soot as they sprinted away from the immediate collision zone.
BOOM-CRACK!
An ear-splitting detonation tore through the atmosphere.
The titan ignited its volatile purple aura, slamming its full mass into the defensive line while driving its colossal, scythe-like claws directly into the central etheric blade. The sheer physical impact, combined with the explosive kinetic force, sent a violent shockwave sweeping across the entire capital, leveling whatever stone arches remained standing.
Evelyn’s Skyblade constructs groaned under the strain before shattering completely. The giant blue blades snapped into countless glittering fragments, their structural mana dissolving into the air.
The titan’s momentum plowed deep into the earth, carving a massive crater at the threshold of the broken walls. The atmospheric backshock blasted outward, catching the fleeing group.
"Ugh!"
Evelyn, Elysia, and Kael were launched off their feet by the violent gust of wind and flying debris. Heavy granite fragments rained down around them, crushing several abandoned wagons and pinning a few straggling guards beneath the rubble.
Evelyn hit the earth hard, rolling across the rough gravel before skidding to a halt on her side. Pain shot through her shoulder, but she gritted her teeth, pushing herself up onto her palms.
She turned her head, her gaze rising through the dust cloud.
Her breath froze.
The eighteen-meter behemoth stood merely a dozen yards away, its towering silhouette blotting out the dim red sky. Scorching heat radiated off its purple hide, smelling of burnt ozone and copper.
Her hand trembled involuntarily against the gravel, cold sweat trickling down her temple.
Throughout her entire life as the Princess of the Starlight Kingdom, through every tactical briefing and beast extermination, she had never encountered an Aberrant of this scale. The ancient archives detailed many horrors, but a eighteen-meter Siege-class variant had never been recorded in surviving human history.
’Is this... an evolved strain?’ Evelyn thought, her jaw tight, her mind racing in dark realization. ’Did Velista refine them during their centuries in the shadow realm...?’
The titan exhaled another scalding cloud of vapor, standing tall amidst the ruin, its jagged maw twisting into a grotesque display of sharp fangs.
Evelyn’s knees felt hollow, her limbs heavy. Beneath the massive titan’s feet, the sea of two-meter purple man-eaters poured through the newly cleared breach like a dark, relentless tide. Hundreds of glowing red eyes flooded the inner avenues of the capital, their claws dragging across the stone, eager for flesh.
The behemoth threw back its nightmare skull and let out another deafening, territorial roar that shook the very foundation of the city.
Paralyzed by the sheer scale of the horror, Evelyn remained frozen on the ground.
THUD
A pair of heavy armored boots stepped into her line of sight. Kael dropped to one knee beside her, his left hand grasping her elbow while his right held his unsheathed blade.
"Princess Evelyn, get up! We have to move!" Kael rasped, his voice tight but steady as he helped her to her feet. Elysia rushed to her other side, hoisting her sister’s arm over her shoulder.
"What about the people...?" Evelyn choked out, her voice raspy as she looked back toward the inner districts, where small pockets of fleeing survivors were still trying to reach the southern evacuation route. "There are still guards trapped near the secondary market... We can’t just abandon them..."
"Sister, look at the field!" Elysia pleaded, her eyes wide with frantic urgency. "There are too many! You’ve used up too much mana—you can barely stand! We need to retreat to Lumiria now, regroup, and let your reserves recover!"
Kael turned his head, locking eyes with Evelyn. His expression was devoid of panic, replaced instead by a calm, absolute resolve.
"Princess, leave this line to us," Kael said, offering a firm, deliberate nod. "The Hero Corps and the Royal Guard were founded for this exact moment. We will hold the breach."
Evelyn stared into Kael’s eyes. She saw no hesitation, no fear—only the quiet, unyielding duty of a commander who had already accepted his fate.
She closed her eyes, swallowing the lump of despair in her throat, and nodded. "Don’t die out here, Kael."
"On my honor, Your Highness," Kael replied, giving his chest plate a single, sharp strike with his gauntlet.
Elysia didn’t waste another second. She tightened her grip on Evelyn’s waist and pulled her sister into a fast run, guiding her through the ruined alleyways toward the southern bypass that led directly out of the capital and into the safe zone of Ren’s territory.
Evelyn looked back over her shoulder as she ran.
Through the haze of smoke and ash, she saw Kael standing alone atop a mound of shattered white marble, his azure hero’s cape snapping wildly in the hot wind. He stood directly between the advancing horde of purple man-eaters and the narrow passage leading out of the city.
Tears welled in the corners of her eyes, blurring her vision.
’Please...’ she prayed silently in her heart, her feet pounding against the cracked earth. ’Stay alive... All of you...’
---
(Kael’s Point of View)
The wind howling through the broken ramparts carried the metallic scent of fresh blood and hot iron.
Kael stood at the apex of the rubble pile, his long cape tearing at the hem as the tempest whipped around him. Below, the final civilian transport wagons were clearing the southern gate, disappearing onto the long dirt highway that stretched toward the Lumiria settlement. The evacuation was ninety percent complete. The commoners were safe.
Now, only the rear guard remained.
Kael shifted his grip on his longsword. The weapon’s frost-enchanted steel hummed softly, emitting a pale blue mist that chilled the hot air around his fingers.
Behind him, dozens of footsteps crunched over the loose gravel.
The remaining members of the Hero Corps—mages in singed robes, spearmen with cracked shields, and archers with empty quivers—ascended the rubble mound, falling into formation beside their commander. Their faces were smeared with soot, their bodies battered, but their eyes remained fixed on the tide of monsters flooding the avenue.
Kael turned his head slightly, his gaze sweeping over the men and women standing at his back.
"Heroes of the Starlight Kingdom!" Kael’s voice boomed across the ruins, clear, powerful, and ringing with absolute authority.
The heroes turned to him, their hands tightening around their weapons.
"For centuries, our ancestors hid behind these high white walls!" Kael roared, pointing his frost blade directly at the advancing sea of purple abominations. "We grew comfortable in the shadow of peace while the dark faction waited beyond our borders! But today, the walls are gone! There is no castle left to hide in!"
He stepped down to the middle of the ridge, his eyes burning with a fierce, contagious intensity.
"Look at those foul beasts! They come to devour our homes, our blood, and our legacy! They think humanity is fragile! They think we are weak creatures waiting to be slaughtered in our own ash!"
Kael drew a deep breath, his voice echoing off the burning ruins.
"Today, we teach them otherwise! We do not yield! We do not beg! If this kingdom falls today, then we will make them bleed for every inch of soil we give up! Better to shatter like jade amidst the fire than to die cowering in the dark like livestock!"
The heroes listened, the fear in their chests burning away, replaced by an intoxicating, white-hot fury.
"For the Starlight Kingdom!" an elemental mage screamed, raising his glowing staff into the air.
"For humanity!" a wounded heavy-shielder bellowed, slamming his tower shield against the stone.
"For our homeland!" dozens of voices erupted in unison, a chorus of defiance that drowned out the guttural roars of the approaching horde.
Kael turned back to face the breach, a cold, sharp smile breaking through his soot-stained face.
"Draw your steel!" Kael commanded, raising his blade to the sky. "Show these bastards the strength humanity cultivated while they hid in the dark!"
With a unified roar, the Hero Corps charged down the rubble mound, their elemental mana bursting forth in a dazzling display of fire, frost, and lightning.
From the adjacent thoroughfare, a thunderous clatter of iron hooves shook the ground.
Commander Aether of the Royal Guard rode at the head of a massive cavalry formation. Hundreds of armored knights on heavy warhorses swept through the central avenue, their lances leveled, their silver breastplates gleaming amidst the smoke.
Aether pulled up his horse beside Kael, his face grim, his drawn broadsword dripping with dark purple blood.
"Commander Kael!" Aether yelled over the din. "The main civilian columns have crossed the border into Lumiria! The rear is clear!"
Kael wiped a streak of blood from his cheek, grinning faintly. "Then we have nothing left to protect behind us, Aether."
Aether laughed—a harsh, wild sound—and turned to his cavalry.
"Men of the Royal Guard!" Aether bellowed, raising his sword high. "We may not possess the grand magic of the Hero Corps! We were born without elite elemental traits! But we possess iron wills and the blood of soldiers! Today, we prove that common steel can pierce the dark!"
The cavalry shouted in agreement, their voices roaring in harmony with the foot soldiers.
"Charge!" Aether screamed, spurring his warhorse into a full gallop.
"Charge!"
The combined forces of the Hero Corps and the Royal Guard collided with the forward wave of the Aberrant tide.
CRASH!
Steel met bone. Frost magic erupted across the front line, freezing dozens of two-meter purple beasts in place before Kael swept his longsword through them, shattering their torso cores into glittering ice dust. Beside him, heavy cavalry lances impaled monstrosities through their armored throats, dragging them down under the crushing weight of iron hooves.
Mages unleashed concentrated firebolts directly into the open maws of the beasts, while spearmen formed tight phalanxes, holding the choke point at the ruined gate with unwavering discipline.
Standing in the center of the fray, slicing through another purple abomination, Kael caught sight of the eighteen-meter titan raising its massive claw to crush his line.
He didn’t flinch. He tightened his grip on his frost blade, blood pumping hot through his veins.
"After centuries of hiding..." Kael whispered to himself, his eyes ablaze with wild, unyielding fire as he leaped directly into the path of the giant. "Humanity strikes back."
SRASH!
